Liebe. Hoffung. Ehrlichkeit. Und vor allen Dingen die Freundschaft. "Absolut mitreiend." Jojo Moyes

I should really start looking at content warnings before just blindly diving into books.

The only thing I knew about Eleanor Oliphant is that everyone seems to like the book.
So I had a few triggers pop-up, nevertheless I still found it absolutely brilliant. It was done so realistically, and true to the issues that I almost believed Eleanor was a real person I've met just the other day.

I get the hype.

nanuska_153 Would you consider it a hard book to read? I'm trying to pick the book for the next month's library book club and this has been on my radar but the last picks were rather depressing, I think we need something a bit... uplifting 4w
Enchanted_Bibliophile @nanuska_153 I think it would be a great book club read. Even with the depressing theme it's written in a light sense, if that makes sense. There are a few darker chapters, but it's done in a way that gets you through them quickly. I would just point out the content triggers before hand to all. The emotional abuse caught me totally off guard. 4w
nanuska_153 @Enchanted_Bibliophile thanks so much for that! And for the heads up about the content triggers. Emotional abuse is a big one for me too, so it's good to know it's coming ❤️ 4w

🍁 Stressed. Anxious. Chunky. 🤣🤣

🍁🍁 Honest. Kind hearted. Intelligent. Friendly. Warm. Funny.

🍁🍁🍁 I was gonna say Mrs Danvers as a joke, but I'm gonna go with Eleanor Oliphant. Because I spent a lot of time as a teenager and beyond not knowing how to connect with people and not understanding how to be social. I don't think I'm like her now, but I empathised hard.

Well, I wish it could be that easy.

Currently reading this book and somehow I can relate to Eleanor's way of thinking. The quote was said by her Mummy, though. She's clearly not on the list of characters I have sympathy for.

Twelve chapters done, and I've been enjoying the flow so far.

Welcome to the world of Eleanor Oliphant where everything is fine! But it‘s not….What a quirky character Eleanor is. She has no friends, has had only one relationship and is laughed at by her coworkers. An unfortunate incident brings her and a coworker Raymond together where we begin to see the layers of Eleanor peeled away and a healing journey begins. Sad, funny, hopeful and quirky read. 😊

CatLass007 I hope the author makes good money from the movie. I probably won‘t watch it because, in all likelihood, it will be a disappointment. I don‘t want to be pessimistic but an adaptation almost never holds up when compared to the source material. 6mo
Bec_lectic @CatLass007 I agree! Movies always ruin the book. 6mo
CatLass007 About 99% of the time. The only exceptions that come to mind are The Princess Bride and Tales of the City. Wonderful books, wonderful movies! The movies are not better than the books but they definitely are at the same level of quality. 6mo

First book of 2024 complete.
This book took awhile to get into. A little after 50% I started asking questions about what was actually happening to Eleanor. Because it was a buddy read, I kept with it. I'm glad I did. I was surprised by the twist. And the ending was very heartwarming. I LOVE GLEN!

This didn‘t keep my attention and reminded me a bit of Olive Kitteridge. It was quite depressing and the writing was boring, I mean the writing is decent but the subject was drab and boring. Eleanor is the victim of extensive child abuse that has left her as a strange, naive adult. But, here‘s the thing, this book is painted in a different light but it‘s about a woman who had a very f*cked up childhood. Book #33 in 2033 pic of my reading buddy.

I realised during the first chapter that I had read this before, but I decided to persevere because I remember enjoying it. It's a charming story of an ordinary woman who has been pushed to live in an extraordinary way. It's a touching description of the end of loneliness, and she is so endearing and it's easy for me to see similarities between our approaches to life. Starts funny, gets deeper, ends poignantly with space to imagine her future. 😍

This book was the current Book Club Pick for my workplace — but surprise! It was a bit of a rouse to throw a baby shower for a coworker. (We all read the book, too - though 😂)

I enjoyed Eleanor‘s growth - although by a third in you kind of knew where the novel was headed and the *turn* at the end wasn‘t surprising either. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Happy Readathon to everyone participating! I had too many things on my weekend calendar to sign up, but I‘m still fitting in some reading/listening. This book wasn‘t quite what I was expecting, in fact quite a bit darker. Yet, I ended up really enjoying Eleanor‘s story and her character growth. It had a wonderful cast of characters. I hadn‘t even realized it was set in #Scotland, but I listened to the #audiobook, and the narration was fantastic.

When I first started reading this, I was prepared to rate it three stars believing it to be another mediocre read. However, Eleanor slowly but surely grew on me until I fell in love with her character and story.

Themes such as humour, despair, friendship and loneliness are poignantly well written throughout. A beautifully touching and impressive debut from Honeyman.

I wanted to love this book, but I didn't. At one point, I felt like I was just "getting through it", though it does improve. I can't put my finger on what, exactly, leads to my feelings of apathy? about it, but there are some. That said, I actually didn't see the twist coming (and that's a rarity for me), so I was pleasantly surprised about that.
The book was cute. The characters were realistic. I just didn't really connect.
