The Body Snatchers
The Body Snatchers | Jack Finney
57 posts | 39 read | 33 to read
Originally published in 1955 Jack Finney's sinister SF tale has outgrown the initial debate about whether it satirized Communism or the conformity of US society at the time, to become a classic of paranoia; an examination of our fear of 'the other'. Most people know the story from seeing THE INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, the classic 1978 remake (one of the few Hollwood remakes said to better than the original, made in 1956) starring Donald Sutherland. Here's your chance to read the original source; a story that has resonated with readers and viewers for more than 50 years.

It seemed fitting to watch The Invasion of the Body Snatchers in preparation for the #BodyDoubleReadathon. This was the 1978 version with the incomparable Donald Sutherland, RIP. The snack of choice is, of course, edamame pods!

#HauntedShelf #Flerken @PuddleJumper

The cover of Finney's book that the movie is based on is for #ScavengerHunt #monochrome.

Bookwomble Pairing that book and edamame pods is a work of genius! 🙇‍♂️ 🫛🙇‍♂️ 1mo

A few minutes reading in the sun outside the British Library.

I'm obsessed with these new SF masterworks covers. I may have bought 2 and coveted several more.

It‘s difficult to predict the future & this book which was written in the 1950s takes place in Mill Valley, CA in the 1970s.
That said, the hysterical & helpless female protagonist does not reflect the Women‘s Lib movement of the 1970s. She‘s written as a product of her time.
Everything was moving along great until the last 3rd of the book where the exposition was endless.
Otherwise, this book is a classic for a reason & definitely worth the read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ For my birthday, my boyfriend got me this amazing classic sci-fi book that I have had difficulty finding over the years ❤️ It was so amazing! I loved how we go from picturing this small town as perfect to the characters finally starting to see how much the town is dying making it easy for an invader to take over. I also learned about the Mattoon Maniac from this book. Really great sci-fi read! Recommend!

1. I‘ve given a brief description of this before, but here‘s the full, long-winded lowdown: I started as Bookwyrm42 because it‘s my favorite number and I love dragons and how wyrm is pronounced “verm”. There were dozens of other people using “bookworm” or some variation of it with a number as their username and I felt like I wasn‘t unique enough. I wanted to still use it in my name so I got out my Thesaurus and looked up synonyms for ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm huge/massive/etc. Then I mashed them up until I was happy AND took up every available character space. 😂🤣
2. Anywhere outside. In bad weather or winter, it‘s snuggled under a fuzzy blanket with my cat on top of me. 🐈❤️
3. So far it‘s the tagged. I knew I was bound to like it, but was surprised by how much I truly loved it.
4. 2 humans; 1 of each: cat, hedgehog, gargoyle gecko; 3 guinea pigs; 12 chickens, 9 full-sized and 3 bantams. ⬇️

I LOVE the 1950‘s film. Even knowing the story, I felt the tension and unease that permeates throughout. I was surprised how modern it seemed. It touches on the “us vs. them” mentality but it also approached racism, sexism, equality, man vs. nature, and the wedge technology is driving between human interactions. I was also pleasantly surprised by how different the ending in the novel is to any of the films I‘ve seen. Absolutely a new fav!

AmyG My favorite version. 4y

2. Wheel of Time 😅 (Obsessed much? 😜) Closely followed by Arc of a Scythe.
3. I LOVE the original black & white film (not so much the remake, though I adore Leonard Nimoy) and have never read the book. Thoroughly enjoying it!

I tag anyone who wants to play and hasn‘t been tagged yet! (I play along to these all the time without being tagged, don‘t feel like you have to wait! ❤️)

I've seen all of the adaptations of this book, so basically knew the plot, I guess why that's why I put off reading it for so long but I really enjoyed the book and I'm looking forward to watching the 1978 version again - god that movie is terrifying.

#TBRtemptation post 4! (The original film adaptation is one of my favorite movies!) On a quiet evening in Mill Valley, California, Dr. Miles Bennell uncovers an insidious, horrifying plot. Silently, aliens are taking over his family's, friends', neighbors', and lover's bodies and minds. It's the ultimate alien invasion versus the human spirit to endure and fight. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @bnp Well there are 2 evenly spaced in my garden, so I definitely planted them. But I keep all the boxes, tags, stakes from ones I plant for later identification....and what came up doesn‘t look like what I planted. Loved it! I have never read this classic before and with my first experience, I have dubbed this as one of my top favorite horror books of all time. Although the movies are similar to the book, this literature outshines its many adaptations with content, development, and unsettling scares. I highly recommend to all sci-fi and horror fans.

Day 4 #MayBookFlowers #inagalaxyfarfaraway Looking for my books w/aliens & other planets-I got caught by all the cool covers for this classic. I remember the movie tie-in one in the center & my e-book has the top left one but some of the older ones are awesome & I can't resist taglines like: "Was this his woman-or an alien life form?" & "They were alien, they were seed pods, they wanted human bodies-and day-by-day, one-by-one, they took them..."?
