The Travelling Cat Chronicles
The Travelling Cat Chronicles | Hiro Arikawa
RECOMMENDED BY THOUSANDS OF INTERNATIONAL READERS - the tender feelgood story of a man's journey around Japan with a streetcat. Translated by Philip Gabriel, a translator of Murakami. INCLUDES SPECIALLY COMMISSIONED LINE-DRAWINGS 'Delightful . . . the uniqueness of this book is its subtle yet persistent charm that insinuates itself into your heart long after the encounter has ended' FIONA MELROSE, author of Midwinter **************************** It's not the journey that counts, but who's at your side. Nana is on a road trip, but he is not sure where he is going. All that matters is that he can sit beside his beloved owner Satoru in the front seat of his silver van. Satoru is keen to visit three old friends from his youth, though Nana doesnt know why and Satoru wont say. Set against the backdrop of Japans changing seasons and narrated with a rare gentleness and humour, Nanas story explores the wonder and thrill of lifes unexpected detours. It is about the value of friendship and solitude, and knowing when to give and when to take. TRAVELLING CAT has already demonstrated its power to move thousands of readers with a message of kindness and truth. It shows, above all, how acts of love, both great and small, can transform our lives.

Well, this was a unique little fun endearing read! A story from the lens of an anthropomorphised cat and his human pet parent as they travel across Japan? Sign me up. Witty, sassy writing, sweet characters, unique plot. A really wonderful read.

Finished this early in the week for #FoodandLit #Japan & loved it. I usually have *issues* with pet stories that get sad—I just can‘t take it, especially as my Max🐱is on the downslope to 20 & showing it more every day. This book made me cry but it also made me smile. Nana the cat & his human Satoru have a wonderful relationship & Nana was written as just having the right amount of snark & cattitude. A special book, probably 4.5 ⭐️ for me. ⬇️

DebinHawaii Because this was for #foodandlitJapan I bought a Japanese Fruit Sando from a new shop here last week to pair with it. This sandwich has fruit—in this case strawberries + soft milk bread (crusts cut off) + a just slightly heavy whipped cream. It was delicious & I think would make a great "Sanji no Oyatsu" (translates to 3 o'clock snack) as Satoru & Nana traveled in the silver van. 3w
LeahBergen Aww! Give that sweet ol‘ Max a kiss from me! 😘 3w
DebinHawaii @LeahBergen I will! 😽❤️ 3w
Catsandbooks Glad you liked the book! And that sandwich sounds delicious! 3w
rubyslippersreads I was afraid to read this, but after your review, maybe I‘ll give it a try. Nicky and Sadie send all their love to you and Max. 😽 3w

"There are so many things in life that are beyond our control."
This novel proves that realizing that truth doesn't have to mean living in despair or numbness or anger.
Very grateful to this snarky/sweet feline, and his caretaker, for the journey I got to go on with them.
Have you ever held any fondness for a cat? Yes? You will cry.
Have you ever lost a loved one? Yes? YOU WILL CRY.

I absolutely loved this book told from a cat‘s perspective. So tender and tinted with both joy and sorrow.

There was a part of the story that I did feel was unnecessary. But overall, it doesn‘t detract from the book.

The narration was amazing! One of the best on Audible. A definite must-listen for everyone. In fact, I say listen to the book rather than read.

If you‘re a cat lover, this will really touch your heart and warm your soul.

I really enjoyed the narration by Nana the cat, the cute illustrations, and such a powerful story of the bond between an owner and his cat ❤️

It‘s a sweet book. I enjoyed reading about how the cat and Satoru met and their friendship developed. Once they started travelling I got bored and found the story a bit dull and sentimental. If you‘re a cat lover, you might enjoy it.

The travelling cat Chronicles is the only book that made me cry this year.
It's was fully unexpected
I got attached to the main character from the beginning and it was such a fun read how a cat perceives the world that surrounds it and the humans and animals it encounters.
Seriously love the bond between the cat and his owner, which help the cat when he was injured and the journey spent together.
Absolute ❤️

I read a lot of great books this year, but this book easily made it to the top of my list of favorites. For such a short, simply written book, it contains volumes. Without spoiling anything, it just captures Japanese culture so well. And the titular cat. I love this book so much, and I'll probably be talking about it for years to come.

⭐: 5

I loved this quiet little book about a stray cat and the human rescues him from the street. Together they form an unbreakable bond.
Written by Hiro Arikawa the story takes place in Japan with beautiful descriptions of ordinary places and people.
I've gifted two friends with copies of this book and thinking of giving it to a few more friends at Christmas.

A charming Japanese novel in which a beloved cat helps a sweet chap come to terms with human suffering and mortality: not just a plot but a burgeoning genre, I think (that's merely an observation, not a criticism)! Nana's streetcat voice, and the deft touches of humour, keeps the whole thing from drowning in syrup. I found it really rather touching.
I'd recommend waiting for a bit if you've recently lost a loved one, whether human or otherwise.

Sweet, charming & uplifting but also made me cry multiple times. Which means it was perfect. So glad I waited till I was ready for it. It called out to me yesterday when picking my next book & now I know why. Just what I needed & I completely adored it. Nana is written so well, w/a dry voice rather than the usual baby voice animal narrators get. The bond b/t him & Satoru is lovely. AND THE ENDING OMG OCEAN OF TEARS. A real gem & a new fave. 5/5 ⭐️

This is a really compelling and beautifully narrated book. I don't generally read anything that has to do with animals narrating or being the characters, but I have to say this is one of a kind exception. Anyone who has a cat, or any pet for that matter, will find this book amusing and relatable. The ending had me tear-eyed. Nana is so intriguing that he will have you feline good. Haha. I highly reccomend reading this book.
