The Flight Attendant
The Flight Attendant: A Novel | Chris Bohjalian
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Guest Room, a powerful story about the ways an entire life can change in one night: A flight attendant wakes up in the wrong hotel, in the wrong bed, with a dead man - and no idea what happened. Cassandra Bowden is no stranger to hungover mornings. She's a binge drinker, her job with the airline making it easy to find adventure, and the occasional blackouts seem to be inevitable. She lives with them, and the accompanying self-loathing. When she awakes in a Dubai hotel room, she tries to piece the previous night back together, already counting the minutes until she has to catch her crew shuttle to the airport. She quietly slides out of bed, careful not to aggravate her already pounding head, and looks at the man she spent the night with. She sees his dark hair. His utter stillness. And blood, a slick, still wet pool on the crisp white sheets. Afraid to call the police - she's a single woman alone in a hotel room far from home - Cassie begins to lie. She lies as she joins the other flight attendants and pilots in the van. She lies on the way to Paris as she works the first class cabin. She lies to the FBI agents in New York who meet her at the gate. Soon it's too late to come clean-or face the truth about what really happened back in Dubai. Could she have killed him? If not, who did? Set amid the captivating world of those whose lives unfold at forty thousand feet, The Flight Attendant unveils a spellbinding story of memory, of the giddy pleasures of alcohol and the devastating consequences of addiction, and of murder far from home.

This started off really good, but I have to admit I wasn‘t as interested in some parts (possible like the Russian spy stuff and when the reader followed the “bad guys”). But following Cassie as she tried to figure out what to do certainly kept me interested. And knowing and following the “bad guys” separately did keep up the tension in parts of the book, so there was a reason for it.

tpixie Now you‘ll have to watch the show! I think on Max… 2mo

Meh.
It was a bit difficult to empathize with the protagonist, as her poor decision-making skills played a big part in all of her problems. It's an okay read, but I wouldn't rush out to pick it up. Now I have to check out the show, because I do feel the storyline has potential.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I had to stop watching the show after 2 episodes for the same reason. She was giving me anxiety with all her bad decisions. Lol. 8mo

Ugh. I didn't like this one at all. Every other sentence was about drinking and alcohol. I don't care if books talk about that, but it didn't need so much of it. Also I know this character is suppose to be drunk a lot, but even when she was sober she made the most stupid decisions. I can't stand books that make their main characters make stupid decisions at every turn. Just can't stand it. And what the hell was that ending? 1/5

swishandflick Totally agree, I felt the same way! I think my least favorite thriller trope is the "what happened while I was black out drunk" schtick. 1y

Well this was fun! I have NOT watched the show so I was interested throughout to see what was going to happen. Cassandra is a flight attendant who enjoys her drunken debauchery. This is the story of Cassandra trying to fill figure out what happened when she got black out drunk, how to deal with the situation, and what's next. This is my 3rd Chris Bohjalian novel, after Midwives and The Hour of The Witch both of which I rated 5 stars. I enjoy it but was my least of the 3 and I will probably rate a 3 on good reads. Still will not be my last of his. The ending was unpredictable but very unrealistic and I found it humorous for some reason. Shes a very unlikable character that has a drinking problem which causes a hard fast downward spiral.

This was my first @ChrisBohjalian book, and it certainly won't be my last. Wow! So many unexpected twists and turns in the plot, I didn't want to put it down. Cassandra is a flight attendant who likes to drink too much and have a good time. She flirts with a man on one of her flights and ends up spending the night with him, but wakes up the next morning to find him dead.

I liked the premise of this book. It has action, mystery and suspense. I think it describes very well a person who has drinking problems where the person take poor decisions to resolve problems that usually put his/her life at risk, no self control. But the ending of this novel was so abrupt, too easy and unbelievable😳It was like a great fall how it ended🤷🏽‍♀️3⭐️

This wasn‘t nearly as good as I thought it would be 😕. The main character, Cassie, was so unlikeable. She completely refuses to take any responsibility for her actions or change anything for the majority of the story. She just does what she wants at all times, regardless of the outcomes, but expects those she comes into contact with to do as she says or becomes indignant. The show did such a better job building her character and making 👇🏻

candc320 Cont‘d: making her seem so much more sympathetic and well rounded. It also made me care more for the other characters, while the book just made almost everyone seem horrid, other than the lawyer (I liked her a lot). Also we are told pretty early what really happened which was kind of weird. The narrators did a pretty good job, though. 🌟🌟🌟 2y

***My review for this book is on the comment area. A 6 part of a satire I wrote as an example of the reasons why I didn't like the book. Just for FUN! 😂
My personal opinion. 🙂👍 ⭐ 1 star
*If you're reading this, read the first 6 comments below to fully understand.
There's a word limit. I can't post the full text in the description. My apologies

