So slow. So dragging.

And the giant "racism/sexism" mallet with which the author hammered her message home from the start.

Ugh!

I started this book on 12 Jan. Normally, a book this size would take me two, maybe three days. The writing style feels forced, the world building & character building lacks, and the plot is taking too long to get anywhere. After forcing myself to pick it up again tonight, I‘ve decided to admit I‘m not enjoying it and move on.

DNF‘d at 21%

This was my January #doublespin.

Dueling gentlemen magicians, powerful witches, familiars, fairies, disrupted social structures, race, and politics all combine in this ultimately fun novel. Cho (pictured above) is a great world builder who gives a new spin on this sub genre. Magic is not just for old white men in this fantasy‘s version of regency England.

Funny, magical, adventurous - but Prunella and Zacharias were by far the best part! Because of the serious, old-fashioned writing style (which was masterfully pulled off), it took me a while to realise the book isn't as serious as it reads as; after that, I just fell in love with it. Looking forward to a reread ASAP.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a fun fantasy read that had a lot of wonderful things going on. Racial and gender inequality amongst London thaumaturges along with familiars and fairies and dragons, this was a very thoughtful book that packed a lot of story in but did a really good job not making the reader feel overwhelmed. I really liked this one. This was my #bookspinbingo No. 19 pick.

DNF. There's nothing wrong with the book, really. But i just don't care. I'm not invested in the characters. The plot is inferiorly reminiscent of Dr. Strange and Mr. Norrell. And, Good Lord, is it slow. Gave up after page 100.

And it was a bookclub pick, so i wanted to finish it so i could join in on the discussion. But it just isn't worth it....

#bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Life is too short for books that don't engage you!! 4y
AllisonM89 @TheAromaofBooks exactly! The only reason i got as far as i did was because i wanted to be able to join in on the book club discussion. But so not worth it. I know the rest of the world seems to love this book, so i guess I'm the outlier 😂 4y

Yes, yes, yes to everything about this book 🙌

British magicians, witches and sorcerers, fights against racism and sexism, diversity, a little bit of romance, and a lot of intrigue are the foundation of the story, and I‘m here for it!

I can‘t believe it took me this long to read it, but I‘m so glad I did. Now I just need the second book.

The caterpillar paused the busy movement of its jaws to reply:

Book 4 #newyearwhodis
This is a book I‘ve wanted to read for a long time but never quite got around to picking up. I‘m so glad @BarbaraJean had it on her list! A delightful fantasy set in regency England with magic and fairy familiars. I loved Prunella as a strong female character who does what she wants regardless of societal expectations. I liked Zacharias also and his advocacy for the change in women‘s rights to magic was well done. ⤵️

MeganAnn My only issue with this was that the romance part of the ending was kind of abrupt. The few hints into the characters feelings through the story were brief and sporadic. I would have liked the threads of their feelings for each other to have been a little stronger part of the story so we could feel them coming together. Overall though, I loved it and gave this 4.5 stars. I‘ll definitely read the second book! Also my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 4y

Love fantasy that‘s a blend of historical fiction, magical fantasy, and social reality? Here, both MCs are POC and Cho blends her story with social commentary—against racism, classism, and ableism. She weaves these issues into the universe she creates, although her characters deal with their situation more magically than today‘s people of color would.

#WyrdAndWonder day 23: comfort reading

Why yes, when I think about the fantasy that gives me the warm fuzzies it DOES typically involve smashing the patriarchy 😇

Zen Cho‘s effervescent alt Regency romps have a dash of romance, a spite of Fae, a disdain of dragons and joyously obstinate heroines I adore (plus Zacharias is a cinnamon roll). What‘s not to like?

DGRachel Those editions are gorgeous! 😍😍 5y

This was a delight. I think this is what might result if Jane Austen was tasked with writing Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Take a similar setting and themes—a decline in English magic, quarrels within a society of English magicians, some back-and-forth with Fairy—but treat it with far more lightness, throw in some witty banter & a charmingly nonconformist female magician, make it 400 pages shorter...and you have Sorcerer to the Crown. Loved it.

This had a lot of good aspects throughout; the characters and world - even being another imperialist Britain injected with magic - were engaging and new, despite with a lot of repetitiveness during dialogues and some of the context given being heavy handed. Will definitely be reading the sequel.
