The Hideaway
The Hideaway | Lauren Denton
When her grandmother's will wrenches Sara back home from New Orleans, she learns more about Margaret Van Buren in the wake of her death than she ever did in life. After her last remaining family member dies, Sara Jenkins goes home to The Hideaway, her grandmother Mags's ramshackle B&B in Sweet Bay, Alabama. She intends to quickly tie up loose ends then return to her busy life and thriving antique shop in New Orleans. Instead, she learns Mags has willed her The Hideaway and charged her with renovating it--no small task considering Mags's best friends, a motley crew of senior citizens, still live there. Rather than hurrying back to New Orleans, Sara stays in Sweet Bay and begins the biggest house-rehabbing project of her career. Amid Sheetrock dust, old memories, and a charming contractor, she discovers that slipping back into life at The Hideaway is easier than she expected. Then she discovers a box Mags left in the attic with clues to a life Sara never imagined for her grandmother. With help from Mags's friends, Sara begins to piece together the mysterious life of bravery, passion, and choices that changed Mags's destiny in both marvelous and devastating ways. When an opportunistic land developer threatens to seize The Hideaway, Sara is forced to make a choice--stay in Sweet Bay and fight for the house and the people she's grown to love or leave again and return to her successful but solitary life in New Orleans.

As I mentioned before, this is not a must read or mind blowing, but it was an enjoyable read that kept me engaged. I do like Lauren Denton‘s books.

This book is enjoyable, but isn‘t blowing me away or anything. However I WAS pretty excited for the Eddie Vedder reference. 😁😁

This book & the author‘s other 2 books always make my favorite covers lists. I want to sit on the porch & read with the West Indies Crab Salad I made for my recipe/review pairing. 😋

Listened to this book over the weekend. Really enjoyed this story about a woman who inherits her grandmother's house and unravels the story of her grandmother's life.

Two endearing heroines make their mark on a dilapidated bed and breakfast just outside a quaint coastal Alabama town. The hideaway brings refuge, comfort, great love, and regretful loss. You will have a hard time deciding which woman you like best-I didn't choose, I liked them both🙂

This is my real-life book club‘s April pick- I was the only one who didn‘t vote for it and while I didn‘t hate it, I‘m very curious to see what the rest of my group thought! This was a quick listen, but a very simple and completely predictable plot. I got some #AudioColoring done with it, but never once did I greatly desire to keep listening... just not for me I guess!

#ReadingResolutions #chairs 💙I've used these books before for a prompt on beautiful covers as I find them so peaceful and I love the colors. I also like the use of chairs--they make me want to be there, sitting in them. I read the tagged book for review last year and I will be starting Hurricane Season soon for an April blog book tour.

SandyW The chairs in Hurricane Season don't look all that comfy. The rockets on the other hand... Aaah. 😀 2y
DebinHawaii @SandyW True, but I like to think I am about to be served a delicious meal sitting at the table in Hurricane Season which would make up for a less comfy chair! 😆👍 2y

Finished this last night. I liked it. I feel like it could have been a little more emotional. I never really felt the big connection with the love interest so that could have been done a little better I think but overall it was an enjoyable read.

Day 28 #SeasonsReadings2017 #FaveCoversof2017 There were so many books with gorgeous covers in 2017, I had to limit myself--but these six were among my favorites. Give me blues, greens, and soft grays and all of the pretty hues in between and I'm happy. Also I think these covers captured the stories inside very well. 💙💚📚I reviewed and enjoyed all of these books this year.

Soubhiville 😍 wow, so pretty! 2y
DebinHawaii @Soubhiville Aren't they though?! I do like more ornate covers but the simpler, pretty ones tend to be my favorites.💙 (edited) 2y

This book left me wanting to visit New Orleans and Alabama's Gulf Coast. But I feel like I was expecting more. Maybe I have been reading too many mysteries and thrillers but I kept waiting for something big/bad to happen And I felt disappointed when that didn't happen. It is a very sweet book. Maybe just not for me.

