I had never heard of this book before finding it at a used bookstore, but, man…what an interesting, original book! I really enjoyed the story and the writing. Not to mention, it‘s preeettyyyy.

Bk9 of January2022 & #JumpStart2022 is done too! This pretty little hardcover has been on my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom since it was released in 2018🤭So glad I finally read it, it was a lot darker than I was expecting. A female line of witches on an island in the Salish Sea learn that the price of using dark magic is blood & pain. Pitting mother against daughter it‘s very grim but also beautifully written. #BookspinBingo #Pop22 #BeatTheBacklist2022👇
Most of the houses, while well kept, looked as though they had been built a century ago, with lacy peaked roofs and pointed windows and doors like those of a cathedral. Equal parts sparse and elaborate, the houses bought to mind a gingerbread house. The kind of house a witch might live in.
Picked up The Price Guide to the Occult from the library today after finishing Girl in the Blue Coat last night!
Will be getting some reading of this one in tonight. 👌🏻👌🏻
I think this book deserves more love. It was a quick, atmospheric read that got pretty damn dark and gorey (trigger warning for self harm). I loved the setting and characters and the ending opened up some fascinating opportunities for a sequel...I would say that the pacing was off and it seemed rushed...the major tension didn't happen until about 60% in but then it happened all at once. Overall, very entertaining and I look forward to the sequel
This one is giving me Practical Magic vibes! Love it so far.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5
I really liked the atmosphere of this one and the interesting cast of characters, but the ending felt messy/rushed.
It reminded me of The Wicked Deep a little (I liked this one better though)

Leslye Walton‘s YA fantasy novel has some great ideas and vivid and bleak imagery but the plot is filled with holes while characterisation beyond Nor is essentially non-existent. Although self-harm forms a major theme in the book, I didn‘t buy into Nor‘s psychological state and the inevitable YA love triangle between Nor, Reed and Gage is half-hearted and fails to sizzle. The book ends with the set-up for a sequel but I‘m not sure I‘d read on.
#16 of my year and this one is so beautiful. The edges are sprayed red and the cover is soft and I‘m loving the yellow. Chugging coffee in my Kurt Vonnegut mug makes for a perfect start to any day.
I loved this book! It checked a lot of boxes. Witches? Check. Atmospheric Pacific Northwest setting? Yup. Queer grandmas? Yes. Curses? Definitely. A tiny smidge of romance? You betcha. Dark magic? Check. This story was really engaging, deep, and magical. There were some really neat ways the author described the way magic worked. There were also great themes about accepting yourself and surviving the bad days.
TW: self harm/cutting
I started The Price Guide to the Occult today, and I'm loving it and its witchy vibes so far. Plus, the cover is absolutely gorgeous!
The cover on this is absolutely beautiful, one of my favourites ever! The theme to this book (more witchcraft 🧙♀️) is right up my street, I loved the beautiful setting and the use of nature but not so sure on the ending. This makes a really nice companion piece to The Wicked Deep!

@CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian would you like to join in and post a cover you love every day?
really enjoyed nor as a character. liked the book. the DRAMATIC SCENE was a bit anticlimactic. but other than that. i liked it. hope there‘s a sequel or otherwise that arch is a shame. really, really, really liked the tone of the epilogue.
I‘ve been on a business trip this week but I came home to a lovely birthday gift. Thanks @FantasyChick ! #PoutinePenPals
Do you have a preference between hardbacks and paperbacks?
I‘ve probably read more paperbacks... but I‘m not sure that equals a preference 😂
Enjoying a bit of reading while my kiddos get their minutes in for Summer Reading Programs.
I loved this so much... It was so atmospheric and creepy in places and heartwarming in others. Also a really quick read which i desperately needed at the time!
Several generations of women on a small island off the coast of Washington are witches with varying powers. Things get interesting when one deviates from the path. This was a fun, quick listen.

