It's always sad to finish up a series that you enjoy so much. With that considered, we were given a significantly larger volume to help counter it being only a trilogy of novels. I can't celebrate this series enough, and what a turn of events that transpires, keeping you in suspense right until the end. Neal has done a fantastoc job with this series, and I can only hope we get to see some more of the thunderhead in the future.

3.5⭐⭐⭐
I went into this book with high expectations. I loved the first two books but this one was a little confusing and the pacing was a little slow. This book introduces you to a whole bunch of new characters. Which it does come together, but I felt really lost until about half way. I did enjoy how it ended and it made sense but wish it could have been as entertaining as the first two.

I LOVED EVERY INCH OF THIS BOOK. I was so immersed in the story, I just couldn‘t stop. I love how the story really puts certain ideas into perspective that you never would have thought about. It was a such an amazing end written for this trilogy and I‘m a little sad it‘s over now.

✨Even though there‘s a lot of information throw at you in the first 200 or so pages, it‘s all definitely worth it at the end. As sad as I am to see the end of this trilogy (as far as I know it‘s the end), I think it was wrapped up very nicely- a bow, ribbon, and all.

This is the most ambitious by far of the three books in this trilogy, and I think the best one. So many different threads from the previous books come together, along with the new ones created in this book. So much thought-provoking content for students to discuss! Loved it... and YA is a harder sell for me, so I don‘t say that lightly.

Now I shall expediently return this to library for the next person and then drown my book hangover sorrows with cat snuggles.

I‘m disappointed with this, I loved the first 2 but this one was just ok. The narration (especially the beginning) was all over the place with several narrators and jumping around the timeline. It also lake the surprise factor found in the first 2 and had a lot of info dump. But by they end I was still interested in what was going on so that‘s something.

A worthy end to a terrific trilogy. I just loved it. If you like the idea of a future earth in which people are immortal and population control is achieved by scythes who “glean” people, start with Scythe and read the whole trilogy. I highly recommend the Barnes and Noble version of this book—it has notes from the author on every chapter in the back which I found quite illuminating.

Another great series comes to an end. How fun would it be to get inside Neal Shusterman‘s head for a day just to see how warped it really can get in there. This series is 100% worth it from start to finish. Each character is uniquely flawed for good or bad. I had to have yelled out loud, “I hate Goddard” at least 5 times, and thought it at least 20 times. A great ending to a fantastic series.

Omg you guys, is it Friday yet? I gave out 6 detentions today. SIX. I had freshman literally beat each other up in class, make phone calls, one kid spit his gum onto my desk, like what the actual f*ck?! Like they're usually rowdy, but I could feel the life draining out of me.

Wow—Neal Shusterman knows how to tell a good story. The Toll brings the Arc of the Scythe trilogy to a thrilling conclusion. As in his other books, Shusterman‘s characters, as well as readers, are confronted by & must deal with big questions about AI, faith, utopia, responsibility, power, & so much more. If I have one complaint, it‘s that there are some characters I would have liked to see more of but that being said, I really liked this book.

Lizpixie Why is that? There‘s a few books already up for nom that either have just been released or haven‘t been yet. Like The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern.🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Soubhiville I wondered about that too... 1mo

