Into the Darkest Corner
Into the Darkest Corner | Elizabeth Haynes
Check the locks on your doors and windows and surrender to this obsessive thriller. Karin Slaughter When young, pretty Catherine Bailey meets Lee Brightman, she cant believe her luck. Gorgeous, charismatic and a bit mysterious, Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. But what begins as flattering attention and spontaneous, passionate sex transforms into raging jealousy, and Catherine soon discovers that Lees dashing good looks hide a dark, violent nature. Four years later, Lee is behind bars and Catherinenow Cathyis trying to build a new life for herself. Trusting no one, she compulsively checks every lock of her apartment and varies her route home each day. Then an attractive new neighbour moves in. Encouraging her to confront her fears, he sparks unexpected hope and the possibility of a normal life. Until the day the phone rings. Winner of Amazon UKs Book of the Year Award and shortlisted for the Waverton Good Read Award and the Peoples Book Prize, the mesmerizing, skillfully drawn and vividly cinematic Into the Darkest Corner is an ingeniously structured tour de force of suspense that marks the arrival of a major new talent.

I definitely enjoyed this book. It was similar in some ways to Behind Closed Doors. I thought it moved quickly and was very interesting from start to finish. It did get a little complicated/ hard to follow in parts with the time jump, but overall I really liked this one.

Overall, this was a decent thriller, without the “shocking twist” you see so many have these days. I kept waiting for one and was pleasantly surprised that the characters I liked did in fact turn out to be decent people throughout the story. An interesting spin on the domestic thriller trope, with an unreliable narrator but only because she‘s been so traumatized. Some extra gratuitous violence unnecessary to the story; but overall 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Although I had no trouble flying through the pages, it did feel a bit hackneyed. Party girl Cathy meets gorgeous and mysterious Lee who turns out to be a sadistic psycho. We see their relationship unfold and also spend time with Cathy three years later. She‘s suffering from PTSD and OCD, but luckily handsome doctor Stuart moves into the flat upstairs. You can see where it‘s all going from mile away, but I still kept reading.

EvieBee Reminded me of, but the latter was definitely better written. 6y
TheLudicReader The Book of You is also a great book in this genre, @EvieBee 6y

I typically only read 1 book a month unless it‘s a series and I read 5! I know that‘s nowhere near as many as most of you but I am super proud of myself 😂 hoping to read 6 for the month of February, maybe more - but 6 is a good start.

I had 100 pages left in this book and there was no way I could leave it behind until I got back from my vacation.

One of, if not the best psychological thrillers I‘ve read all year. There‘s really no mystery (we know from the start who the bad guy is), but this tale of Catherine/Cathy during her relationship with Lee and 4 years later, really gets in your head.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

morgan_krahn @MicheleinPhilly I did 😩 apparently we are teaching our little guy to share at an early age....he started with a cold and now my husband and I are both sick 😷 6y
TheKidUpstairs @morgan_krahn little ones are germ factories. I was at my doctor's yesterday, and she diagnosed me with "child in Kindergarten syndrome" - earache is the result of a lingering sinus bug caught from son #2 (who got it from son #1), cough from either the sinus bug or a result of being around son #1's croup, sore throat either a result of the above or it might be strep caught from son #1's best friend. Ugh. 6y
GypsyKat Oh no! Feel better! Btw, peanut-butter and honey are one of my favorite combinations! 6y
BethM Emergenc and essential oils have been helping me. Oddly enough though what really kicked it was gargling warm salt water. 6y
morgan_krahn @BethM warm salt water is what my mom suggested as well! When I told her I can‘t gargle without gagging she replied “suck it up and try” 😂 6y

Great thriller, a page turner. The extra point is that we can almost understand how a person with OCD feels. Really enjoy it. "Before I Go to Sleep meets Sleeping with the Enemy in this sexy and suspenseful psychological debut thriller that is absolutely unputdownable—exploring romantic obsession, the darker side of female friendships, and the line between love and violence"—Entertaining level: ?????#Sha2017

My Darcy was a reader. She also needed a Xanax while reading Into the Darkest Corner. We agreed it still remains one of the best psychological thrillers we've read.

It's been less than 48 hours and I miss her so much. She was my reading buddy, my constant cuddler. Anytime I was in a chair (or hammock) reading, she was next to me.

I listened to this as an audiobook and it was wonderful! Going back and forth between 2003/2004 when our main character, Cathy, is in a relationship with a man named Lee and 2007/2008 when something horrible has clearly happened and Cathy is now riddled with OCD. Hearing what happened between these two points in time was both devastating and exhilarating. Definitely plan to read/listen to more by this author! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Dark and disturbing thriller centred around an abusive relationship and its aftermath. The chapters flash back and forward to the time of the affair and afterwards which takes a few chapters to get into and it could have done with being a touch shorter but all in all a gripping read.

This is an odd thing. The author is British, it's set in England yet the narrator uses words like "pants" for "trousers", "sneakers" and "cotton candy". Didn't the publisher trust American readers to understand the original British words?

Aseleener I have noticed that in other books, but the other way around. 7y

Don't get me wrong, I have a soft spot for crime thrillers but, man, does this get more and more implausible as it goes along. It's decent at first and a mess by the time it ends.

Characters are poorly developed, especially our domestic abuser baddie who is a bouncer? Cop? Who cares? They just felt unrealistic at all times.

This seems to be as well loved as "Girl on the Train" (which I also think is overrated and disliked) and I am not sure why.