As a huge fan of her previous book Eva Lavender, I was looking forward to this and it delivered with beautiful writing and thick atmosphere. This one is more obvious/real with the magic but darker - with deep family issues, violence. Was a very interesting treatment of a MC who self harms, portrayed excellently from her point of view. Climactic action goes over-the-top—but for this gorgeous writing, I can forgive slight annoyances plot wise.
Genuinely enjoyed this one more than Ava Lavender. Still a very atmospheric and beautifully written book with amazing family ties.
However, unlike Ava Lavender, Price Guide felt more consistent plot wise, and I preferred Nor as a MC.
Didn‘t find it too good but I liked the magic aspect of the mother and daughter battle. They hate each other. The mother is more evil and the daughter is goodness.
Hi everyone! How's everyone day so far? This was a fun fast read. It's the perfect story to read in October. It wasn't my favorite book. It still was very interesting to read. This story is about a family of witches. The main character mom is a evil witch. The family have a curse. No men will ever love them back. The mother uses black magic to try fix the curse. Nothing will stop her. #litsy #kindle #kindlefire #paperwhite #library #bookgeek
Hi everyone! I hope your having a good night. I'm reading The Price Guide to the Occult. I'm enjoying it so far. A perfect read for October. #litsy #kindle #kindlefire #paperwhite #library
I won‘t lie, this was mostly a cover buy. Can you blame me? Look how pretty! The red bits are all metallic and they shine every time they catch the light. 😍
@emmaturi was with me when I grabbed it and she looked puzzled at my impulse buy but didn‘t try to talk me out of it, for which I‘m grateful because this sounds interesting!! 😊
The writing and the atmosphere are everything in this book. I would‘ve like more plot and think the love triangle felt shallow. Lush and flawed.
It was cute, not great, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. It kind of reminded me of Practical Magic (the movie more so t the book) for teens. However, where the book really shines is in its accurate, tactful, and respectful portrayal of a young woman struggling with self harm. It neither glorifies not vilifies the problem, but for those struggling, it may offer a much needed lifeline; knowing they are not alone, and that help is available.
The Sunday vibes continue with tea cakes from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you for picking me this as my first #makemereadit Im really enjoying the book. The setting is very west coast @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I think you‘d enjoy it too.
Very atmospheric, but lacking in plot or character development. This story tried to survive on the merit of its writing alone, which admittedly was lovely. However, pretty words can only do so much for a mediocre story.
I read this and immediately went “Awwww!” So corny, but so cute. This book is for my “magic” space in the summer book challenge.
I totally chose this book because of the way it looks. So cool! I liked the story but I loved the aesthetic.
To binge watch something on Netflix...or start one of these because they need to go back soon...decisions decisions.
Picked this book up while I was browsing the shelves and so far it‘s really good!
YA novel about a girl coming into her witchy powers 🧙♀️🔮
#BookMail No4 is this beautiful edition of Leslye Walton, the author of another gorgeous book, The Strange And Beautiful Sorrows Of Ava Lavender. It‘s a casebound, stained edged, glorious piece of literature. It‘s so pretty🤩 Oh, the story sounds good too☺️It‘s about a girl, born to a witch family in the Pacific Northwest who tries to ignore her talents & lead a “normal” life. Until a book turns up that claims to cast any spell for the right price.
SPOILER-ish. I loved this book. I had a hard time putting it down. However, there is very vivid, very descriptive talk of self harm and harm in general. I figured out, at least for me, that this book is one giant, messy, scary, beautiful, horrifying and uplifting metaphor for mental illness. If you are sensitive to this, buyer beware. The last 30 pages had me in floods of tears, and I don't cry while reading. And the ending is satisfyingly vague.
Well that was anti-climactic. This never really got its feet under it. I didn't feel like I knew the characters at all. The ending was abrupt. Frankly my favorite character is the main's best friend. She had much more of a personality.
Just started this yesterday and already in love. I adored Leslye's previous book (the strange and beautiful sorrows of ava lavender) and could bot wait to pick this one up. Small trigger warning for talk of self harm in the 1st chapter, but it's minimal. If you're sensitive to that type of talk, just wanted to make you aware. I'm loving it so far.
🌟🌟🌟.5/5
This was a good quick read! Witches, Curses, Frienships, Love Triangle, Complicated Mother Daughter Relationships....its got a bit of everything.

I had high hopes for this one because I love books with witches but it sucked big time (for me anyway lol). I hated the main character and it felt like there was very little growth; she basically does nothing. The plot was meh and I didn't care for the outcome at all. The only thing I found interesting was the prologue lol. It was all downhill from there 🙈
I was so excited to get a galley copy of this book! It did not disappoint! I love stories about magic that are just creepy enough that I can still go to sleep after reading, lol! If you love witchy, kinda YAish books...I recommend it. Oh and I "borrowed" this image, is that ok on here, or no?
