Master and Commander (Vol. Book 1) (Aubrey/Maturin Novels)
Master and Commander (Vol. Book 1) (Aubrey/Maturin Novels) | Patrick O'Brian
The beginning of the sweeping Aubrey-Maturin series. "The best sea story I have ever read."Sir Francis Chichester This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, R.N., and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against a thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of a life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the roar of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

Did an episode on The Wager. We talked scurvy, old timey wooden ships, and whether it'd be okay for Jerry Jones to press gang Tom Brady out of retirement.

Jack Aubrey invites Stephen Maturin to become his ship's doctor/surgeon in 1800.

It is certainly a steep learning curve as the author makes no concessions to readers' ignorance of naval terminology and practice of the period. There were definitely times when I had no idea what was going on. it certainly throws into relief how much other authors play down the strangeness of the past.

Not set in France but have wanted to read Master and Commander for a long time. Maybe I‘ll get half credit 😂

ChaoticMissAdventures This was the first book I thought of with the prompt, I have never read it, but it looks great, and I totally think it counts. 13mo

#12Booksin2021

This was a re-read,and I meant to go directly on to the second book...oops... but it‘s on the TBR for 2022. Still, I really enjoyed this revisit. Knowing I wouldn‘t understand all the nautical terms allowed me to relax and just appreciate the adventure of it all. And it is riveting. Even though I remembered what happened in general, I was holding my breath for those tense moments when Captain Aubrey and crew were in peril.

LeahBergen Yes, I‘ve been telling myself to read more of the series this year, too! 3y

Mixed feelings about this one. Strong characters and plot, but some terribly boring "ship speak" throughout.

TheAromaofBooks We all know I'm against abridged editions, but sometimes I think an exception could be made for books full of boat chatter! 😂 4y
AllisonM89 @TheAromaofBooks there's a part early on when the surgeon gets a tour of the ship and i almost called it quits! It went in FOREVER and was nothing more than entirely too many pages of ship terminology 😂 4y

Sunraven @Sweetkokoro: Piemur? Or was it the guy specifically on your copy? 😆 I remember liking Piemur a lot, too, but for some reason I ended up being more eh about characters I love when they got their own whole book. Like when Masterharper came out, I think I remember thinking, “I liked Robinton better before I knew all of that.” Not sure why it ends up that way, looking back ... Maybe I need to re-read and see if it holds! 😉 (edited) 5y
Sweetkokoro Yah Piemur, I always envisioned the guy on the cover was Piemur hahaha XD I don‘t know what it was I just loved him so much. I spent a few months tracking down that specific cover for my collection too just so I could reminisce it haha. 5y
Sunraven @Sweetkokoro: Well, I can‘t point fingers, I‘ve been known to buy just the volumes of a manga that have my favorite character(s) in them, in Japanese so I can read what they actually said in the original, even though I‘m basically illiterate in Japanese. 😆 5y

April, 1800. Minorca. Jack Aubrey has just been given command of a sloop, the Sophie, and met his hetero life-mate Dr Maturin. Due to “Goldilocks” Aubrey‘s gleeful (and in some way I can‘t put my finger on, extremely endearing) greed and cleverness he racks up an impressive number of wins against the French and Spanish. Then loses everything. Luckily there are many many more books to go.

Loved these guys and the flair of O‘Brian‘s writing.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Y‘know @shareyourghost I found myself thinking often that this could easily be turned into a wacky buddy comedy that was still a loyal adaptation. The audio narrator was solid but made everyone sound much older than their actual ages. (edited) 6y

My favorite movie of all time. And then, just last year, I found out it was based on a book! And then. Oh AND THEN! I found out it's not *a* book, but a TWENTY-ONE book series!
Reading (and listening to) book one brought me right back into my favorite story, except now there's more details, more backstory, more jokes. There was a lot of jargon, to be sure, but I love Stephen Maturin almost as much as Rhy Maresh, so... I lived with it :P