WJCintron PART ONE:
I grab my bottle of water resting over the mahogany table to my left, and take a long sip from it. A refreshing one, that washes all my thirst away along with the procrastination I've been carrying like a chip on my shoulder for the last couple of weeks. I sit on a desk chair, allowing my body to fill every diameter, inch and empty space available for my body to rest. My skin, adhering to the cold leather of its tapestry.
3y
WJCintron PART TWO:
No, I'm not naked, but the shorts I'm wearing allow me to enjoy the soothing breeze coming from the air conditioner working at full blast. It may be fighting against the three-digit weather outside. I guess Autumn is still on lockdown...
Funny how this is a gamer's chair, which I've never used for the specific purpose it was manufactured.
3y
WJCintron PART THREE:
You may ask why, and the reason behind it, is the simple fact that it has a longer measurement on the back rest which protects my back as well as my neck. I finally look up at the screen. My laptop rests over my thighs. The heat emerging from it, somehow contrasting with the cool texture of the cushion underneath my legs. Then, I focus on the illuminated monitor in front of me and write the last three letter acronym of my review.
(edited) 3y
See All 9 Comments
WJCintron PART FOUR:
The DNF acronym, blunt in nature, appears to stare at me as the text cursor blinks non stop right beside it. Somehow inciting me to elaborate the meaning of each and every letter. I could care less, so I let my creativity run loose, thinking of tons of words that could follow those letters, like: Do Not Forget, Do Not Fail, Do Not... Until the F bomb reaches my tongue and I'm forced to remember the primal motive of this message.
3y
WJCintron PART FIVE:
I need to get the frustration out of my chest. Immediately, I regroup and slide the cursor over the bright blue # 4267B2 color of the 'Post' button on the bottom of the pop up window. I let it linger for a couple of seconds, checking it twice, but never ever minding if I'm being naughty or nice. Then I cringe, while stabbing the hell out of the keyboard with a single press of my index finger.
3y
WJCintron PART SIX:
For a millisecond, the screen goes blank, until the message appears triumphantly in front of me. I feel much better now. I shared my opinion. My precious personal opinion. My eyes sparkling as they stare at the beautiful one yellow star rating below the title.

“The prettiest of them all!“ I exclaim and reach for a better book to read.
(edited) 3y
WJCintron THOUGHTS:
GOOD GOD!
YES! This is a satire. I'm narrating what I did while writing a review for the book. TOO Wordy, and to me an unlikeable MC. I couldn't bear almost 12hrs or extensive descriptions. Not my cup of tea. BAIL!
(edited) 3y
Traci1 It's hard to like a character who is just one big bad decision after another. 3y
WJCintron @Traci1 Yup! She was so unlikeable! An alcoholic, promiscuous brat. Not like Beth, The Queen's Gambit's MC. She also was an alcoholic, drug addict and stubborn character. But you fall in love with her and root for her. Walter Tevis did an amazing job bleeding her out. 😃 3y

Fast paced mystery/thriller with an unreliable narrator. I found myself caught up in the story and curious about where things would end.

An alcoholic flight attendant wakes up in a hotel room in Dubai next to a dead man who's obviously been murdered. That's how this compelling psychological thriller begins. It's definitely a slower burn, and that didn't bother me at all.

Recommend if you like the trope of the somewhat unlikable character (or at least one who makes poor decisions consistently) finding themself in an unlikely, dangerous situation that they must navigate.

Just okay. I get a little frustrated with self-destructive characters but it wasn‘t just that which kept me from fully enjoying this book. I guess it didn‘t quite feel like a mystery or a thriller to me. It also seemed to progress slowly and then speed up at the very end so the pacing could have been better. Not a bad read but I‘m glad I didn‘t spend money on it and waited for the library hold.I won‘t be watching the show. Just not for me 😐

AlaMich I‘m watching the show right now. It got off to an interesting start, but it‘s kind of a mess now. Subplots that have zero to do with anything, and the main plot is pretty confusing. 3y

I would never have picked this book for myself. I read this for #LMPBC and thought it was marvelous. The MC is a total mess. An alcoholic with a pension for self destructive behavior. This was between a “pick” and “so-so” for me. The premise was great, the setting intriguing, and the characters dysfunctional enough to be interesting. There were even a couple of great plot twists that kept it suspenseful. However, the story got bogged down in a few places and could not hold my attention. Also thought that the story was a bit anticlimactic. I guess I expected more. This is a flight I would not be sad if I missed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jillylovesbooks I haven‘t had a chance to read the book, but I did catch the series based on it on HBO. My understanding is that some changes were made from the book that improved the story. I enjoyed the series. 3y

Just finished the book on audio and am in the midst of watching the series. Seems to be an unpopular opinion here, but I didn‘t love this book and am not particularly loving the series either, though I will follow through to the end. An intriguing base story line, but too convoluted with the spy element and I just really don‘t like the main character at all. I generally like Chris Bohjalian, but this one missed the mark for me.

swishandflick I read this when it first came out and wasn't a fan either! I think I'm just completely over plots that hinge on the memory of someone who is constantly blackout drunk. 3y