LibrarianRyan @Birdsong28 True, but that is not truely for the public. It's for that business. And its just part of the reason McMillian thinks that libraries are evil not allowing them to profit. The literary world is bigger than Amazon and Kindle. And while Amazon doesn't want to admit that, they should not get all the snaps for exclusivity contracts that pretty much say FU to people who can not afford it. (Sorry i'm on my high horse today)/. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @Lizpixie @soubhiville - GR is an Amazon company and the use their sales data to make the nominee list. Why do you think so much of it is new releases or big publicity books? Im sure there is also a little bit about who is repping a book like Oprah's new book club, and who is paying to have their book on the list. 1mo
Sweetkokoro This is why I don‘t bother with these kinds of lists or even that whole “New York times bestseller” crap. I looked into how that is determined and the whole thing is a load of bull. I had no idea GR was owned by amazon though, that explains a lot about how these lists are curated. 1mo
LibrarianRyan Yeah, Amazon bought it about 5 years ago I think. Originally it and Audible were independent companies but they were swallowed up. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro Amazon also bought Audible 11 years ago and has been racking up exclusivity deals for the company ever since. 1mo
Sweetkokoro That would explain why it feels like it‘s so hard for me to find Audible books outside of Audible :/ Amazon is truly frustrating. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @Sweetkokoro yep. And there are 2 main audiobook publishers in the US. blackstone audio and Recorded books. Amazon signed an exclusivity deal with Blackstone so all black stones audiobooks go to amazon for 4-6 months before it‘s allowed on other platforms. 1mo
ljuliel @Sweetkokoro ...have you tried out Downpour.com ? Their prices are 12.99 a credit, which is what most books are ( if you join ), you can purchase as many at a time as you‘d like, but membership is one a month. They also have a large selection of audiobooks for rent if your library doesn‘t have a very good selection or you don‘t want to keep the book, just listen and return. 1mo
ljuliel This Goodreads vote thing has me bamboozled. I‘ll admit, I‘ve not read hardly ANY of the books in any category. I tend to choose odd books apparently. Some of these books are brand new. I‘m a bit puzzled how they‘re allowed on the list for best books, unless there are a LOT of folks getting pre- release books . 1mo
LibrarianRyan @ljuliel Exactly. It's all a bussiness thing for Amazon/GR. Because it will get people buying the books they see on the list. I bet we start seeing sale prices for the ones that are 3 months or older. 1mo
ljuliel Yea, it‘s a bit frustrating though, Ryan,as I don‘t live in an area with Independent bookstores, I now need LargePrint, but none of our local libraries carry a nice selection of LP books, unless you like romance 🙄. I pretty much need to depend on a Kindle so I can read what I want and see the print. I‘m not sure what people in my category can do unless we use Amazon. That being said, the ebook prices are expensive . I‘m sorta stuck with Amazon 1mo
Sweetkokoro @ijuliel I haven‘t even heard of that site, every time I attempted to search for audible book places Audible is the only thing that comes up for searches. I like that they have a rental system as my library isn‘t the best and my hoopla is restricted to 5 borrows a month. Thanks for the tip, I‘ll check it out! 1mo
LibrarianRyan @ljuliel There are lots of places to get ebooks. But Amazon does put it at everyone's fingers. I recommend ereaders for lots of people who want large print. And you are right, if you don't read romance or thriller your selection is pretty low. We don't have any indi book stores close either. It's BN or nothing. But indies are making a comeback. you just need to have a big enough population to support them. 1mo
ljuliel Thanks Ryan. See, that‘s our problem here. We have about 6000 people in our town. The nearest larger town maybe has double that ? ( guessing) . They have one used bookstore which I do visit on occasion. We have a huge BN store about 25 minutes away. I rarely ever go there. We have many towns around us that are even smaller than us. We‘re not even big enough to get a McDonalds ! We DO have an abundance of auto part stores though. 🤨 1mo
LibrarianRyan @ljuliel I so get that. Before living in the capitol i lived in a smaller town of 18,555 (do enough library reports and you have the pop memorized) but it's a dying town. One of the bright spots Walden books closed and the closest book store was an hour away. There was a used book store, but if you didn't like Mystery and romance, you were out of luck. I'm also a military brat and I remember there being no place to get books but the resale 1mo
LibrarianRyan @ljuliel shops or the library. But most base libraries are not for the kids of soldiers, but for them. I remember my parents let me start reading harlequins (they were a lot less risque when I was young) because they decided I was reading too many books on war and torture for a 12 year old. 😁 1mo
ljuliel Funny, Ryan. 😂. The lesser of 2 evils. Romance or War. 1mo
BookNAround For those wanting to look beyond Audible, Libro has many of the same titles and benefits the indie bookstore of your choice. 1mo
LibrarianRyan @BookNAround very true. I love them. They just done have the exclusives. And Book bun started a new audiobook service called Chirp. 1mo

I do like this cover. I just wish it had been more purple and not so much green. As it is, it is so close to Thunderhead that it makes Scythe stand out like the red hooded step child.

GondorGirl The owlcrate edition is going to be more green than purple. I like it a lot more. 1mo
