Summer Wives
Summer Wives | Beatriz Williams
"The Summer Wives is an exquisitely rendered novel that tackles two of my favorite topics: love and money. The glorious setting and drama are enriched by Williams's signature vintage touch. It's at the top of my picks for the beach this summer."--Elin Hilderbrand, author of The Perfect Couple New York Times bestselling author Beatriz Williams brings us the blockbuster novel of the season--an electrifying postwar fable of love, class, power, and redemption set among the inhabitants of an island off the New England coast . . .In the summer of 1951, Miranda Schuyler arrives on elite, secretive Winthrop Island as a schoolgirl from the margins of high society, still reeling from the loss of her father in the Second World War. When her beautiful mother marries Hugh Fisher, whose summer house on Winthrop overlooks the famous lighthouse, Miranda's catapulted into a heady new world of pedigrees and cocktails, status and swimming pools. Isobel Fisher, Miranda's new stepsister--all long legs and world-weary bravado, engaged to a wealthy Island scion--is eager to draw Miranda into the arcane customs of Winthrop society. But beneath the island's patrician surface, there are really two clans: the summer families with their steadfast ways and quiet obsessions, and the working class of Portuguese fishermen and domestic workers who earn their living on the water and in the laundries of the summer houses. Uneasy among Isobel's privileged friends, Miranda finds herself drawn to Joseph Vargas, whose father keeps the lighthouse with his mysterious wife. In summer, Joseph helps his father in the lobster boats, but in the autumn he returns to Brown University, where he's determined to make something of himself. Since childhood, Joseph's enjoyed an intense, complex friendship with Isobel Fisher, and as the summer winds to its end, Miranda's caught in a catastrophe that will shatter Winthrop's hard-won tranquility and banish Miranda from the island for nearly two decades. Now, in the landmark summer of 1969, Miranda returns at last, as a renowned Shakespearean actress hiding a terrible heartbreak. On its surface, the Island remains the same--determined to keep the outside world from its shores, fiercely loyal to those who belong. But the formerly powerful Fisher family is a shadow of itself, and Joseph Vargas has recently escaped the prison where he was incarcerated for the murder of Miranda's stepfather eighteen years earlier. What's more, Miranda herself is no longer a nave teenager, and she begins a fierce, inexorable quest for justice for the man she once loved . . . even if it means uncovering every last one of the secrets that bind together the families of Winthrop Island.

This book is nsfw/ nsfm.Mom‘s library friend fucking lied to us about it being a good book. I am pissed at my mon‘s friend and I am getting a refund on this book. Hugh is an evil pervert and I refuse to finish this book, but I hope she gets revenge on him. It is extremely frustrating how many pornography “romance fiction” books I have had the misfortune to read. I‘m not finishing this. Don‘t buy this pornography book!

This is my first time reading a novel by Beatriz Williams. I have come to love historical fiction novels in the past few years and her books have piqued my interest, so I decided it was time to give her a try. I absolutely loved The Summer Wives! This novel has so much depth and intrigue. I didn‘t want to stop listening as I wanted to know how all of the pieces to the puzzle fit, and I didn‘t want it to end.

Finished my first Beatriz Williams book! I always forget how much I actually like historical fiction. I stayed up late last night to finish because I only had like 20 pages left and needed to see how the story ended.

I guessed the “secret” pretty early one. I don‘t know how much of a secret it was actually supposed to be though. I‘ll definitely read her again though.

Thanks for the book @BibliOHIOphile ! #LitsyLove

marleed I‘ve now read 3 or 4 of her books and none in of publishing sequence. It took 3 books for me to realize the Schuyler family is a theme in her books and I kind of want an ancestry chart for her books to see how one is influenced by another! 3y
Laughterhp @marleed Haha oh really? I did see on goodreads that there was a “Schuyler‘s sisters 2”. I‘ll have to look up her other books. I‘m going to start The Golden Hour soon. I guess I need a HF fix. 3y

Nicely intersectionally (told during 1930, 1931, 1951 and 1969) written novel about a young girl who visits Winthrop Island for the summer due to her mother‘s impending marriage, meets a boy and falls in love. Tragedy occurs, she leaves and he‘s arrested. Drama ensues

This book sat atop by TBR for months last summer but I never seemed to grab it. Finally, with thanks to #BookSpinBonanza, its a done deal. ...It was slow going at first but then the whole summer wives thing took shape and it was fun to read the crooked path to its end. ...And then I googled Fishers Island NY. My Google history because of books would surely baffle investigators!

It may just be me, but I have lived in three different locations in England and don‘t think I have ever really heard the term smash used. The regular word I would use and hear people using is an accident.
