A pretty tough book, not exactly a light read. It's an interesting world but I wasn't exactly mind-blown by it. 😔

I am kinda undone with myself because I DNF'd 1984. I was doing the audio for a bookclub (pairing with Newman's Julia) and then when I was unable to make bookclub I realized there were other things I wanted to read more than 84 for the fourth or fifth time. But still it is lingering in my mind so i will likely pick the audio back up!

A reread, almost 30-years to the day that I last read it for A-Level English Literature. Wanted to reread before Sandra Newman‘s retelling, Julia. I loved it then and I loved it again now. Can I feel another Orwell deep dive coming on?

Hooked_on_books I read this pairing earlier this year and really enjoyed both. 1mo

1984 was 40 years ago (doesn‘t seem like the future anymore), but Orwell‘s views are still relevant today, like AI, war-is-peace, and the thought police… “Two and two are four."
"Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not easy to become sane.”

Thought provoking. Not an easy read, but worth reading. Orwell did a good job in drawing in the reader to the book. While it paints a bleak picture, there's a semblance of hope that slowly disappears.
The middle chapter is slightly tedious with "the book" parts, but does provide much social commentary and background. The last chapter is particularly tough to read, with there being a detailed description of Smith's torture.
Definitely recommend.

Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the preset controls the past.

Reread 1984 so I was better prepared for Julia. Overall I am glad I did, I had forgotten much about the book, and it is interesting to read after reading Wifedom earlier this year and understanding what Orwell's wife gave him (this story idea came from a poem of hers).
The story is quite depressing but fully plausible. Coming out of WWII as he did seeing the 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures Propaganda and being part of the Spanish resistance as he and Eileen were - the history of how an author gets to a classic can often be as interesting as the book itself. Overall I thought it needed a bit of editing. I was enthralled the first 1/4 then found myself skimming, even skipping pages that went too deep into military strategy. But I do think it is an important book about government control and I understand why teachers still assign it 4mo

Without doubt I prefer the humour and the levity of Animal Farm. Somehow the corruption and torture seem less harrowing when committed by farm animals. Nevertheless, 1984 is quite an amazing book and the influence it has had on our thinking and our language is incredible. I hate the torture scenes - the rats, the description of Winston when he looks in the mirror and the betrayal of everything he believes. Orwell was bleak.

Classics! I wanted to re-read 1984 before I tackle Julia, so getting it for Bookspin is great! #BookedInTime for May is Biblical Fiction, which is also great because I have fallen off my author of the year books reading Jose Saramago's Cain this month - and probably a couple of others by him as they are past BookSpins I didn't get to.

I don‘t remember 1984 well enough to know how close to the original text this adaptation is. I do not listen to many full cast audiobooks and it was certainly entertaining. And short.
I was keen to listen as 1) it was free (editor‘s choice for April, and 2) Wifedom prompted me to revisit some of Orwell‘s work. I still feel as though I need to read the book though, now to both consider this adaptation and Wifedom.

While part of me wishes I had read this sooner, it is utterly fascinating from a 2024/post-2016 lens and I think it thus resonated much more deeply than it would have otherwise. Overall, I thought it was fantastic, though the book within a book section disrupted the momentum; I wish that had been done in a different way.

Librarybelle I‘ve yet to read this, but it‘s definitely on my to read list 8mo

BkClubCare Yowza - reading this for the first time. I, too, read this nearer to 1984 than later. I think fondly of my experience subbing at a HS English class, when I was asked to read aloud- I could barely (Failed, actually) keep it together- was crying! While reading. I have no idea what those kids thought of me; but I trusted the teacher to explain. 8mo

There's a scene from Bones that I recently watched where she punches a men's rights activist after he says she should be muzzled, and it's super clunky, and so despite agreeing with the sentiment, I watched the scene fairly dispassionately. 1984 comes off much the same. I can agree with the warnings and find value in the message, but still come out of it without really caring what happens to Winston. Let's see if I feel the same about Julia.

AllDebooks What's Nick Offerman got to do with 1984? 😅 9mo
Larkken @AllDebooks ha! Sorry forgot to talk about the picture. One of the more prolific covers for the novel that is supposed to be of Big Brother makes me think of Ron Swanson - and a search on Reddit of “Ron Swanson big brother” seems to indicate that others are being driven a bit crazy by it too lol https://www.audiobooks.com/audiobook/1984/103069 9mo

Not my first time reading 1984 but it is the first time I listened to it. Simon Prebble does a fantastic reading; narrators like him make me love audiobooks. 1984 is one of my favorite novels, and personally, it‘s still one of the greatest ever written. But I did find a few bothersome things: I don‘t think Orwell had much respect for women. The third act is repetitive and opts for more tell over show. Still, I‘m amazed by how well this holds up.
