To Sir Phillip, With Love
To Sir Phillip, With Love | Julia Quinn
Sir Phillip knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he'd proposed, figuring that she'd be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except . . . she wasn't. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her . . . and more.Did he think she was mad? Eloise Bridgerton couldn't marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking . . . and wondering . . . and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except . . . he wasn't. Her perfect husband wouldn't be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled . . . and when he kissed her . . . the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn't help but wonder . . . could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

I‘m going to give this a pick because I still enjoy the Bridgertons as a whole and love Eloise on the show (though she can be frustrating!), but if I had to pick one this would be my least favorite so far. It‘s not bad at all, just long with too much exposition for my taste and not enough action/dialogue. I do think Eloise and Phillip are a good couple and am interested to see how it plays out in the show. 3.5⭐️ #Bridgerton #audiobook #regency

I‘m obsessed with the Netflix series and can‘t wait for Eloise‘s season so I peeked ahead and read the book. I love the actresses portrayal of Eloise- she‘s so feisty and sassy. Her book does not disappoint. Now I‘ll have to binge the whole Bridgerton series!

I struggled a bit to follow Eloise's actions but I enjoyed her character arc.
The double standards on women irked me in this book more than in the others.

Spoiler warning!
Also I don't think it's okay to not mention once to have kids - that was so quickly brushed off... I understand why it's important for her character but I struggled a bit with that.

Nevertheless, again very amusing to read.

This was a bit of a different love story. Eloise and Sir Phillip write letters back and forth for about a year. Phillip says that perhaps he could arrange for a chaperone for Eloise to visit, and if they get along well enough, perhaps they could marry. Chaos (and love, of course) ensues from there. #SeriesLove2024 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

Ch 4 - in spite of the fact it's told from his POV (3rd person) I don't see anything positive about Philip. The only things we really know about him is that he's a bad father & wants a wife so he can absolve responsibility & escape to his greenhouse.
Ch 5 - starts with Eloise thinking he might be a good catch because of his looks. In spite of the fact she's turned down 6 perfectly good proposals because - we're not told.
Not looking promising.

humouress Ch 7 - Eloise is bored and I am bored. Contemplating hurling the book across the room - purely a figure of speech; I would never hurl a book, in any form (except metaphorically).
...
She's left London in haste in the middle of the night (why?), doesn't have a maid to help her dress but did have the presence of mind to pack a bathing costume (which would have been a cumbersome garment in Regency times - assuming that's when this took place?) 🙄
(edited) 6mo
humouress Ch 13 - Quinn takes the concept of ‘children should be seen and not heard‘ and mixes it with modern day concept of family units; even if you suspend disbelief the book is very confused. Philip is too involved for one and not involved enough for the other. Either way he can‘t wait to marry Eloise and palm them off on her. I don‘t see what she likes about him except that she‘s put herself (‼️) in a compromising situation & has to marry 6mo
humouress I was starting to wonder if/ why Quinn would satirise the genre that is her bread & butter 5mo

I didn't like this one as much. I liked Eloise but did not care for Phillip.
This one did not have as much build up as the others.
I did like that the male protagonist already had children. It was a nice change from the others.

Book 5, Eloise. Ploughing on with the series, no Booker Prize shortlist going on here 😆. Good fun as always, although this one didn‘t quite get away with the silliness as the others have - there were lots of red flags and it wasn‘t written so long ago that it shouldn‘t have dealt with pretty major mental health issues much better. Putting this one behind me and moving on…feeling a little irritable that my go-to comfort-read series let me down!

Waking up unexpectedly very early on a Sunday had its perks; I got to finish this book. From the moment I started Bridgerton (and watched the first season) I have loved Eloise. Her fierce independence in a regal world, making sure her voice and opinions were heard even though it wasn‘t always welcomed and making sure she fulfilled her goals before the journey into married life. I love this character, I loved that they stayed true to her.

still some have been read, I don't think at all that this comes up to the same level as the other books. I don't like the plot of the book at all and somehow I think there is too little tension and action. Of course, the book can be read, but it is not a favorite and it took a while to read it. I can‘t recommend the book to everyone, but if you read the entire series, you should of course not skip this one. The book is a solid 5/10 I would say.

Bridgerton #4. I wasn't as attached to Eloise as I've been to other characters so far so I wasn't sure how much I'd like this one. Plus it started a but slower. Much more melancholy. But it ended on a high and got me all caught up in the story just like the others. #77-2022

Halfway through the Bridgerton books!! This is probably the only series where I can honestly say I like the show better than the books. I‘m super interested to see how they spin this one. I honestly struggled to like Phillip for most of this book. To Julia‘s defense, she writes a man perfectly lol.

Scochrane26 I‘m wondering if they‘re going to change the story on the show. They seemed to be developing something with the printer guy. 2y
BooksNBowls @Scochrane26 i think they only did that for the Lady W storyline. They may change it, who knows tho. And the next season is Colin and Penelope‘s story and it was 8 years in the future. Soo I‘m interested to see if they are going to keep the original timeline because Eloise and Pen were both considered “spinsters” at the time of their weddings. Seems weird they skip Benedict when the next storyline is supposed to be 8 years later… 🤔 2y
Chrissyreadit I‘m listening to this one now and also not a huge fan of Sir Phillip 2y

This wasn't my favorite Bridgerton, mainly because the first half lacks Bridgertons - what I enjoy about this series is the siblings en masse, & at first we only have Eloise. I felt like the resolution w/ Phillip's children was somewhat rushed, but overall this was some fun fluff w/ sizzle.

TheAromaofBooks @melmes - I'm not sure that it's really worth the hype per se. It's perfectly fun with likable characters, but I haven't fallen in absolute love with these books. They're enjoyable, but not a series I see myself rereading. And they're nowhere near as funny as most Georgette Heyer!! Enjoyable and entertaining, but I think the Netflix series is definitely giving them more hype than they would normally get. 3y

Vansa Yup. THis book was a bit...strange. Eloise, who wants to take matters into her own hands-why did she fall in love with Philip? I would have liked more of their letters to be included. 3y
swishandflick @Vansa totally agree! I feel like it was a strange choice to have excerpts of Eloise's letters to random family members at the top of each chapter, rather than from her correspondence with Phillip. 3y

I love that Eloise found a man worthy of her. The hints of him in previous books had me worried. I missed the scandal sheet which surprised me. A fun read and I had a hard time putting the book down.

FeatherV This one was sooo good! I'm glad you enjoyed it too! I totally missed the scandal sheets thought :( 3y
Mshookquilts @FeatherV yeah, the scandal sheets just add something the letter excerpts can‘t fill. I‘m still waiting for my last Christmas book 🙄. Delivery date has changed at least twice & it‘s still overdue from the last date on a 7-day window for the last one. 😤. Anyway, starting “when he was wicked” because I don‘t want to be in the middle of the nearly 500 page one Papa gave me for Christmas if the other one ever arrives. 3y

After a letter of condolence from Eloise sparks his interest, a year long correspondence is started. When the subject of marriage is brought up, Eloise, a 28 year old spinster, is intrigued. A great vacation read for my first trip in over a year! I was a plane within 48 hours of being fully vaccinated and it was desperately needed after a few brutal months at work. Feeling lucky to have been able to get some sun in Miami, to have gotten both shots, and to have made it through the last year. I‘m so glad this book seemed to start at the beginning of the book rather than half way through. I really loved these two as a couple. My only complaint was that because Eloise ran off before Penelope‘s big reveal in the previous book, we didn‘t get to see her reaction to it and when he brothers arrived to see her none of them thought to tell her either! I loved both characters arcs, and they are both better for being together!
