2️⃣ LOTR

So far I have clocked 15 hours of reading time. I have finished one book and after today it should be two. Struggling with Dhalgren, it is so not what I was expecting. It is kind of weird for lack of a better term. This maybe another DNF for me.

Here are a few questions on The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis. These are just to get us started. Please feel free to discuss anything about this book. There was a lot going in it and I would love to hear your thoughts. #LitsySciFiBookClub #LSFBC

@Larkken @Deblovestoread @bnp @Johanna414 @BookmarkTavern @julesG @sebrittainclark @BookBelle84 @Readergrrl @CSeydel @Roary47 @LeeRHarry

Ruthiella 1. think at least in part the book is to show how humans can‘t see beyond their own limited understanding and perspective, to our own detriment.
2. Was he an alcoholic? I never thought of him that way, interesting! In any case, I found him relatable in his need for solitude coupled with his need for companionship.
3. I never saw Newton as a Christ figure. Icarus fits in that his ambitions were too high and were ultimately his downfall.
2d
See All 8 Comments
Bookwomble 1. That vested interest will outweigh wisdom. That we don't learn from experience. That technology can't save us if our intentions continue to be domination through force.
2. Tevis was actively alcoholic when he wrote the book, and alcoholism was a feature of many of his stories. I thought it an interesting inversion of culture shock, as historically alcoholism is a factor in the collapse of a colonised culture. Saying that, Newton does lose...
2d
Bookwomble ... himself in American culture, "goes native", and perhaps alcohol is the haven of the alienated alien.
3. There's an early scene in which Newton sees a picture of Christ crucified and sees him as Anthean, so the comparison is there, but I think as a contrast between Christ's arrival being the salvation of the fallen universe and Newton's failure to save anything. The fate of Icarus is the overarching metaphor: the fall of Anthean civilisation...
2d
Bookwomble ... through the misuse of technology, the incipient fall of human civilization, the literal and metaphorical fall of Newton from space to earth, and from grace to purgatory, if not damnation. Rumpelstiltskin span straw into gold, and Newton arrived not just with literal gold, but with the prime materials to create wealth from, essentially, nothing. Photography is the innovation most mentioned: wealth created by the conversion of the real into... 2d
Bookwomble ... an image, and faery gold is traditionally illusory, lacks intrinsic value and eventually reverts to leaves and dust.
(My apologies for hogging bandwidth.)
2d
kwmg40 Good observations here. I don't really have anything to add to the discussion, but the rest of you have given me more to think about. 9h

Happy Tuesday! Here are the #Two4Tuesday questions today. Everyone is welcome to play along!

I am going to answer question #2 first and tell you what prompted these questions. In the tag book, one of the characters states there should have been a "Wife 101" instead of Algebra in high school because he never used Algebra but sure need the other. Funny dialog, but it got me to thinking. Everyone should know how to make a budget, balance a checkbook

TheSpineView Check the oil and tire pressure in a car, sew a button on a shirt, etc. Do they still teach the Dewey Decimal system or how to properly alphabetize files? CatLass007 According to Amazon and ThriftBooks this book won‘t be released until October. Do you have an ARC? 3d
CatLass007 Also, I wasn‘t tagged when the voting was posted. 3d
kwmg40 I'm afraid I'll have to sit this one out. I can't find any copies in my local libraries or bookstores, and while Amazon and Kobo offer e-books, they won't be available until October! This may be a problem just in Canada, though. 3d

TheSpineView @CatLass007 My bad. Sorry, you are on my list and I some how over looked you. Squirrel brain!!🤦‍♀️ 3d
TheSpineView @CatLass007 GoodReads said it was published on April 5, 2022???? Yet I see it is pre-order only on Amazon and the release date is October 1st. Wow, I took what GoodReads said as correct and didn't check Amazon. @rretzler @PaperbackPirate @kwmg40. We will have to put this one until a later date. That will mean we will read The Calculing Stars unless you guys want to recast votes. Let me know. 3d
CatLass007 The description on Litsy says it‘s being released in September. So who knows how any information is accurate? Nobody‘s fault. I read the blurb and it sounds entertaining because cat. I think The Calculating Stars sounds like a great idea! 3d
TheSpineView @CatLass007 I was looking forward to this one. Kind of bummed that we have to wait until October. 3d

julesG It was self-published in April 2022, when I bought it. So I guess a publishing house snatched it up and is re-releasing it. Honestly didn't know about this when I nominated the book. MEA CULPA 3d
kwmg40 No problem, and I'm fine with The Calculating Stars. I've read it already and am not sure I'll reread but I'd be happy to participate in discussions with everyone else. 3d
RamsFan1963 I'm fine with switching to The Calculating Stars. I'm not sure if my library has a copy, but I've seen several copies for under $10 on ebay. 3d

Calling all UK Littens!!! 🇬🇧 I need some help/advice please. My grandson, pictured above, loves football. Has played since he was very young. He has been contacted by Buckswood Academy and offered a place at the academy to study and play football for his junior and senior year of high school (he will be 16 next month). Living in the US, I know nothing about Buckswood. Does anyone know of them or make a recommendation. A reference I and...

