I knew nothing about this book or its author when I picked it up. Highly recommend. I laughed a lot, enjoyed the adventures and descriptions of both people and non-human animals. The word ‘lugubrious‘ is now etched into my vocabulary, not due to the book being morose but the words use which I had hardly seen before. I was sorry to learn that Larry‘s then wife was written out of the story, I guess it made it easier to write but still, unfortunate.

1. Yes! I have the same last name as my dad (😉 just kidding). But I really do have the same middle name as my uncle Joe and my cousins Mike and Clint. But theirs is spelled “Lee” and mine is “Leigh.”
2. Only child here. I have a stepbrother and stepsister, but we‘re not close. I haven‘t seen them in close to 20 years.
3. Tagged! I loved the Durrells! Everyone was such a character. #WondrousWednesday

The part of Christmas Day that I am most thankful for is that, at the age of 54, I still get to spend it with these two - my mum and dad. I am privileged to have both my parents in reasonably good health.

This is the generation of my family before me, the last of whom, my Uncle Tony, was laid to rest today. He's kneeling at the front of the photo next to my Auntie Anne on the left. My mum and dad are the couple on the right. My Auntie Jill, at whose 21st birthday this photo was taken, is centre, flanked by my Nana and Grandad, with her husband, my Uncle Chris, seated at the left. All finally together again ❤️

Even though I‘m almost 2 weeks late finishing this, I just loved it so much! It‘s more a collection of anecdotes as opposed to a continuous story, but all the stories were so charming. Larry‘s relationship with his mother reminded me of stories of my dad (whose name was also Larry) and grandmother. I even found myself googling scorpions with a new appreciation (I mean, I still don‘t want to meet one…but I see now the fascination). And ⬇️

Maggie4483 ↪️ nightswimming in the Mediterranean with phosphorescent porpoises is my personal definition of LIVING. YOUR. BEST. LIFE. ❤️🇬🇷❤️ I can‘t wait to read the rest of this series. 3y

3.75/5 ⭐️ I enjoyed all the adventures Gerry went on and all the family commotion. Larry was so dramatic😂 I wish Gerry wouldn't have stole so many animals from their homes, especially the babies.

What did you think of it? Any favorite characters or animals?

I‘m not sure what I expected starting this, but it wasn‘t this. I can‘t remember the last time I laughed so much reading a book. Durrell just have a way of describing things that make them funny.

When Gerald was 10 yrs (in 1935), his family decides to move to Corfu. His family incl. him, his mother and 3 older siblings.

Gerald loves animals and will bring all kinds home with him, not always to his family‘s approval.

AnneCecilie I‘m not sure every mother would react with the same calmness that his mother does to all these animals. I‘m so glad you picked this as our group read #foodandlit #Greece @Catsandbooks I will try to read the rest of the trilogy over the summer @Texreader @Butterfinger 3y

Maggie4483 Yes! I just read the chapter with Achilles and Quasimodo. I loved that the tortoise would cuddle up to the family when they sat in the garden, and that the pigeon liked to dance. You don‘t always think about reptiles and birds having personalities like dogs and cats. But those stories were both so sweet (and definitely made me consider adopting a new pet 🐢 🐦). 3y
AnneCecilie I haven‘t started it yet. Will do so in the upcoming week. 3y
Catsandbooks @Maggie4483 ik I thought that was so sweet too! Other animals aside from classic pets are so much more complex than we give them credit for. 3y

A gorgeously written, fun, comforting book. Few books really live up to being equally enjoyable for people of every age but this one truly does! Laugh out loud funny in places, then switching without a breath in between to some absolutely beautiful soft watercolour writing about the landscape and the animals. @ju.ca.no & i have been reading children‘s classics together & we have been having so much fun with them. 👯‍♀️

This autobiographical account of Gerry & his family‘s adventures is a complete joyride, a total roller coaster of events. It‘s the first book in a 3 part series.

Gerry (Gerald Durrell) & his family – which includes mother, two elder brothers, & an elder sister – leave England‘s windy, grey August & move to sunny Corfu in Greece. 👇🏽

Tanisha_A Here begin the adventures – movement from one villa to the other (strawberry-pink villa to daffodil-yellow villa to snow-white villa) for absolutely ridiculous reasons; meeting many interesting & eccentric locals and enjoying Greek life; inviting friends & organising parties; encountering wonderful sights (phosphorescence), Gerry‘s multiple experiences & incidents with local fauna, 👇🏽 3y
Tanisha_A (spiders, lizards, snakes, scorpions, magpies, tortoises etc) and his extensive interest in studying them. 3y

„I can‘t go just like that. I have to arrange something about this house.“
„Arrange? Arrange what, for heaven‘s sake? Sell it.“
(...)
„Don‘t be ridiculous, dear,“ said Mother firmly;“ that‘s quite out of question. It would be madness.“
So we sold the house and fled from the gloom of the English summer, like a flock of migratibg swallows.

What a great start into this book! I think I will enjoy this a lot☺️

Gerry‘s tales of growing up on the island of Corfu are delightful and almost too crazy to be true. But the real hero of the book is his Mother, who I can only imagine must have been taking a steady stream of quaaludes in order to take in stride the antics of her moody teenagers while simultaneously allowing her house to be overrun with wild animals as pets 🐸🐶🦅🪱🕷🦂🐍🐢

SFM13
My Family and Other Animals | Gerald Durrell, Jocelyn Potter

For a week or so the wind played with the island, patting it, stroking it, humming to itself among the bare branches. Then there was a lull, a few days' strange calm; suddenly, when you least expected it, the wind would be back. But it was a changed wind, a mad, hooting, bellowing wind that leaped down on the island and tried to blow it into the sea.

SFM13 I loved reading Gerald's humorous anecdotes, my favorite was the blow-by-blow account of a battle between a gecko named Geronimo and Cecily, a feisty praying mantis. His enchanting way of describing island scenery really brought the story to life for me. Here is an example of his writing style … easily relatable considering the mountain winds that blew outside my window as I lay reading, snug in my warm cozy bed. 5y

January began with reflections from Gerald Durrell (b. Jan. 7, 1925) in his book My Family and Other Animals. During my reading adventure, I discovered “The Durrells in Corfu,” a PBS series available on Amazon Prime Video. If you haven't seen this yet, it is worth checking out. The series is classified a comedy drama, which is also an accurate description of Gerald Durrell's writing style.

Light, breezy and old-fashioned in the best way, this memoir of a family‘s move to Corfu in the 30‘s is just so charming. Part nature writer‘s love letter to an island, part study of the eccentric locals and his family through the eyes of a creature-obsessed 10 yo boy, this book captured my heart. I particularly loved Roger, the old family dog, who is anthropomorphized into a curious little chap and loyal companion to Gerry.

I read this book many moons ago as a prescribed book in highschool. A couple of years ago my dad bought a copy at our church "bazaar" and naturally it ended on the #TBRShelve and now its time finally came...only to find that this copy was in fact also a highschool prescribed copy (not my one though). The entire book has notes and scribbles and explanations in Afrikaans and I absolutely love it and I wonder...why was it not handed back? ?????

A story of Gerald Durrell when he was 10 years old, and his family‘s four-year migration from England to Corfu in the 1930s. There he developed his passion for wildlife, local flora and fauna, and animals play an important part in the tale. Still on my #tbr.

My Family and Other Animals (Revised) | Gerald Malcolm Durrell

When the Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu. It is a delightful account of Durrell‘s family‘s experiences, from the many eccentric hangers-on to the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, scorpions, geckoes, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home. #family #fallintoreading
