Q is for Quarry
Q is for Quarry | Sue Grafton
38 posts | 50 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
She was a 'Jane Doe', an unidentified white female whose decomposed body was discovered near a quarry off California's Highway 1. The case fell to the Santa Teresa County Sheriff's Department, but the detectives had little to go on, and after months of investigation, the murder remained unsolved. That was eighteen years ago. Now the two men who found the body, both nearing the end of long careers in law enforcement, want one last shot at the case . . . and they turn to Kinsey Millhone to help them find closure. But revisiting the past can be a dangerous business, and what begins with the pursuit of Jane Doe's real identity ends in a high-risk hunt for her killer. Based on an unsolved homicide that occured in 1969, Q is for Quarry and Grafton's interest in the case have renewed police efforts. The body has been exhumed, and a facial reconstruction made that appears in the last pages of the novel. It is hoped that the photograph will trigger memories that may lead to a positive identification.

Finished this one last night (I couldn‘t sleep, not sure really why as I was busy all day) But always helpful to have a good book to get lost in :)

This was a good detective novel - my first Grafton (used for Q in #AlphabeticalBingo and #BookSpinBingo and one goal of #20in4 ) - Kinsey is a good MC and her two police side kicks in this one were fun. Kinsey is brought in to help solve a cold case - find out who Jane Doe is and who murdered her - based on a real life case (unfortunately that Jane Doe was never solved).

JudeCC The queens gambit! 🙌🙌 If you saw the series, you‘ll see how extremely similar they are. It‘s one of my favorite books into movies ever cause they did their best to keep as many details as possible. Beautiful work. Love the writing. If you haven‘t watched the series you are in for a treat. 😃🥳 The only complaint I have is that the print I had, the letters were so small and packed together. It was hard for me to read quickly. Hope you enjoy it. 1y
bthegood @WJCintron thanks - I did not watch the series - so it will be a treat 🙂 1y

I've never read a Sue Grafton novel - but realized this would be great for #AlphabeticalBingo - if I like it I might have to hit the X and Y books 🙂

Make a great day everyone - 🌞

JudeCC Yes! It‘s sooo sad. She died and never got to publish the Z. 😢 I haven‘t read those. 1y

The next four Kinsey Millhone books down. The tagged is my favorite of the bunch, but they changed the narrator on book O - I‘m not nuts about how she narrates Henry. She makes him sound too frail for his thriving, fierce octogenarian persona.

This is my favorite Sue Grafton book so far. Probably because the plot is based on a true case of a young woman murdered and her body left in a quarry. The homicide occurred in 1969 and the young woman has never been identified. There are artist sketches of the woman at the end of the book, hoping someone will identify her. Grafton did a great job developing a story about this woman and continued to build Kinsey‘s story too. #MountTBR

Susanita It‘s one of my favorites of hers as well. 2y

I felt like this one was a little long. I did enjoy it but had to re-listen to parts as it didn‘t always keep me engrossed. It was interesting to learn about the real Jane Doe that inspired this story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kinsey is asked to help on a cold case by 2 retired detectives from Santa Theresa. I enjoy the story being told as a report. Kinsey and the detectives do manage to turn up some new information that inspires them with hope they can solve the case.

This audiobook was fine but I didn‘t care for the end. I feel this murder mystery was wrapped up as an afterthought and the two major characters were just left without much follow up.

Read this years ago for World Book Night and was genuinely surprised that I enjoyed it. I've never been a mystery reader and lumped the whole genre into plot driven slash 'em ups. Much respect to Grafton and her fantastic cast of characters for teaching me that isn't so. Having just finished A, I wanted to go back and review this one as well. I'll probably never get around to the rest of the series but I am happy to have read these two. #mcpl

Mehso-so

Who says Monday's suck??? I was able to finish my letter Q for #LitsyAtoZ and had time to enjoy another healthy smoothie! This time it was unsweetened almond milk, 🍍,🍓 mango and 🍌 Yum! I was meh about this read, would not want to read any others in the series 😐I probably would not have read this mystery if not for the challenge. I don't think crime procedures are my thing anymore! 21/26 Only 5 more to go!

TrishB I've read A so far and haven't yet fancied anymore. I do like crime series - but the MC's really have to appeal to me. 8y

I absolutely loved this one. Both the author and Kinsey Millhone the central character of this series have matured, I love them. You don't have to read them in order to keep track but it is so enjoyable to see the character develop.

Martyn_J_Pass Just a heads up to another series, 'Spenser' by Robert Parker. Same great reasons for reading this detective too. They're short reads with some great character progression over the entire collection and Spenser's philosophy on life is fantastic given the age. 8y

My #favefemalecharacter is definitely Kinsey Milhone. Equipped with her all-purpose indestructible black dress and fueled by QP w/ cheese, she'll take on any case, often at her own peril. Quarry is particularly interesting, as it was inspired by a real-life missing person case. #augustphotochallenge @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