TheSpineView His parents could reach out to would be awesome. Any advice on what to expect? We feel this is an awesome opportunity for him but want to make sure we are making the tight decision. @Andrew65 @Cupcake12 @Sleepswithbooks 4d
kspenmoll Just wow! 4d
See All 17 Comments
Sleepswithbooks @TheSpineView - That‘s awesome!! I‘ve never heard of the school and know NOTHING about his sport. I am a super big help 🙁 4d
TrishB All of the big football clubs in the UK have their own football academies- I hadn‘t realised there were independent schools offering this. I would like very closely whether any students have progressed into football teams if that is his future aim. (16 is very late for football academies in the U.K.) 4d
TrishB Look at the inspection reports on their website. The school has gone from inadequate to meeting standards in 6 years. I would definitely be looking into why. New structure/funding/management. The inadequate report and quick turn around would raise concerns for me. 4d
TrishB Sorry - don‘t mean to sound negative but I‘m Director of Academic Quality in a university and this is part of my job! These are the questions I would ask. 4d
TheSpineView @TrishB Don't apologize. We want the facts good and bad. While my grandson is a very good player, not an elite player, it is not his goal to play professionally. He wants to play football at university but nothing beyond that. We are hoping the experience of studying aboard will benefit him in life. Thanks for the info. 4d
rretzler Both of my sons were club soccer players from age 8 through HS. My younger son played on our state‘s ODP (Olympic Development Program). We found that there are many overseas soccer schools that are offering the same thing, and our impression is that most are just trying to make money. I can‘t speak for the school that you mention. Neither of my sons went on to play college soccer - my younger was definitely good enough, but my husband played… 4d
TrishB I think from that perspective it looks absolutely fine. I wouldn‘t want him going in with the expectation that he will get a place at a club. And studying abroad for any young people is a major plus for confidence, totally agree. 4d
rretzler …all four years eons ago. My best advice if he wants to play college is to get him on the best club soccer team you can, if he is not already. You might want to look into ODP, but tryouts for it start in the fall. Club tryouts are usually in the spring. If you live near an MLS team, they usually have academies, as well as club teams. Contacting your states youth soccer program could help answer questions, I‘m sure. 4d
TheSpineView @rretzler He is already a starter on the top soccer team in SC. He has also benefited from professional instruction that my son has paid for. His goal is to get in a small or midsized university and be able to play the game he loves while getting his degree. 4d
TheSpineView @TrishB We are well aware that even in the US it would be extremely unlikely that he would ever play beyond university. He truly loves the sport. I see him playing as an adult for recreation and maybe coaching young kids later in life. We are fortunate that he has very strong academics so he can go to most any school here even if he doesn't play. 4d
The_Book_Ninja @TheSpineView @TrishB is correct to look at their credentials as a school. You don‘t want him going to one that is poor. A lot of lower league/semi-pro clubs have arrangements with local colleges for example, Enfield Town and Barnet College. In these programs, The college gives them the qual and the club does the training &, in theory, they cherry pick the football talent. However, unless the kid is exceptional, they may not see 1st team action… (edited) 4d
The_Book_Ninja @TheSpineView ..It looks like this program has no club affiliation and if their educational credentials are not that good either, then I‘d avoid them. My son went to a dedicated soccer college that primed him for application to US colleges (his dream) They were affiliated with a local semi-pro team and also played in an inter-college league. At the end of his qualification they set up showcase matches where visiting US reps could scout players (edited) 4d
The_Book_Ninja @TheSpineView Final note. Trish is also correct that all top professional clubs have academies. However, the use of “academy” is often freely used by clubs, schools & colleges & has a vague or no guaranteed meaning relating to quality of education & can be intentionally misleading. A pro club academy will offer a good player a scholarship which is usually a pretty poor education but the football is elite and a pro contract is the (rare) goal. (edited) 4d
Mrs_B You might want to look at the ESFA website to see how the academy have performed in recent school competitions. It's not a school I had heard of before, and I work in a school with a LOT of sport going on! I think Trish has given you some good advice there. 4d

The horse show I have been preparing for is Saturday. Lots of stuff to do. Spicy needs a good cleaning and I need to clean my tack. At least my tack trunk is all ready to go and my show clothes are clean and laid out in the spare bedroom.

What's new with you? @Texreader @Gissy @Blueberry @PageShifter @Cupcake12 @BookmarkTavern @Klou

LiseWorks Good Luck with the show, show us those ribbons 🎀 1w
mcctrish Good luck with your shows. A teacher just asked me to cover for her when she has her horse shows, I‘m excited for her 1w

#WondrousWednesday @Eggs

🌞 Christmas 🎄
🌞 My hubby.
🌞 I'm an only child and my parents were older and they both worked. We didn't do much together as a family. I had a few cousins my age and I remember going to the Outer Banks in the summer with them. That was fun.
