pickThis is a great historical fiction book. They do a great job of showing different family dynamics while also keeping in mind the values and time period. Amazing read for anyone look to take themselves back in time and experience fighting for social justice in the 60‘s.

pickI really enjoyed this MG story about 3 sisters visiting the mother who walked away from them for one month in the summer of 1968. They travel from Brooklyn to Oakland & get introduced to the workings of the Black Panthers and how their mother came to be who she was. As a kid with an unusual upbringing, I felt the confusion these girls conveyed and what they brought to their unique situation!
We aren't always given the parents we need but we manage with the parents we have. Growing up with much the same personality as Delphine, I understand how hard it is to just be a kid. My kids seem so childish to me, at 10 and 13, but then I stop to remind myself that they're probably fine. I was the one raised in unusual circumstances. ❤️
pick1st Book 2022: I return to no excuses. There simply aren‘t any. It takes me awhile. That‘s it! That‘s the answer. Not the reading of the book. The selection of the book, yes…so many days pass by, still I remain undecided. Then once the choice is made, there continues to be an issue with the motivation to read the book. It was simpler here because the cover art drew attention, the interaction between the sisters commanded feelings of affection,👇🏽
so-soThis got recommended to me by my school‘s librarian, but it didn‘t really click with me. So many of the truly interesting plot points are merely brushed away because they seem inexplicable to the child narrator. The ending, for example, could have been so much more.
pickThis is a sweet middle-grade novel about identity and family, responsibility and belonging. It covers a period of time in Oakland that I know little about, and I found the perspective interesting. Sometimes authors have trouble keeping child characters acting consistent, age-wise, throughout a novel, but Williams-Garcia keeps each of the sisters distinct and consistent.

We are having a rare hot dry summer. Lots of heat advisories. I'm grateful though that we didn't get the smoke this year from all the fires. The last couple of years were unbreathable. It should get up to 90° today and stay close to 90° until the weekend and then maybe we'll go back to normal room-temp before Fall.

The father of the girls gave money for them to used on the trip however, the mom takes all of it and give them a daily allowance. The Mom was part of the Black Panther Club and she gets arrested and the girls are once again left on their own.

pickLast week I drove to New Hampshire (and back) with my kids. It‘s a long drive and we minimized stops due to COVID-19. So, a great audiobook was a must. One Crazy Summer and the sequel PS Be Eleven were perfect. We really loved the adventures of the three sisters. Highly recommend if you‘re looking for a good family audiobook.

I've read 4 non-fiction books that specifically deal with anti-racism, but have also read fiction that deals with these themes. I would say One Crazy Summer even though it's fiction had the biggest impact on me because she humanized these characters from history such as blank Panthers that were demonized by history told through a white lense.

With so many awards this is a must read (LC or RA) book!
pickMy only disappointment was that I'm just now reading this book. Although I would consider it a middle-grades novel, I learned so much. For example, attached is a picture of Little Bobby Hutton, a 17-year-old black panther recruit who attempted to surrender to police in only his underwear, so they would see he did not have any weapons but was shot and killed anyway.
In the summer of 1968, after travelling from Brooklyn to Oakland, California, to spend a month with the mother they barely know, eleven-year-old Delphine and her two younger sisters arrive to a cold welcome as they discover that their mother, a dedicated poet and printer, is resentful of the intrusion of their visit and wants them to attend a nearby Black Panther summer camp.

It‘s a fun story of 3 sisters who go to spend a summer with their mother, who left them when they were little. The way the girls talk to each other and interact is adorable, I loved them. The parental relationship is strange, but the community connection they find is special.
A good middle grade read.