4⭐️ THE HIDEAWAY is creatively told from the two interwoven perspectives of Mag‘s and Sara. The writing is smooth and easy and you'll be turning pages incredible fast. Loved the plot and all the characters. A great book for a breezy afternoon with a tall glass of sweet tea. See full review.

A sweet, easy read about love lost and love found. Sarah learns that her grandmother(Mags) has died and she wishes she would have known more about Mags, which would have explained why she led an eccentric life. Sarah unravels a hidden love that her grandmother had never spoken of. Sarah realizes how much respect she has for her grandmother after learning about her past. And she also learns more about her life in the process.

Sweet Southern debut novel told from the POVs of Sara & her grandmother 'Mags.' Sara leaves her life in NOLA to renovate the B&B in Sweet Bay, AL that Mags leaves her & as the renovations happen (w/help from an attractive contractor) she discovers Mags's secrets as well as herself. A tad predictable but no less charming for it & a great beach or lanai read with its vivid descriptions. With West Indies (Crab) Salad for my book tour review-link👇🏼

DebinHawaii Link to review & (the slightly odd but delicious) Alabama Gulf Coast classic: West Indies Salad here: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2017/05/the-book-tour-stops-here-review-of.ht... 3y
batsy Can't stop staring at the salad! Thanks for the recipe, it sounds so simple and delicious. 3y

DebinHawaii @batsy I hope you enjoy it. It is really good--I was surprised by how much I liked it! 😋🍴 @Jinjer I don't suppose you have a Costco anywhere near you? I buy the lump crabmeat in the refrigerated section there and it's pretty good. It's hard to get good fresh lump crab here without selling a kidney otherwise.🤑💰😬 3y
Jess_Read_This Thanks for sharing the recipe! It looks amazing! 3y

Kimzey I can testify that West Indies Salad is a favorite in Alabama! Glad to know about the book. 🦀 2y

#LyricalApril #ComingHome So far I'm only a handful of chapters into this current #ARC I'm reviewing next week, but with the MC leaving New Orleans & heading home to Alabama to renovate the B&B her grandmother left her, it seems to fit today's musical prompt pretty well. Have I ever mentioned my favorite color? 😆 I love how striking & pretty the cover is & how it looks with other blue things for an afternoon tea break. 💙💙💙 📚🍵🍫

Cinfhen I agree book cover is wonderful as is this photo and book choice 💙💙💙 3y

Much as I want to do a #readathon this weekend, I have work projects to finish & things I need to do before I go to Portland on the 9th & just can't commit. I still have a weekend #TBR stack & will work in some reading time. I don't expect to get through all of these but I'll finish The Hideaway for a review next week & I'm trying to catch up with #lesmislovescompany & keep up with #hpchapteraday. The others have later dates or lower priority.😬📚

BarbaraJean This is a very nicely color-coordinated stack--so pretty! 3y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraJean Thank you! I really didn't think about the colors until I had them all stacked together for the photo but it worked out well that my two review books, library book and HP & the Order of the Phoenix are all in shades of blue & Les Mis has blue trim. 😆💙 3y
Booknerd4 I'm curious what you think of the top 3 books? 3y
MyNamesParadise Nice stack! 3y
DebinHawaii @Booknerd4 Stay tuned--those are still mostly #TBR & I've only just started The Hideway so far. 📚😀 @MyNamesParadise Thank you! 📚👍 3y

First, I'm a sucker for dual-time-line stories, and toss a family secret in there? I'm in. Denton's debut features Mags and Sara. Both women, besides being related, are tied to the Hideaway-- a B&B in a little town called Sweet Bay.

Things I loved about this book: the descriptions, the swoony parts, and the food (oh man, this book made me so hungry).

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.

Zelma Sounds very interesting! 👍 3y

Day 21 #MarchintoReading #spinepoetry Here's my attempt at some spine poetry from my bookshelves.
💜 The Hideaway:
I found you...
unearthed, dismantled,
queen of dreams, sister of my heart.
The very thought of you--the girl with no shadow; how lucky you are.
