Black Powder War
Black Powder War: A Novel of Temeraire | Naomi Novik
A splendid series. Anne McCaffrey Naomi Novik has done for the Napoleonic Wars what Anne McCaffrey did for science fiction: constructed an alternate reality in which dragons are real in a saga that is impressively original, fully developed, and peopled with characters you care about. David Weber, author of the Honor Harrington series After their fateful adventure in China, Capt. Will Laurence of His Majesty s Aerial Corps and his extraordinary dragon, Temeraire, are waylaid by a mysterious envoy bearing urgent new orders from Britain. Three valuable dragon eggs have been purchased from the Ottoman Empire, and Laurence and Temeraire must detour to Istanbul to escort the precious cargo back to England. Time is of the essence if the eggs are to be borne home before hatching. Yet disaster threatens the mission at every turnthanks to the diabolical machinations of the Chinese dragon Lien, who blames Temeraire for her masters death and vows to ally herself with Napoleon and take vengeance. Then, faced with shattering betrayal in an unexpected place, Laurence, Temeraire, and their squad must launch a daring offensive. But what chance do they have against the massed forces of Bonapartes implacable army?BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Naomi Novik's Empire of Ivory.

Finally got around to reading the next book in the Temeraire series. When I'm reading these books, I'm totally into them. When I'm not reading them, I don't care about them haha Novik uses a rather formal language for these to make them sound more old-fashioned. It mostly works, but also makes them come through as rather impersonal at times. I love the characters, the concept, and the story, but somehow these books just don't hook me in. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) However, I'll definitely be continuing to read these. I'm enjoying purchasing the reissued (and absolutely gorgeous) paperbacks one at a time as I get to them.

This is the 3rd book in the Temeraire series. I thoroughly enjoyed it. In this one Laurence and his company leave China & travel through the old Silk Road to Istanbul to pick up 3 dragon eggs for Great Britain 🐉

Current #Audiobook through OverDrive!
Almost done, just another hour and a half to go!

TheBookKeepers I need to get back to this series! I loved it but only made it to book 4 4y
CrowCAH @TheBookKeepers this is book three. I plan on continuing the series this year; we‘ll see how far I get. 4y
TheBookKeepers I read the first 4 back to back and then felt like I needed a break and got distracted 😂 I loved them all though! 4y
CrowCAH @TheBookKeepers I place a couple other audiobooks in between just for that reason, so I don‘t get burnout from the series. Hopefully, you delve back into the war with Temeraire! 🐉 4y

1. No I never have. But I know through Amazon they offer deals where you can buy both the ebook and the audiobook.

2. I multitask all the time when listening: working, crafting, daydreaming! Yes, the advantage is that I‘m able to read more books in a year; usually works out to be half of the books are audiobooks.

CrowCAH @Klou sorry forgot to mention that you tagged me! 😊 4y

I enjoy these books, but they are slow paced and I certainly don't feel need to read them back to back. Eventually I'll jump back in, but I'm going to try to get through a lot of other books on my shelves first

#tbrbingo for 2020! I just started Black Powder War a little before midnight last night.

Lucy_Anywhere You've got some great books lined up for 2020! I loved The Lions of Al-Rassan and Outlander 📚 I love the idea - I'm trying to read more literature this year so I'm tempted to do something similar! 5y
twohectobooks @Lucy_Anywhere yep, this is basically all the remaining books on the #modernlibrarytop100 list, plus spaces for my book club reads, plus unread books on my shelf. I didn‘t have room for two of my unread books, alas! I find it‘s a good motivational tool. Hopefully next year I‘ll be able to get it down to a more traditional 5x5 square! 5y

No escapism for me, apparently.

"Justice is expensive, that's why there's so little of it...there is a limit to the evil one despot alone can do, and if he is truly vicious he may be overthrown; a hundred corrupt members of Parliament may together do as much injustice or more, and be the less easy to uproot."

