The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: A Novel | Haruki Murakami

I've been reading a book for a while now, and despite trying multiple times, I just can't seem to finish it. The story is intriguing, but Murakami's stream of consciousness writing style—thoughts within thoughts—makes it difficult to follow. Sometimes, I lose track of the main story, and it becomes hard to stay engaged. As a result, I've lost interest, but I don't want to make a final verduct until I've completed it.

Welcome to the (multiple) weekEND experience!
I'm introducing it that way as I need to frame this as both a book I ended up spending quite a lot of time with and an experience more than a narrative.
If I weight this against my regular patience levels a la Cloud Atlas, me liking this even a little bit doesn't make sense. And yet.
Basically once I managed to survive the first 200 pages of YIKES and okaaaaayy.... 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I was on board for when it really started to get - I feel like I need a more ethereal word than weird. Surreal?
Pretend you\'re a guy that has a sexual appreciation for women, an eye for fine tailoring and no real ambition in life, and once you found out your wife was missing, suspected your brother-in-law had something to do with it, so you decided to drop a whole lot of acid to find the answer and had a BAD trip. Is that the actual plot? 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 3/? Not quite, but it\'s what the book FEELS like.
I can see the parallels primarily between Creta Kano\'s described experiences and Kumiko\'s alluded to and eventually mostly related experiences. The sense of some kind of tainting by Noburu Wataya, the discussion of a disturbing experience related to reproduction/abortion/childbirth, the sense that they would have lived a better life if their older sisters were present for more of their childhood. 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 4/? Familial loss and familial apathy. Other physical descriptions lead me to believe that every woman or female, even the underage ones, is an allusion to Kumiko, the protagonist\\\'s wife (which raises the question of Malta and Creta\\\'s actual existence as more than just a subconscious aid/parallel).
Similarly, any of the many side tangents that are more or a lot less related to the main narrative have parallels in Kumiko or Okada\\\'s experience. (edited) 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 5/? Especially trauma leading to forms of numbness alternating with pain. The mark, the bat, borne or wielded more than once: darker, aggressive power required in order to defeat a greater evil. If one infers a parallel dream world to the real world, than these are echoes and/or the way things manifest when the protagonist drifts into the parallel world.
Okada seeing all women as his wife to a greater or lesser degree, may be part 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 6/? of an obsession borne out of her continued unresolved absence but, it all feels a little distant because the reader isn\'t ever provided with a strong sense of this husband and wife\'s close relationship. You get some difficult and awkward moments and some banal ones, but in contrast to something like The Raw Shark Texts, where even in flashes I felt how strongly the main character missed the woman in his life 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 7/? (which I can no longer remember if she was his wife or girlfriend), while Okada does say he misses her and loves her, things are so surreal that I don\'t get the sense of their strong ties, his need to find her propels the plot, but as coolly as their relationship is covered, they could have been roommates, it doesn\'t work as well to maintain the tension for the reader.
I wasn\'t invested in Okada finding Kumiko so much as I was invested 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 8/? in the strange journey he eventually embarked on and solving the mysteries - which one could easily argue the subsequent explanations were a little thin on the ground.
While I do appreciate the snippet of agency provided to Kumiko in her role in her brother\'s demise, and the bit of hope provided for May Kasahara building a rewarding life herself in the end, I feel like the biggest warning this book needs slapped on it (and the list of 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 9/? content warnings is EXTENSIVE) is misogyny. That 90s casual sexualization of all women as the primary way for a man to interact/evaluate her. The heavy emphasis on virginity/purity contrasted with defilement, seeming self-defilement by promiscuity or defilement by men via sexual assault.
Yes, Murakami often skirts the line by insisting the defilement is mental, and I wouldn\'t want to presume to put words in the mouth of a survivor of 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 10/? of psychological abuse, (in this case a mystical form?) but there\'s some very loaded langauge being used and I think a modern publication would phrase it differently.
Oh, and then there\'s two different women who are basically described as frigid until one specific man makes them feel desire/sexual pleasure almost against their will. I don\'t want to kink shame anybody\'s consensual roleplay, but that narrative has some powerfully negative 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 11/? associations along the lines of \'you only haven\'t liked it before because of blah blah, I\'ll make you like it.\' Major yikes. 🫣😬

Despite the bad and because of the intriguing:
Will I read another Murakami? Yes. Because if I survived this without undue psychic damage, and was regularly amused by how he chose to word things in such an unusual and detailed manner, aka, if I actually like his writing style, then chances are I\'ll like his other 5mo

Robotswithpersonality 12/? books regardless of the subject matter as I did with Strange Library. I\'m just along for the ride!
Can I recommend them? Hey, if you read all that and still want to try it: \'ye have been warned,\'have at it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Parts of this book I couldn‘t put down but other parts were so boring I wanted to give it up. I‘m not satisfied with the ending, I‘m not satisfied with the weird hotel/well drama, I don‘t know. I feel like this book could have been great.

