I really enjoyed this MG story about 3 sisters visiting the mother who walked away from them for one month in the summer of 1968. They travel from Brooklyn to Oakland & get introduced to the workings of the Black Panthers and how their mother came to be who she was. As a kid with an unusual upbringing, I felt the confusion these girls conveyed and what they brought to their unique situation!

Bookwormjillk I loved this series so much 2y

We aren't always given the parents we need but we manage with the parents we have. Growing up with much the same personality as Delphine, I understand how hard it is to just be a kid. My kids seem so childish to me, at 10 and 13, but then I stop to remind myself that they're probably fine. I was the one raised in unusual circumstances. ❤️

TheBookHippie I did the same thing, for the same reason. I love this book, it's a favorite! 2y

1st Book 2022: I return to no excuses. There simply aren‘t any. It takes me awhile. That‘s it! That‘s the answer. Not the reading of the book. The selection of the book, yes…so many days pass by, still I remain undecided. Then once the choice is made, there continues to be an issue with the motivation to read the book. It was simpler here because the cover art drew attention, the interaction between the sisters commanded feelings of affection,👇🏽

Nute the responsibility of an eldest sibling to younger siblings was immediately familiar, the signs of the times in their educational perspective are lessons that just stay in your face no matter how many decades have passed…and then the curiosity about Celine and her motherhood and her essential nature was insanely magnetic, maddening and frustrating (almost incredible and unbelievable) all at once and then suddenly enlightening.👇🏽 (edited) 2y
Nute It‘s children‘s literature from the point of view of a child so the very large issues (life in Oakland, California 1968, being black in America in the 60s, the Black Panther Movement, maternal abandonment, self-sacrifice & the greater good) are looked at through that lens which possibly leaves an adult reader wanting more grit, but that desire is still in good service of the book. It sends us other places in search of answers and information.👇🏽 (edited) 2y
Nute As readers, we are often willing and content with that action.
Highly Recommended!

This got recommended to me by my school‘s librarian, but it didn‘t really click with me. So many of the truly interesting plot points are merely brushed away because they seem inexplicable to the child narrator. The ending, for example, could have been so much more.

This is a sweet middle-grade novel about identity and family, responsibility and belonging. It covers a period of time in Oakland that I know little about, and I found the perspective interesting. Sometimes authors have trouble keeping child characters acting consistent, age-wise, throughout a novel, but Williams-Garcia keeps each of the sisters distinct and consistent.

We are having a rare hot dry summer. Lots of heat advisories. I'm grateful though that we didn't get the smoke this year from all the fires. The last couple of years were unbreathable. It should get up to 90° today and stay close to 90° until the weekend and then maybe we'll go back to normal room-temp before Fall.

I've read 4 non-fiction books that specifically deal with anti-racism, but have also read fiction that deals with these themes. I would say One Crazy Summer even though it's fiction had the biggest impact on me because she humanized these characters from history such as blank Panthers that were demonized by history told through a white lense.

My only disappointment was that I'm just now reading this book. Although I would consider it a middle-grades novel, I learned so much. For example, attached is a picture of Little Bobby Hutton, a 17-year-old black panther recruit who attempted to surrender to police in only his underwear, so they would see he did not have any weapons but was shot and killed anyway.

Rachelleleduc https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/one-crazy-summer This website includes discussion questions and expression activities to better understand the novel. The UDL principle 9.3 - Develop self assessment and reflection- could work perfectly with this as students really understand and asses what they comprehended from this book. Also coincided with ESOL 6- as you continually monitor students‘ comprehension. (edited) 4y
KarliCrean I also read this book. I thought it was kind of slow and had to keep reminding myself that it was written for younger kids! I believe this book gives a good insight on what life was like back then when the black panthers era was around 4y
DrSpalding This is one of your best posts. Excellent resource, excellent elaboration of the principles and strategies and a simple but concise summary that reflects the text. 4y

This is one of my favorite books! These sisters are devoted to each other, funny, endearing, plucky, and yet innocent and vulnerable. The summer they are sent across the country to visit their birth mom is a #memorable and transformative adventure!

Historical fiction. This book tells the story of children placed in the setting of the early ABalck Panther Party. The author does a great job in using a story line about three young sister to portray a topic and moment in history that is rarely present in Children‘s books.

