Shattered by grief and dreaming of vengeance, Penn Cage sees his world collapsing around him. The woman he loves is gone, his principles have been irrevocably compromised, and his father, Dr. Tom Cage, once a pillar of the community, is about to be tried for the murder of a former lover. Most terrifying of all, Dr. Cage seems bent on self-destruction and has frozen Penn out of the trial, preferring to risk dying in prison to revealing the truth to his son.
For decades Dr. Tom Cage has had a second son known to almost no one, the product of an affair with his African-American nurse, Viola Turner. It is this bitter sonPenns half brotherwho set in motion the case against Dr. Cage. But a murder charge may be the least of Toms worries. In the 1960s South, Viola Turner became a nexus point between Penns father and the Double Eagle group, a savage splinter cell of the KKK. Now, led by psychopath Snake Knox, the surviving Double Eagles will stop at nothing to keep their past deeds buried, and they mean to ensure that Dr. Cage either takes the fall for them or takes his secrets to an early grave.
Unable to trust anyonenot even his own motherPenn joins forces with Serenity Butler, a writer investigating his fathers case. Together, Penn and Serenity, a former soldier, desperately battle to crack the Double Eagle group and discover the secret history of both the Cage family and the South itself, risking the only thing they have left to gamble: their lives.
Mississippi Blood is the enthralling conclusion to a breathtaking trilogy seven years in the making. With piercing insight, extraordinary narrative prowess, and a masterful ability to blend history and imagination, #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles illuminates the brutal history of the American South in a highly atmospheric, deeply satisfying, and unforgettable novel.

I don‘t know how, but the last book was the best book in the trilogy. They just kept getting better. “In the end, justice is not about punishment; it's about finding peace and closure.” I‘m not sure about peace, but the closure was as good as it could be. I know there is another one out now, just waiting. I love these characters, so I‘m not sad about it.

This was a perfect ending to the Natchez Burning trilogy. While I'm still upset that my favorite character was killed off in the second book, I really liked one of the new characters introduced in this one. Iles does a great job giving his characters believable motives for their actions and weaves together a mystery full of surprises.

My reading companion since Monday. It‘s been a bonkers week and I‘ve been struggling to read anything each night as my brain is so tired.

Finished this story arc trilogy (Penn Cage numbers 4, 5, and 6). This was my least favorite of the three, but I‘m glad I read it to finish out the arc. My biggest complaints with this series are 1) the continual repetition of plot points and 2) the characters continually allowing the escape of the bad guys when it seems illogical that they‘d be able to do so.

All in all, I‘m glad I read this thought-provoking series.

Book three in the trilogy featuring Penn Cage. For me it was a page turner that I couldn‘t wait to come out. The book, like the previous two before it, arises a lot of emotions. He is the best in his genre in my opinion..

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This would've been five stars, but the whole "I could shoot him now, but I'm not going to because he needs the opportunity to escape and cause more damage" is getting old. ? I just finished it and it's possible that I'm just feeling grumpy. Still really liked the book and the series...

Just finished listening to Mississippi Blood and while it's not my favorite in the Penn Cage / Natchez trilogy, it still entertains with some crazy plot twists and Southern gothic characters. At 28 hours, there were a few areas that were a bit too nostalgic and repetitive, but if you're already invested in this series then it's worth it. #series #southernfiction

I simultaneously never wanted this series to end and also couldn‘t read fast enough to see how this epic story would come to a close. I will recommend this series to EVERYONE- especially to those who like historical fiction (although this is much more recent history- the 50s and 60s). All the stars for this wonderful trilogy. I will definitely check out Iles‘ other books.

JacqMac This series has been on my TBR forever. I keep meaning to start it. 7y

Iles brings the Natchez Burning Trilogy to a triumphant and wholly satisfying conclusion. The Bone Tree seemed to take forever to get going but this final installment, while still lengthy, never lets up on the tension.

Kaye Does this all take place with the same guy and is it like a mystery or detective or cop or lawyer type series ? I saw one of the books at the used bookstore. Wow, was it thick ! (edited) 7y
Lola I know there are prologue books to the trilogy. Do they have to be read first? Asking for a friend....🙃 7y
tammysue @Kaye My husband really enjoyed this trilogy.. he says - Penn Cage is a lawyer turned mayor, this is a mystery series. 7y
See All 12 Comments
Kaye Thanks @whatshesreadingnow ...the day I saw one of them at the store I think it was the first, I noticed it because it was SO thick. I even picked it up and carried it around but put it back. My used bookstore shopping might be a little odd to some. I never read what the books are about, just pick them up, look at the cover and BAM, buy them. For 2 bucks each, you can bring them back if they‘re something you don‘t like. Thank you. (edited) 7y
Minervasbutler @Kaye The trilogy is partly narrated by Penn Cage who is an ex-prosecutor and now Mayor of Natchez. It centres around his father who is on trial for the murder of his ex-lover and nurse. But it delves deep into race crime and even the JFK assassination. So it's all those things you ask and more. 7y
Minervasbutler @Lola I haven't read the earlier books and though there are occasional references I would say the trilogy can be read alone. 7y
Kaye Sounds very good @Minervasbutler ! I should‘ve grabbed it. Back to the bookstore this week. 😮 7y
tammysue @Kaye They‘re each around 800 pages. This was the very first book that got my hubby into reading. He read all three 800 page books in a row! 😛 7y
Kaye @whatshesreadingnow wow, that is terrific ! They must be really good then to keep him interested for that many pages ! Is he a pretty frequent reader now ? 7y
tammysue @Kaye He reads daily now, I‘m kinda jealous.. and he‘s a fast reader unlike me 7y
Kaye That‘s great that he reads daily . A good habit to get into if you have the time. No worries on your speed of reading. I often wonder if people who read slower actually retain more info than those that read fast. As long as you read, the speed doesn‘t count. @whatshesreadingnow (edited) 7y

Day 22 of #MelodiousMusicals and we have #OlManRiver from one of my mum's favourites #Showboat. Thinking of the Mississippi brought me to mind books by John Grisham, as well as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. I read any book I find by this author. Had to wait for last book of trilogy, but it was worth the wait. This one focuses on the murder trial of Dr. Cage, father of the narrator. One witness is murdered on the witness stand by the KKK just as he is about to testify. Yes, the entire book has suspense of this nature. I recommend the entire trilogy.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Ok... Penn Cage is an attorney/mayor of Natchez Mississippi. His father, a beloved doctor of the town, is accused of murdering his African nurse. There are secrets, crimes, corruption, lies and a group called The Double Eagles (similar to the KKK) that come up!! Penn's fiancé is a reporter for the newspaper and I love her!! The author was in a horrible car wreck while writing this trilogy and almost died! He lost one of his legs ? All of his 8y
