bailedDNF at 150 pages. No points for this YA HFic impulse read. Following the basic history of The Gunpowder Plot using a teen protagonist whose father is Guy Fawkes. Slow pace, slow characters, boring. Uses a color magic system that isn‘t explained. Twists that aren‘t twisty due to unsubtle language & plot. Little action in these 150 pages. Someone will love this book & I hope they do.
Really not feeling work right now so I'm spending some time getting my reading in order. I'm soooo far behind on my reading so far this year but this month is going to be my "get back to it" month ??

This was a fun take on the Gunpowder Plot. The writing felt a bit juvenile but I liked the magic system and there was enough action to keep me invested. I‘m glad the historical ending to the Gunpowder Plot wasn‘t changed or romanticized.

pickI really enjoyed Fawkes I just thought it was super interesting yet again Nadine Brandes writing style is so beautiful.I loved the concept about the masks and just the magic in general,I never knew of the gunpowder plot going into this book but I know it‘s literally history with some fantasy vibes.Can‘t we just talk about Norwood? I literally love Norwood so much is character was amazing! But it was sad whatever happened to him,totally recommend!
When I finished Romanov I wanted to read another book by Nadine Brandes so I‘m currently reading fawkes and I‘m actually enjoying it so far!

so-soI'm actually really glad I reread this! Emma's definitely my favourite character of everyone and I love the views on race and the anti-bigotry message. I think the plague concept and magic system was a bit of a hotness with very little information offered voluntarily. I needed more non-essential information given steadily throughout to develop EVERYTHING more and make the twists FAR less obvious
Time to give this book another shot now that I'm not like...dying of the plague like last time
so-soA decent story with lots of potential, but after all was said and done, this book feel short. It's sad, bc it had a lot going for it (plot, characters, etc.), but the story lacked that punch or awe factor. Overall, it was decent!
Even more sad I talked my wife @TheBookKeepers into reading it too, but felt bad about it. I was always ahead of her in the reading, and towards the end i knew this wasn't to her standards, lol!
bailedThis is a DNF for me. The storyline felt like it moved along at a rushed pace and just didn‘t give the reader time to truly connect to the world. It felt underdeveloped in my opinion.
panDisappointing - the historical element is good as is the telling of a more diverse sense of early Stewart history BUT the magical elements were confused and not fleshed out. I am also confused about the reinterpretation of the religious issues of the day which were decidedly lacking in subtlety. pickThis story was extremely well written and creative. I finished it a little over a week ago and I'm still thinking about it. You can tell everything was thought out and everything flowed well. I gave it 5/5 stars
so-soYa fantasy mixed with historical fiction. The rules of the magic and universe were not super clear. And because it was historical fiction, the main plot was easy to guess. But it was a fun and quick read.
pickThis was an interesting blend of fantasy and history. I'll admit that I'm only lightly aware of Guy Fawkes and the November Plot so I'm sure there were pieces that I missed along the way. I like the premise and the writing was good but I felt midway through that we were just kind of killing time. The female MC reveal was a nice twist though.

The war between catholics and protestants becomes a war between Keepers and Igniters, who disagree about the proper relationship with White Light. The plague turns people to stone. And a plot to kill King James helps discover intriguing characters: Thomas Fawkes, son of a famous Keeper soldier, and Emma, a young Igniter well versed in color powers because of her close relationship with White Light.
I might bail.
I don't get it. So many positive reviews and all I can see are the holes in the fabric, not the cobweb weight knitted lace shawl this is supposed to be. (sorry, I'm a #knittersoflitsy, and have shawls on my mind. It's the season.)

so-soAn alright read that I didn‘t quite connect with. I think I was too old for this book, and I couldn‘t connect with the main conflict so never felt much excitement or drive to read this. But, I do think some people will really love the mix of magic and history! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

I absolutely loved this book! When the Gunpowder plot from 1605 gets a bit of magic, you get Fawkes!
I story about Thomas, who, in order to survive the plague, has to join his father's plot to kill the king of England.
They all have masks, and they can control colours.

panLike many other MCs, Thomas is an idealist, albeit an extremely honest with himself idealist. He admits to being a coward and many other things besides. This honesty made me like him all the more; although, he‘s definitely no hero. If he had tried to hide it, I would have scoffed and the story would have lost a little something for me. As it was, the story was slow moving and pretty boring in my view.

1. The theme of prejudice runs strong in this. The setting is 17th century London and prejudice exists against the plagued, Igniters, Keepers and those of coloured skin. The author has mirrored crucial issues of today in a novel set in the 1600s.
2. The magic system is VERY well done.
3. Impeccable character development. Thomas' journey to find truth is something we can all relate to