In english: “the Wind up bird chronicle”. I think I‘ve been reading this book for almost two years on and off. Every time coming back, it picks up like I had never left. Murakami took four years to write this novel and while the main character is searching for his lost cat and wife, you can almost feel the writer searching for a way to tell his story and find a way to conclude it. And with part 3 he did so brilliantly.

I have no idea what I read, but it kept me entertained and I finished so I‘ll give it a pick.

One day the cat disappears, and Okada‘s wife get in contact with someone to get the cat back. So begins this novel, that takes the reader on a ride/ adventure.

In between all the craziness, I did actually learn something about WWII from Japan‘s viewpoint.

Kenyazero I think it‘s pretty cool that largely because the WWII stuff (I don‘t remember if this comes up in the text) doesn‘t usually get talked about in Japanese history classes, Murakami included it in this book (like many similarly stark topics in the US and other places). At least, that‘s what our professor explained (she was one of the Japanese professors, and taught the Japanese literature and culture course as well). 3y

I‘ve become quite a fan of Murakami, but this one misses the mark for me. It‘s rather confusing, and I think it could be significantly shorter. I just finished reading it s few minutes ago, so as I continue to mull it over I may need to amend my evaluation.

Day 3 of #20in4 is coming to an end for me - it‘s really time for bed😢 I‘m 14 hours in the readathon and 600 pages into this Reread. I am looonging to finish the book - but 400 more pages is a bit too much for a late sunday night😅😅 I‘m looking foward to tomorrow‘s lunchbreak though 😅

After finishing an amazing book last night I usually would fall in a small slump- luckily I can start a newly published version of one of my favourite Murakamis❤️ I think I last read it about 7 years ago- so it‘s about time for a reread! Also the last version was translated from english- while this one has been translated directly from japanese! すばらしい❤️
I can‘t wait to dive into Murakami‘s wonderful world again! 1004 pages of happiness for me😍

Finally got my new version of one of my favourite Murakami books! First time it has been translated directly from japanese - the older versions are all translated from english. It‘s a 1000 pages and I‘m excited😍🤩

So many friends adore Murakami and have read so many books by him... but they are just ok to me. I enjoyed Kafka.. but this book.. ugh. I like the idea of multiple story lines coming together as something whole at the end, but there were so so so many characters and story lines that it seemed overdone. And all the monologues!!! Like I just didn‘t care enough. There were some redeeming parts and characters (May) but this book was just ok to me!

I bought the tagged book after Patti Smith raved about it in M Train. This is my first time reading Murakami and I actually think I‘m enjoying the dream-like rhythm... feels appropriate for my current state of reality.

This was a weird book. I listened to it on audio and I feel like the only reason I made it through the book was because it was on audio, and yet I can‘t help but wonder if I‘d read the physical book I would‘ve followed all the randomness better? Probably not. For the most part I enjoyed this rambling tale of a man and his interactions with others, but I feel so lost. This may be a book that I‘ll have to try reading again later. #AuthorAMonth

Reading Murakami books would always leave me with more questions than answers. In a good way though because it allows me to think and come up with answers of my own. The story, same as other Murakami novels, is very easy to read but such a complicated mix of the real and surreal world. It took me a while to finish the book but it's worth the time.

Reading goal 2020: Read all Murakami books!
Haruki Murakami is my favourite author and i have read Kafka on the shore(the best!!), Hard Boiled Wonderland and The End of the World, Desire, Men Without Women, South Of the Border West of the Sun, Norwegian Wood by him. And reading the rest is my top priority this year.
I also wish to do the popsugar challenge 2020 but I'm not too worried if i dont complete it because I'm also busy with college.

I read this one for a Japanese culture class. It was a very fun, often whimsical read, and our professor used it as an example of history that gets left out of Japan's textbooks (every country seems to have these types of omissions). I really enjoyed the symbolism, and the translator's style. I wish the wife had been allowed to be more of a character. #whimsical #spirit #spiritworld #magic?
