Stay Sexy & Dont Get Murdered
Stay Sexy & Dont Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide | Karen Kilgariff, Georgia Hardstark
120 posts | 92 read | 2 reading | 79 to read
The highly anticipated first book by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, the voices behind the #1 hit podcast My Favorite Murder! Sharing never-before-heard stories ranging from their struggles with depression, eating disorders, and addiction, Karen and Georgia irreverently recount their biggest mistakes and deepest fears, reflecting on the formative life events that shaped them into two of the most followed voices in the nation. In Stay Sexy & Dont Get Murdered, Karen and Georgia focus on the importance of self-advocating and valuing personal safety over being nice or helpful. They delve into their own pasts, true crime stories, and beyond to discuss meaningful cultural and societal issues with fierce empathy and unapologetic frankness. My Favorite Murder started as a way for Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark to work through their fears. Now its a worldwide community.... Even its darkest moments are lightened by Karen and Georgia's effortlessly funny banter and genuine empathy. So different from what I thought it would be! It wasn‘t the same tone as their podcast, which can be quite snarky (not knocking that!). I found this audiobook to be very heartwarming, thoughtful, and truthful. On top of everything Karen and Georgia are always, always grateful. I very much recommend the audiobook for all the Murderinos out there! 💜🎧 #NonfictionNovember

Here are the books at which I hope to chip away during the #MrBook1inaMillion extravaganza. The tagged book is my audio choice for this #Readathon. My kids/schedule/way of life have me reading in little bits here and there rather than in big chunks so I usually just estimate my reading time, but I might play with keeping a timer this time, just for kicks. 😉

#24B4Monday #LitsyPartyofOne

veritysalter I‘ve read Horrorstör - it‘s a fabulous horror farce and SSDGM was good, although I misunderstood and thought it was about true crime, not a biography (although still interesting to learn more about K&G). Happy reading ♥️ 1mo
ImperfectCJ @veritysalter Thanks for the tips! I tried Horrostör a couple of years ago and couldn't get into it, but I read a couple of reviews recently that made me want to try it again. As far as Stay Sexy goes, I have mixed feelings about the podcast and about memoirs in general, but the reviews have left me curious. I guess we'll see how it goes! 1mo

I tried many moons ago to listen to their podcast, but I was not in the right mindset to pick up something new at that time. This book gives a peak into the histories and the minds behind the women who love true crime almost as much as my mother (something I find myself falling in love with, too).

Okay so this isn‘t actually a book about murders (well, there‘s two in there but they‘re not the main point). However, it does have some great life advice from two women who have lived through some *stuff*. I really liked the advice they gave and the personal stories. There are definitely some quotes that will stick with me forever, so thank you Karen and Georgia. And as always STAY SEXY, AND DON‘T! GET! MURDERED!!

Love me some Karen and Georgia! Their generous displays of vulnerability through their emotionally sincere anecdotes and their candid advice were charming, refreshing, and showed a genuine appreciation of and concern for their dedicated MFM podcast audience. Lots of self-awareness, lots of desire to learn, improve, and share that growth.

This was an enjoyable read (audiobook) and it was filled with interesting stories to hold my attention. What I didn‘t realize was that this book is not a novel, its not one suspenseful murder; it‘s a collection of thoughts & life lessons from the authors, with murder mysteries along the way. The authors talk about feminism in relation to our current lives and how it relates to murders of the past, which as a radical feminist, I‘m all about.

I devoured this co-memoir in a little over a day! It wasn‘t what I expected (more about their podcasting/love of true crime), but I enjoyed hearing more about their histories and journeys...and appreciated the little kicks in the ass delivered along the way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Patchshank I liked it as well. I hope they co-author more books together. I think everyone wants them to write a true crime book. They more than enough knowledge and doing the podcast for so long I'm sure they have the research skills to do so. 4mo

I became a fan of My Favorite Murder late in the game (mostly out of trepidation that I wouldn't be able to handle serial killers), but their combination of mystery, comedy, and friendship is perfect. This book captures all the bits of wisdom that fans of the show adore.