“One Crazy Summer” by Rita Williams-Garcia is a great HF book that tells the story of three young sisters who venture across country in 1968 to find their mother who abandoned them years before. This Scott O‘Dell award winning book is packed with historical information for young readers to learn about, and overall, would make a great LC read. #UCFLAE3414F19

abbie-cadabbie The lesson plan I chose includes essential questions that relate to the historical events that occurred in the 1960s, comprehension questions, vocabulary, and other great things to pair with the book! https://www.matchfishtank.org/curriculum/english-language-arts/5th-grade-literat... 4y
abbie-cadabbie The UDL strategy I chose is to foster collaboration and community (8.3) due to the fact that I would have students read this in literature circles. The ESOL strategy I chose is to promote cooperation (2) 4y
DrSpalding This is quality historical fiction at its best. This book taught me a lot and would easily be something you could use in literature circles in your intermediate elementary classrooms to complement social studies instruction. 4y

This HF, Newberry and Coretta Scott King award winning book written by Rita Williams-Garcia is about three young girls from Brooklyn who visit their mom in Oakland, California during the Black Panther Era. The girls spend most of their time in Oakland out of the house and exploring the area and learning about the Black Panther Party.

Mwinship This book would be great for a LC. I found this discussion guide to give to students to prompt discussion during a LC: https://www.rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/One-Crazy-Summer-Discu...
The EL strategy 2 and UDL Guideline 8.3 about collaboration and promoting small groups align with this book and LC.

This HF book by Rita Williams-Garcia tells about these 3 sisters who moved from New York to Oakland, California for the summer to visit their mom, who abandoned them. The book, as you can see, won many awards: Scott O‘Dell, Newberry, Coretta Scott King, National Book, and New York Times Best Seller. #ucflae3414f19

maciforster This book should be used for either LC or IR. It is a chapter book so I think it would be better for students to take their own time to read and comprehend it. This is a portion of a lesson plan: https://www.rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/One-Crazy-Summer-Discu... I think using this will combine with UDL principle 8.3 and EL strategy #10 4y
DrSpalding This historical fiction title could be a very good independent read to support social studies or as we used it, a literature circle. Well done and excellent resource. 4y

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia is a HF novel I would use for a LC. This book has won many awards, two of which being the Scott O‘Dell Award and the Newbery Honor. This books follows three sisters who are visiting their mother in Oakland, California who abandoned them when they were younger. This book is set in the summer of 1968. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin The ESOL strategy I would use for this novel is 6 (continually monitor students‘ comprehension). This would be good for this LC book because you can see how the student is interacting with their group and monitor their comprehension through that. The UDL principle I would use is 8.3 (foster collaboration and community). Since this would be a LC novel, students collaborate with each other in their groups to facilitate comprehension and activities. 5y
katiehamlin Here is a link to a website that has essential questions for this book that I would incorporate into the lesson plan for a class grades 3-8. matchfishtank.org/curriculum/english-language-arts/5th-grade-literature/one-crazy-summer/ 5y
DrSpalding This is historical fiction at its best. It would work quite well in fifth grade as your resource shows. Books like this can foster collaboration and community amongst a diverse population. I learned so much about the 1960s and Black Panther movement from this book. It would be a helpful book to complement social studies instruction. 4y

This HF novel, One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia, makes for an amazing LC novel allowing for great discussions. It has won numerous awards, including the Scott O'Dell Award. It is about three sisters who travel to Oakland to spend their summer with their mother who had left them. They realize their mom is nothing they imagined her to be and their summer is not going to be spent at Disney but with the Black Panthers.

GroeningsC An activity to further discussion can be found here: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/videos/teaching-content/one-crazy-summer-boo.... This should be shown before beginning lit circles to promote interest in reading.
UDL principal 7.1 Optimize relevance, value and authenticity by showing this video and gaining interest.
EL 17 by showing the audio support before assigning the book. #UCFLAE3414F19

One Crazy Summer is both heartbreaking and a funny tale about three girls who travel to California in 1968 to spend the summer with their mother who abandoned them. One Crazy Summer has multiple awards including the Scott O‘dell Award, Newberry Award, National Book Award, and Coretta Scott King Award. #ucflae3414f19

Erinehart This is a book I would suggest for an IR for 4th or 5th grade class. A UDL strategy that could be used with this is to activate or supply background knowledge. This created higher level thinking for the student. https://b0f646cfbd7462424f7a-f9758a43fb7c33cc8adda0fd36101899.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.co... is a good resource for both teachers and students. It could be a great guide before and after reading. (edited) 5y
Erinehart An ESOL strategy I would is #43: have students underline or highlight key words or important facts while reading. 5y

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams Garcia is a HF Novel that takes you on a 1969 summer vacation of three “colored” girls during the time of the black lives matter civil rights movement. They are placed with their estranged mother who has a secret story all her own. The Author won the Newbery, Coretta Scott King, and Scott O‘Dell awards. This book is wonderful for 5th grade literature circles and cross concepts well with social studies.

Mary_Dehner Here is a link to a whole unit lesson for this book that is absolutely thorough. https://www.matchfishtank.org/curriculum/english-language-arts/5th-grade-literat... 5y
