How big is a crocodile? What about a tiger, or the worlds largest spider? Can you imagine a tongue that is two feet long or an eye thats bigger than your head? Sometimes facts and figures dont tell the whole story. Sometimes you need to see things for yourselfat their actual size.

Wonderfully illustrated animal book, details the actual size of different animals, unusually small & in contrast very large animals. It also contains specific details on animals that are featured & portrayed in the book. Excellent resource for introducing science & math. Sometimes facts & figures don't tell the whole story, you need to see things for yourself- at actual size.

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a NF book. Actual Size was awarded the Orbis Pictus Award. How big to you think your hand is compared to that of a brown bear? Actual Size can answer these fun questions for you! This book displays the actual size of animals and their body parts. Add this book to your library and see the excitement in students! They will love comparing themselves to the actual size depictions of the different animals #ucflae3414su20

JessicaO This book is great for a RA. Students will be be completely engaged in the pictures on the pages! The lesson I have linked work perfectly because it has students measure themselves on the page and guess what they think the size is! UDL principle 1.3 to offer alternatives for visual information and ESOL strategy #4 to link the lesson to students prior knowledge! Both of these work great for this lesson plan. 4y
DrSpalding You have been citing helpful resources however remember to consult the author and publisher first! Often times they have some of the very best resources to implement their books in your classroom. This is an excellent book to integrate into your math curriculum. 4y

Orbis Pictus award winning NF book by Steve Jenkins, Actual Size is a picture book that contains the ACTUAL SIZE of a variety of different animals both big and small. This book also contains actual measurements of the animal or part of the animal. This book is super engaging for students with it fun pictures, yet super informative about math and science concepts. I think a RA would be the best way to showcase this awesome book. #ucflae3414su20

Emmaturtle3 This link: http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/readers_guides/pdfs/JenkinsGuide.pdf provides great resources about all Steve Jenkins books include Actual Size. The activity has students seeing what animals are smaller than their hand and it has students reflecting back to the text. 4y
Emmaturtle3 UDL 2.3 can be used by explaining the mathematical concepts in the text as well as making sure to decode the text. I could use ESOL Strategy #4, which is linking the lesson to prior knowledge, by asking the students questions about animals and their understanding of their sizes 4y

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a non-fiction (NF) book which was named one of the Orbis Pictus honor books in 2005. This book discusses the actual size of animals and allows the reader to find out how they measure up to these animals.

This book could be used as a shared reading activity (SR) as this is a big book that teachers and students could read together. In doing so, the teacher can model some good reading strategies so...

Nkaufmann the students are able to see a good example of a fluent, expressive, reader. Moreover, this book connects back to math as it talks about different measurements.

The UDL principle 5.3 regarding building fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance and the EL principle 8 regarding using direction instruction: Modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the strategy and show how to use it, can be met by this picture book.
4y
Nkaufmann Teachers are helping their students to become fluent readers by supporting them when they read and also by modeling what a fluent reader sounds like.

This readers guide provides a great use of math and science by having students draw real measurements of animals they know and love! This lesson includes a read aloud before having the students draw their favorite animal and discuss it as a class together!
4y
bsiqueira The UDL strategy that would go great for this lesson would be 8.2 “cary demands and resources to optimize challenges” followed by the ESOL strategy #4 “link lesson topic to students prior knowledge” by having them draw a measurement of what they believe the animal they are drawing is! 4y
Mazzole18 I love this book because it ties in so many subjects all in one! I think the idea for the lesson is great because you are taking a subject like math that isn't as favored with most kids and using more appealing thing like animals to draw them in and keep their attention! Especially letting them use their favorite animals for their measurements. 4y

JessicaO This book will be a great addition to my future classroom library! Students will really respond in a good way, just as you mentioned, because they will be fully engaged in seeing the actual size of animals they already know. Actual Size
Written and illustrated by Steve Jenkins
Genre: NonFiction NF
Awards: BCCB Blue Ribbon Book
Have you ever been nose to nose with a Siberian Tiger? Or ever looked into the eye of a giant squid? Through the amazing and clear images of Actual Size, you will get to do just that. Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a children‘s nonfiction picture book that shows you exactly how you size up to some of the world's largest and smallest creatures.

LauraLeighn This beautiful book includes information and life-size images of 19 different animals from all across the world. Students can directly compare their hands with the mighty gorilla, eyes with the smallest goby, and look directly at “the Saltwater Crocodile, the world's largest reptile”(pg13) and see how 3 of our heads can fit in his mouth!
This book is a must-have for any elementary classroom and is perfect for Read Alouds (RA).
4y
LauraLeighn The book has large images that are easy to see and interact with, and students will be quick to want to compare themselves to the many large and small animals included. This book is also great for ESOL adaption, one method would be (ESOL ST.40) Have students prepare individual card files of subject area-specific vocabulary with the names and small drawings of the 19 different animals in the book. The names of the animals are bolded in the text so 4y
LauraLeighn by providing the students with Card files they can practice word and image association. UDL Strategy 3.3 : Guide information processing and visualization can be easily implemented as students are already trying to process the size of the animals they are seeing, so by having them compare their hands to the images we can emphasize the scale at which these animals are. 4y
See All 6 Comments
LauraLeighn Website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZczJfkYwMQ is an Animal Size Comparison video that includes many of the animals from the book that students can point out and compare the sizes of. The video was published by verified user Regarw Comparisons with information being cross-referenced with Britannica, BBC, National Geo Wild, The Animal Facts & Animal Files and is a great addition to the lesson. #ucflae3414SU20 4y

This NF this a fun picture book to share with the class in a RA. The fun facts about animals and how big or small they are will build the interest of young readers. This would be great following up learning about animals after a science lesson on animals. YesseniaN UDL principle: Promote understanding across languages (2.4)

This NF book is an excellent book for any classroom. The theme of this book is showing the actual size of animals. The book goes through different animals big and small, showing the actual size of them on whole or in part. This book would be an awesome RA. Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a great classroom read. It is a NF with beautiful paper collage illustrations and the actual sized body parts of 18 animals. I would definitely do a RA while asking students to make gestures and participate. I would use UDL startegy 2.3 support the coding of text, mathematical notation, and symbols.
