In the vein of Big Little Lies and Reconstructing Amelia comes an emotionally charged domestic suspense novel about a mother unraveling the truth behind how her daughter became brain dead. And pregnant. A search for the truth. A lifetime of lies. In the small hours of the morning, Abi Knight is startled awake by the phone call no mother ever wants to get: her teenage daughter Olivia has fallen off a bridge. Not only is Olivia brain dead, shes pregnant and must remain on life support to keep her baby alive. And then Abi sees the angry bruises circling Olivias wrists. When the police unexpectedly rule Olivias fall an accident, Abi decides to find out what really happened that night. Heartbroken and grieving, she unravels the threads of her daughters life. Was Olivias fall an accident? Or something far more sinister? Christina McDonald weaves a suspenseful and heartwrenching tale of hidden relationships, devastating lies, and the power of a mothers love. With flashbacks of Olivias own resolve to uncover family secrets, this taut and emotional novel asks: how well do you know your children? And how well do they know you?

Thank you so much Holly! The books are awesome and I love the card!! Did you do the cross stitch? Such a sweet surprise!

This was a good, but somewhat predictable story with a great ending. The story wasn‘t brilliant, but it was compelling and well written. The characters were relatable and the relationships rang true. Then there was the ending..... oh the ending. It was written with such tenderness and provided a glimpse into the profound love between a mother and daughter. I was in tears 😭

Eggs I agree with your review and am still glad I read it💗 The conclusion was 😭 3w

OriginalCyn620 It wasn‘t anything groundbreaking for the genre but it was very well done. 3w
Hooked_on_books I thought it was good, but Reconstructing Amelia, which has some similarities, is better. 3w
thereadingowlvina I enjoyed the plot and twist. It was well done. Above all I resonate strongly with Abi - single mother (although I remarried now) & I discovered my mom's suicide 11 years ago. So, I can relate to the trauma Abi experienced & her worries as a single mom. 3w
sblbooks @Hooked_on_books I've added Reconstructing Amelia to my TBR. 3w

megnews I‘m not new to this genre but I haven‘t read a mystery in a long time. They were getting too formulaic for me. I really tend to stick to history with a little memoir thrown in and I‘m pretty happy with that. Still, I appreciated pushing beyond those limits and enjoyed this book and really enjoyed reading with the group. (edited) 3w
OriginalCyn620 Not new to the genre but I loved this one! The author did a great job of casting doubt over many characters so that it kept me guessing. There‘s not really an aspect that I didn‘t enjoy. 3w
CoffeeNBooks I like mysteries, but I like that this one was a little different than most I've read in that it also had the additional stories of friendship, love, and family. The stories of Derek, Abbi & Anthony, and Abbi's relationship with her sister made it a more well-rounded story than mysterious sometimes are. 3w
See All 7 Comments
megnews I agree with @CoffeeNBooks. I find many mysteries might have a romance component for added tension to the story but you don‘t often see these types of familial, loving relationships. I enjoyed that aspect for sure and really hurt for Abbi losing Olivia. 3w
Hooked_on_books I love mysteries. I liked this one but there were aspects that bothered me. I didn‘t like that she didn‘t question the note pushed under her door. She just believed it without question and I thought that‘s was unrealistic since she didn‘t know where it came from. Also, the medical stuff at the end had some major errors that took me out of the story a bit. 3w
thereadingowlvina I love murder mysteries but I usually read historical murder mysteries. Thought I'd give this one a try and I'm glad I did! This book exceeded my expectations. I will definitely be reading this author's other books 😊 3w
sblbooks @megnews @OriginalCyn620 @CoffeeNBooks @Hooked_on_books @thereadingowlvina I've only been listening to psychological thrillers/suspense novels for a couple of years. This is one of the best ones. I saw a review that said it was too much like a Hallmark Channel movie, I disagree since I love Hallmark movies. I thought it was a nice change to actually care about the characters in the end. 3w

megnews I did suspect Tyler but I suspected almost everyone. I can‘t remember the best friends name anymore but I suspected her and her mom and Olivia‘s dad and his daughter. 3w
OriginalCyn620 I suspected pretty much everyone throughout, but never really paid much attention to Tyler. 3w
CoffeeNBooks @megnews @OriginalCyn620 Same! It didn't occur to me to suspect Tyler. 3w
See All 7 Comments
EH2018 I though Tyler, then a couple others, but I thought Tyler could have been the stalker because of how upset he was about his parents breakup. I did not guess how it all went down though 3w
Hooked_on_books I thought the author did a good job of setting up a lot of potential suspects. I wasn‘t surprised that it was Tyler, but I wouldn‘t have been surprised if it was a number of people. 3w
thereadingowlvina I did not suspect Tyler at all! I thought it would be Olivia's dad or/and his daughter. That's why I enjoyed the twist in this book! 3w
sblbooks @megnews @OriginalCyn620 @CoffeeNBooks @EH2018 @Hooked_on_books @thereadingowlvina my number one suspect was Madison, number to Gavin. Tyler came in at number three. I agree the author did an excellent job, keeping us in suspense. 3w

megnews Sadly I think they often are mutually exclusive though of course not always. I want both! 3w
OriginalCyn620 More times than not I think they are mutually exclusive. In the end, I think I‘d want truth, and if it brings unhappiness, hopefully I could find a way past it. 3w
EH2018 Yes, though not always. Its a tough choice, but I too think truth 3w
See All 8 Comments
Hooked_on_books I think they can be mutually exclusive but are certainly not always. I think if you are lucky enough to have people around you who do not broadly betray you, then you can have both. I think to suggest they are definitively mutually exclusive is pretty jaded. 3w
thereadingowlvina I'll pick truth any day! 3w
sblbooks @megnews @OriginalCyn620 @EH2018 @Hooked_on_books @thereadingowlvina When I was younger I was just like Olivia: truth no matter what. That has changed a little bit as I've aged. There's been a few times I wish I didn't know the truth, after the fact. 3w
jpellet I‘m not sure which I would choose, but I think it would depend on the situation! I usually would choose the truth, but I think there are times that the truth does no good, and it would be better to be in oblivion. 3w

