Interesting second memoir from Burroughs. I read running with scissors years ago, but don‘t remember it very well. This one was a good. His style is easy to read and it is interesting. It chronicles his ups and downs in his recovery from alcohol and drugs. I ordered three more of his more recent books.

Burroughs can definitely write and narrate a compelling memoir.

It‘s similar in structure to other sobriety memoirs I‘ve read. You lose track of something while you‘re drinking, then you quit, then there‘s a crisis, then you relapse, then you find or lose something, then you really get sober.

I don‘t why this structure is so common in books, both fictional and non. It wasn‘t my journey, but maybe I‘m weird. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Good book, though!

Burroughs is a good writer. I find him smart and compelling. What I‘m not sure of is how much of what he says is true. It‘s hard to believe he remembers so many details from so many conversations during times when he was inebriated. I can‘t help but think of the James Frey controversy. Still, this book was hard to put down and I‘d have liked it whether marketed as a memoir or not.

Going to start this. Plus, on the back cover, Entertainment Weekly named him one of the fifteen most funniest people in America. So here's to many LOL moments.

DAY 29: Often memoirs shine #theharshestlight on oneself. This memoir of getting sober is one of my favorites. I know Burroughs is a polarizing author, but I love him. He ignited my love for the genre back when I first became a reader.

This, and similar books, resonate because of my dad‘s alcoholism. He‘s 14 or 15 years sober now and I‘m so proud of him. 🧡

I picked up this book when I was searching to understand addiction. Dry provided insight and perceptive of the journey.

After reading the first of his books that I was introduced to (Running with Scissors), I was hooked. The way he expresses himself and comes up with witty antidotes for situations that otherwise would make a reader feel awkward; as though you're intruding on a moment that isn't yours to be a part of...he takes that worry away. Full of humor and honesty. I recommend it to everyone!

Just got a nice surprise that the book I ordered delivered about a week early!! Although it's an older book, it's new in for me!!

This was an audio #reread of a book I read in print in 2008. This has long been one of my favorite memoirs and will remain so.

Augusten is a decent narrator except, when speaking as Foster, he sounds more like Forrest Gump than just a guy with a southern accent. Being from the south myself, that threw me off a little. ??

That sure sucked, but at least I got in an hour of quality #audio time with Augusten Burroughs talking about getting sober and his struggle with codependence. #reread

I normally find addiction memoirs really dull, but Augusten Burroughs doesn't know how to be boring. Alcohol is his biggest weakness, but there's #cocaine in this book, too. #rockinmay

A scary look st the rationalization of substance abuse by the author of Running with Scissors. His honest and matter of fact tone makes his shallow commentary likable. The ending was kinda abrupt, but that's alcoholism for you.

"I'm lonely. And I'm lonely in some horribly deep way and for a flash of an instant, I can see just how lonely, and how deep this feeling runs. And it scares the shit out of me to be this lonely because it seems catastrophic."

I don't have a lot of #creepycovers, but I think there's something creepy about this one...

I take all drinking memoirs with a grain of salt (who can really remember all that much from a given bender?) but at it's core, it's a funny, moving, and occasionally heartbreaking account of love and loss. Speaks to the inner Void, for sure

Augusten Burroughs continues his life story in this second memoir. Augusten is an alcoholic. A severe alcoholic. When it starts to affect his job, he is sent to rehab where he learns about himself and his illness. His struggles about returning home are sad, hilarious and downright beautiful.

My favorite Augusten Burroughs book. As the daughter of a recovering alcoholic, it really resonated.

Burroughs may make me laugh and cry more than any author. I think this one may be my favorite.