This is my all-time favorite podcast and I could not WAIT to get my hands on the book once I heard about it. In fact I bought the book but also wanted to listen to Karen and Georgia read it just because they are so funny and awesome. I was surprised to find myself tearing up along with Karen during some of her portions and was touched by how honest and forthcoming they were. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys the podcast! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This book was nothing like what I expected when I initially stacked it, but for different reasons I liked it just as much as anticipated. I listened to the audio and felt like I was lunching on my own, completely engrossed in the conversation at a booth separated only by one of those flimsy plastic wavy boards. My takeaway... Follow your dreams, even if you have to quit your day job. Just, pay for your own stuff!

When I heard about this book, I didn‘t pay attention to what is was about, just wanted to read it because I love the podcast. After the 2nd chapter I sat back & went huh, it‘s not about murder, it‘s a self help book. I loved that their writing was just as they talk on the podcast with “fuck politeness”, so I continued reading. I fell in love with this book & they actually gave me the knowledge to seek answers I didn‘t know I was missing.

I‘m a big fan of the MFM podcast and I love non-fiction/memoir/celebrity memoirs so it was no surprise that I loved this book! I feel like we heard a little more from Georgia than Karen this time around so I could have used more Karen stories, but otherwise it was great! If you‘re looking for just another podcast episode, this isn‘t it. They dive deeper into their stories and life lessons, but it‘s so worth the read! 🖤

TamTracy Love the podcast so I expected a lot from the books. I thought my expectations were too high and I was going to hate it. I was SO wrong. I ♥️ it! 4mo

Loved It! Lots of parts made me tear up! Especially when Karen talks about her mom having dementia and when Georgia talks about her struggles with anxiety. They also give so much respect to Michelle McNamara and the book makes me feel like less of a freak about a lot of things honestly. Highly recommend!

My 3rd and final book finished for #24B4Monday is one that brings me so much joy. I‘ve listened to MFM since episode 4, so it‘s safe to say I‘m a fan (murderino). I haven‘t listened to any of the recent ones since I am trying to take a break from murder. So, reading this felt like catching up with old friends. I cried, I laughed and I reminisced. Great way to end my weekend! #ssdgm

Not sure I‘m the best person to review this book given I‘ve never listened to ”My Favorite Murder.” I also thought this book‘s content would contain more about serial killers than self-help advice. All in all, it was entertaining, and I‘ll likely given Georgia & Karen‘s podcast a listen. 💁🏻‍♀️

So...I don‘t listen to their podcast and I totally missed this was a self help book. I was expecting true crime. Since I‘m not already invested via the podcast, it‘s a book by two gals with mental illnesses talking about their lives and how they got here. It has some tips but they repeat they aren‘t trained in anyway to give the advice they give. I think you might have to be a fan to care about this book. #readwomen #audiobook #librarybook

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This essay collection is about the authors‘ lives rather than their podcast and it‘s content. It‘s part dual memoir; part self-help book. From a marketing standpoint the title makes sense, and I know it‘s their famous tagline, but it doesn‘t quite fit the book‘s purpose, IMO. I‘m being hypercritical. It was entertaining regardless. 👇🏻

britt_brooke I listened to My Favorite Murder today for the first time, just before finishing this book. I‘ll probably listen again once in a while, but I can only take so much true crime. I liked the humorous slant, though, even if at times it‘s seem totally inappropriate. (edited) 5mo

ferskner We've probably take about this before, but I only listen at work to keep me from getting freaked out. It helps a lot to never listen at home! And I'm mostly listening for Karen because she's the greatest. 5mo
britt_brooke @ferskner That‘s a good idea! Btw, I‘m still not right from I‘ll Be Gone in the Dark .... That book ruined me for true crime. 5mo
ferskner I feel your pain! That's why I like MFM - they don't go into too much detail, and the humor really does help. Plus, they will sometimes refuse to cover a crime because it's too horrific, which I respect. 5mo
britt_brooke @ferskner This is good to know! I‘ve only listened to one episode, but will listen again sometime. 5mo
Lea I somehow missed this was a self help book and not about true crime ha! It‘s okay so far but my lack of awareness kind of messed it up for me 🥴 5mo
britt_brooke @Lea I didn‘t know what to expect going in, so I was a bit thrown, too. 5mo
Reviewsbylola I don‘t listen to podcasts much but I have enjoyed theirs. I started reading this but put it aside because I thought it was boring. 5mo
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I was a bit underwhelmed by the book. I was expecting them to talk about the podcast. Not specific cases, but the process of choosing, recording, etc. I‘ll check out the podcast again sometime. 5mo
