A searing poetic memoir and call to action from the bestselling and award-winning author of Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson! Bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson is known for the unflinching way she writes about, and advocates for, survivors of sexual assault. Now, inspired by her fans and enraged by how little in our culture has changed since her groundbreaking novel Speak was first published twenty years ago, she has written a poetry memoir that is as vulnerable as it is rallying, as timely as it is timeless. In free verse, Anderson shares reflections, rants, and calls to action woven between deeply personal stories from her life that she's never written about before. Searing and soul-searching, this important memoir is a denouncement of our society's failures and a love letter to all the people with the courage to say #MeToo and #TimesUp, whether aloud, online, or only in their own hearts. Shout speaks truth to power in a loud, clear voice-- and once you hear it, it is impossible to ignore.

This memoir told through poems had some quotes that really resonated with me. Overall, the book made me feel so uncomfortable, which considering the subject matter, it should, that it ultimately brought down my rating. Ireserve 5 stars for books I want to reread, and I never want to touch this book again. I'm glad that Anderson continues to share her voice, and I recommend this to fans of The Poet X.

These twelve are my top picks from August. I know the covers are kind of blurry. I will use the comments to list them; that will also make it easier for me to figure out which ones I haven‘t yet reviewed. Let me know which of these you‘ve also enjoyed. 😊

A powerful and inspiring memoir in #verse, “This is the story of a girl who lost her voice and wrote herself a new one.” Anderson reveals the autobiographical sources to her most famous novel, Speak, as well as the sparks that ignited the creation of her other books. She writes movingly about her interactions with thousands of her readers. I also learned how to pronounce her name: “Halse rhymes with waltz/ watch me dance/ and don‘t forget it.”

Kin unpinned, my mother
was 100 percent wool, unprocessed
and itchy as hell, a hair shirt unraveled
then rerolled like razor wire
—carefully—
into a porcupine abristle
with resentment,
protecting her underbelly
resisting all attempts to untangle
her complications.

That‘s the story I am dying
to knit together,
if only I could find
the pattern.

Lindy @saresmoore These are excerpts from one of her longer poems. It brought tears to my eyes too. Anderson has encountered so many boys who don‘t understand why Melinda was so upset by what happened to her in Speak. 3mo

“in Ballarat,
good neighbours make loud fences
the language of love made visible”

This memoir sent me to the internet for more information about Loud Fence and the Australian movement to remind people who have experienced sexual violence “that they are important and supported and good.”

Leslie promised she‘d read me the books
so I didn‘t have to be afraid of mistakes
and I wrote My Name in big letters
got my first badge, a library card
I asked the librarian
“Can I take out all the books?”
and she answered quite seriously
“Of course, dear,
just not at the same time.”

Lindy Note: photo was taken at my local library, which my library app helpfully informs me is currently 1544.3 km away from my current location (on my sister‘s farm in the Yukon). 3mo
Reggie What‘s the latest chore she‘s had you do? Are you bailing hay yet? 3mo
Lindy @Reggie Hay cutting—the final 10 acres that didn‘t get done in July because the mower blade broke—will probably happen tomorrow; it‘s been too wet since the mower got fixed. I leave today, so no haying for me. Latest chore was a pleasure: we picked 12 pounds of black currants. 3mo

Met and exceeded my step goal even though we are STILL away visiting family and it's hotter than blazes. Also, finished three books this week bringing my total to 7 of the 6 I had planned on reading during the 6 weeks. I still have two more weeks to read!

I loved this poetic memoir from the author of Speak. She shares her difficult childhood and in doing so exposes her parents inadequacies. She goes on to prove her father's advice, “...we must be gentle with the living, but the dead own their truth and are fearless.” Themes reveal truths of rape/sexual assault, classism, poverty, addiction, trauma and triumph.

For my first book of #24in48 I went for short but devastating. I did not love the first half as much as the second but tears were definitely shed while reading this.

RebL I just listened to the Overdue podcast on this one. I forgot about a lot of the truly high school stuff in it like the cheerleaders‘ Hornet cheer. 4mo

I highly recommend this memoir in verse. It is beautifully written, and the story and the insights made me feel that this is one I could read over and over to learn from. Laurie Halse Anderson discusses her young life, suffering after being raped and finding herself again. She also shares the inspirations behind her books and writing life, fighting censors and helping others.

I really connected with the first few poems in this, but by halfway through (the audio version) I was just finding everything repetitive and her voice wasn't holding my interest.