OriginalCyn620 I just think it‘s a good representation of how mothers and daughters never really know everything about the other. They can be close and get along, but for their own reasons, neither shares everything about themselves. It‘s certainly true of my mom and me, and I‘d bet the farm it‘s true of my and my teen daughter! 3w
CoffeeNBooks @OriginalCyn620 I definitely agree! Olivia definitely didn't often understand Abbi's reasons for the decisions she made to protect Olivia. I thought it was interesting to see Olivia's perspective of that change after she learned about her mom and Gavin. 3w
megnews @OriginalCyn620 I agree. I often think how much I don‘t know about my mom that she won‘t share. And I know it‘s hard for my children to understand the protecting I do without knowing me better than kids are interested in at the this age. It was interesting to get inside each person‘s head and see what they truly thought and felt under what they presented to each other. 3w
See All 7 Comments
EH2018 Olivia, though a child, seems more perceptive than Abbi. They both try to protect each other and these shields distance them 3w
Hooked_on_books I thought it was pretty accurate for the depiction of a teen—what they‘ll share vs what they‘ll hide. I was heartbroken for Abi with Olivia‘s reveal of her feelings about things, but it was understandable given Abi‘s wide overcompensation in trying to protect her daughter and instead smothering her. 3w
sblbooks @OriginalCyn620 @CoffeeNBooks @megnews @EH2018 @Hooked_on_books agreed, I think it's very common that mothers and daughters hide things from each other. We all have our secrets and reasons for wanting to shield them from the truth. I too is glad to see that in the end, Olivia understood why her mother was so overprotective. 3w
jpellet They both looked out for each other in their own way. Abi with her overprotective nature, and Olivia attempting to please her mom and avoid upsetting her at times! 3w

megnews I did. I generally do like that setup unless there‘s way too many telling the story. Sometimes I felt like a ghost was telling her story during Olivia‘s. There were a couple times I felt like I was reading young adult fiction when reading Olivia‘s as well. But I didn‘t mind at all because I like ya fiction. 3w
OriginalCyn620 I did. I personally love alternating POVs. And, of course, with Olivia being brain dead, it was necessary. It was well done in this case! 3w
CoffeeNBooks Yes, I really like stories with alternating POVs- it seems to add so much depth to a story that you might not get otherwise. I definitely thought it was interesting being able to find out Olivia's perspective in this way. 3w
See All 8 Comments
EH2018 I love multiple POV novels. It makes it so much more interesting to me 3w
Hooked_on_books I liked the structure as well. When it‘s done well, and it is here, I like what you learn from each story line, perspective, and point in time. It enriched the story. 3w
thereadingowlvina Oh yes, I liked the multiple POVs and it was done nicely in this book. Multiple POVs most of the time give readers a better understanding of each character 😊 3w
sblbooks @megnews @OriginalCyn620 @CoffeeNBooks @EH2018 @Hooked_on_books @thereadingowlvina I enjoy multiple points of view, most of the time. If there's more than 4 that can get a little bit confusing. In this case, it was very well done. Like Cindy pointed out, it was necessary since Olivia was not conscious. 3w
jpellet I also liked the structure! Like others have said, it was a manageable number of viewpoints. I also liked how the story unfolded by using these multiple perspectives. 3w

The #OliviaBuddyRead discussion starts now. Comment anytime between now and the end of the month. I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say. @megnews @SaturnDoo @OriginalCyn620 @thereadingowlvina @Hooked_on_books @jpellet @CBee @CoffeeNBooks and anyone else who would like to join in.

CoffeeNBooks This was such a great book!! I'm never very good at guessing who the culprit is, so I definitely didn't guess Tyler. I thought Kendall or Gavin. I felt so bad for Derrick and Abbi, and glad that Abbi was able to break down some of the walls she'd put up over the years and allow Anthony into her life. I'm glad we read this book- it wasn't one I necessarily would have known about or read otherwise. 3w
OriginalCyn620 I loved this book! It was even better than I thought it would be. I too am complete crap at guessing culprits, and this book was no different. Of course, Gavin would have been the obvious choice, but I figured it wasn‘t for that very reason. A good portion of the book, I suspected Anthony, thinking he wasn‘t who he said he was and had some kind of connection to Olivia. I never gave Tyler much thought! I loved the ending too! 3w

After her teenage daughter Olivia falls from a bridge and ends up brain-dead, Abigail is desperate to understand what happened. Overall a solid, enjoyable mystery, but I did have a couple of small issues with it. The medical scene at the end was not realistic, which pulled me out of the story, and comments like “skin toned folders” just don‘t belong in books in 2019. #oliviabuddyread

There are several characters I like, and a few I don't. I will pick Anthony ,He just seems to be such a great guy, not many men would care for their mother with Alzheimer's. I love how supportive he is. He is the only one trying to find out what really happened to Olivia.

This was a mystery, but also a story of family and love. I thought it started a little slow, but about 40% into it I didn‘t want to put it down. I thought the author did a good job with showing the mother daughter relationship, and she kept me guessing throughout the entire book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
