I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as I did Gilgamesh, but it is still a beautiful and deeply powerful story.

This is my second time attempting the read this book and I actually got to the end of it thanks to audio books.
I never understood it the first time maybe because I'm not a fan of medieval poetry but it's much easier to listen to. #audiobooks #readingmyownbooks #classics #beowulf #reread #reading #oldstories #audio #listerningisreading #screamathon #readathon 📚📚📚☠️

I love when a book leads you to another. I recently read The Salt Path, and Beowulf plays a part in that book. So it prompted me to finally read it. I enjoyed the language of it and the story. The introduction was useful for me as I've not studied English lit beyond GCSE, so it gave me some context. I liked how Heaney brought some Ulster words into his translation. Really cool. Awesome matching bookmark from @libby1

Book #46: I should start off my review of this story with the premise that I do not generally like stories that are written in "Old English" or something close to modern English, such as Shakespeare. They take too much for me to get invested in the story personally and I find that detracts from my enjoyment. The story of Beowulf is about a famous man...

@trueisa4letterword and I went down the rabbit hole this morning with “lik the bred” cow poems. This classic makes me lol so hard I cry. Now I can‘t shake the image of Grendel as a giant aurochs who just wants to lik the Danes but ends up accidentally eating them. 😂 #likthebred #cowpoems

More cats and Beowulf. These No Fear editions are perfect for teaching. Even my students who struggle have no problem grasping the story when I use these.

ErinC I love No Fear versions! I tell my students to use it whenever I teach Hamlet and The Scarlet Letter. We read original, but they can use the “plain English” to review! 1y

Day 3: Favorite Fantasy Author.
Tolkien, for me. I don‘t know if Beowulf was his favorite book. I don‘t think he really had one...but he seems to be fond of Beowulf.

My Dad didn‘t read to us much. But when I was very small, when we took long road trips, my Dad would read The Hobbit aloud. So Bilbo & Gandalf have a special place in my Mind Palace.
#AGameOfFavorites

theresidentromantic Thanks for sharing this picture! You know, he looks a bit like I always imagined Sherlock... 1y
Bookwomble Beowulf would certainly have been one of Tolkien's favourite books. He translated it and taught it, and gave lectures on it. The Rohirrim are his conception of the Anglo-Saxon society of the Beowulf period and Theoden King's hall of Meduseld is an analogue of Hrothgar's hall, Heorot, in which Beowulf first contends with Grendel (apologies for the lecture 😊). 1y
AshleyHoss820 @theresidentromantic He kind of does! A picture like this was on the back of my Dad‘s copies of LoTR & I just love it! 1y
AshleyHoss820 @Bookwomble No apology necessary! I love the information! It coincides with what I had been looking up! 😄 1y

#Riotgrams #BookPodcasts

Unlike audiobooks, I actually listen to lots of podcasts. I work at a computer so podcasts get me through the day! Some bookish podcasts I am into are: Overdue, Annotated, The Thread, and But That‘s Another Story. Revisionist History often has literature/education adjacent episodes as well. The pictured one had a great episode on the history of the English language, discussing Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, and Shakespeare.

LectricSheep Sounds fascinating! I‘m going to listen to an episode! 1y

A little taste of three different translations of a section of this epic that mentions Beowulf‘s #mother. (Grendel‘s mother gets most of the Press.) I greatly prefer the Heaney translation, but that‘s just my opinion. #quotsymay18 #readingresolutions @TK-421 @Jess7

Graywacke Fun to compare these. The first one, Gummere, seems like would require a brain adjustment to read. 2y
TK-421 Cool! I agree that the Heaney translation is much more enjoyable to read than the other two. Which section is this from? I'm curious to see how these translations compare to the edition of Beowulf I have (translated by Burton Raffel). 2y
Lcsmcat @TK-421 It‘s marked XV, Hrothgar‘s Gratitude in one, XIV in the second, and in the Heaney there‘s no sections, just line numbers. It‘s after Beowulf defeats Grendel. 2y

Another #Bookhaul! This stack from one of my favourite used bookstores: Wee Book Inn on Whyte Ave (Edmonton, AB). I only get to check out this store once or twice a year so I love each second spent searching the shelves, taking in the atmosphere. This time, however, it was a lot busier and noisier than usual so no bookstore kitty in sight 😿The tagged book is one I plan to read this year for one of the reading challenges. #BookstoreLove #TBR

One does not read Beowulf for pleasure; it is a learning experience. That said, it has plenty of action, sword flinging, corslet-wearing, extraordinarily strong heroes, who slay bloodthirty monsters. This medieval epic strongly inspired Tolkien, and through him, generations of fantasy writers, movie makers, and role playing games. I was picturing the graphics and characters from the Skellige Isles from Witcher 3 the entire time. ⭐⭐⭐/5

Sydsavvy I thought the movie really did it justice. 3y
Gezemice @Sydsavvy Have not seen the movie - maybe I should! 3y
Sydsavvy Oh yes, it's the recentish one where they took the actors and made it look like a graphic novel. I can't say cartoon because of course it's a far cry from a cartoon. I can't remember if it was named Beowulf or Grendel or what. 3y
See All 9 Comments
Sydsavvy But it really helps show the emotion of it, and helped me understand the depth of the story. 3y
Gezemice @Sydsavvy That sounds good! It is hard to understand a lot of it because of the language and the confusing names, and story-within-stories. 3y
Sydsavvy Yes it totally takes care of that issue! 3y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Mega-important to note that the recent adaptation of Beowulf that @Sydsavvy is referencing was co-scripted by the man himself, Neil Gaiman. 3y