I took a break from these books after just loving book 1 and putting it on my all time favorites list, then being rather bored in book 2. I really enjoyed this one, it doesn‘t have quite the pizazz of the first but is a drastic improvement on the second, and I‘m loving being back with Lawrence and temeraire 🐉 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Caroline2 Oh I‘ve had the first 3 books of this series on my tbr shelf for aggesss! Sounds like it‘s time to move em up the pile! 👍🏻 6y

Will Lawrence and his dragon, Temeraire, are finally on their way back to England from their trip to China. When the transport ship burns and urgent orders come to get dragon eggs, Lawrence hires a guide to take them overland. Adventures with feral dragons and unknown lands ensue, all the while with Napoleon's forces a growing threat.

I love this fantasy series, the characters, and the humor. I'm rereading earlier books to finish the series.

TheBookKeepers I need to pick this series back up soon!! Loved books 1-3! Her writing is so descriptive! 6y
bell7 @TheBookKeepers I read the first five years ago and decided it was going to be one of my reading project this year to finish the series. Have you read Uprooted too? The sequel is coming out this year and I'm looking forward to reading it! 6y

The cat thought it unreasonable that I wanted a photo of books. Nevertheless I am enjoying the series. I read several Napoleonic era series as a kid - Patrick O'Brien and Bernard Cornwall because my older brother owned them - and this series adds dragons 🐉 so how could I not enjoy it? I also like that Novik continues to develop the themes of freedom and self-determination for the dragons.

This wasn't as good as I was hoping. There was a lot of traveling around and not a lot of action for the majority of the novel. It was definitely setting up something bigger so I'll have to read he next one soon.

This continues to be a solid series with excellent characters, world-building, and plot. This entry, like the previous one, started out a little slow for me.

I loved the interaction with the feral dragons, the introduction of a serious nemesis for Temeraire, and that we got to see the main characters in truly bleak circumstances for the first time. They've been in danger before, but never in an overall losing situation.

Also, RIP Digby. :(

2017 #51 fantasy audio I didn't enjoy this one as much. Not because there was anything wrong but because I was frustrated with the characters. Again not in the writing but because the writing was so good I wanted to climb into the book and smack some non colonial sense into the characters. +

I loved the first two books but this one just isn't holding my attention so I've had to let it go. I don't know if I'm just not in a place to read this book right now or if it's the story but I feel like I just don't care as I'm reading it. What's wrong with me??? It's about dragons!!! 😵

Tsubame Maybe it's just not the right time to read it now ^^ Sometimes that happened to me too, but when I got back to the book later it was great 😉 8y

Unphilosophize It's a pretty slow burn and not at all like the other books in the series. It also seems to be a very polarizing book, you either love it or hate it. I think it's really setting up the fourth book so if you really loved the first two I'd check out some reviews for the later books to see if it picks back up which I suspect it will! 7y
Foxyfictionista @Unphilosophize It's a tricky thing for me because since I didn't like it, I'm disinclined to pick up any others. Perhaps that's harsh, but because I have so many books that I really want to read I have to be ruthless. 7y
Unphilosophize I totally get it. I find it hard to justify unhauling books that I've already bought without reading them fully. 7y

I wish publishers realize ebook borrowers and readers appreciate the actual cover art too.

I also wish my 3yo would give me a few moments of peace to have an after-dinner Kirin and read my book but that's just not happening right now!

Aseleener Agree about the cover art. And I feel you about the kid: my 6 yr old wouldn't go to sleep tonight bc she misses me. I spend *literally* every second with her outside of school and sleep! Trying to enjoy this time that she likes me so much bc I know it won't last forever! 8y

This one felt a little long in some parts. The Prussian campaign was a bit too long for my taste. I liked the whole silk road trip. I've read a lot on that area and how caravans traveled across the silk road. It was done well. I liked the feral dragons and how the role they played in the novel. I have no idea how Temeraire is going to reconcile his view of dragon's rights to the reality of Laurence's England. 👍

Today's #booktober post made me want to continue reading the Temeraire series so I downloaded book four in the morning and things just did not go well after that. Not the book that is but life in general! The five-year-old has some kind of stomach bug and can't keep food down. He's napping upstairs. The three-year-old is healthy (thankfully) but decided to fall asleep on me so I can't move from the couch. That means reading time!
