Detective Esa Khattak heads up Canada's Community Policing Section, which handles minority-sensitive cases across all levels of law enforcement. Khattak is still under scrutiny for his last case, so he's surprised when INSET, Canada's national security team, calls him in on another politically sensitive issue. For months, INSET has been investigating a local terrorist cell which is planning an attack on New Year's Day. INSET had an informant, Mohsin Dar, undercover inside the cell. But now, just weeks before the attack, Mohsin has been murdered at the group's training camp deep in the woods. INSET wants Khattak to give the appearance of investigating Mohsin's death, and then to bury the lead. They can't risk exposing their operation, or Mohsin's role in it. But Khattak used to know Mohsin, and he knows he can't just let this murder slide. So Khattak sends his partner, Detective Rachel Getty, undercover into the unsuspecting mosque which houses the terrorist cell. As Rachel tentatively reaches out into the unfamiliar world of Islam, and begins developing relationships with the people of the mosque and the terrorist cell within it, the potential reasons for Mohsin's murder only seem to multiply, from the political and ideological to the intensely personal. "The Unquiet Dead" author Ausma Zehanat Khan once again dazzles in "The Language of Secrets," a brilliant mystery woven into a profound and intimate story of humanity.

I‘m really enjoying this series. It‘s really well-written! It‘s nice to see the blossoming friendship between Khattak and his partner, Getty. I also appreciated learning about different facets of Islam. #hoopla

Finished on audio today. Not sure why it took me so long to get back to this series, because I thought the first one was great. This was a great follow up, we learn more about both of the main characters, and the story was incredibly compelling.

Although this novel was not as compelling and powerful as her first, It was a good thriller. Ms. Khan‘s deep knowledge is again on display as her Detective Esa Khattak guides us through the actions of “those who rose to fill the vacuum of the deposed and despised, of the dialogue between civilizations, of the decades-long struggles for rights and democracy ...” (p. 272)

2nd one in the series and a good read 👍🏻 I‘m trying not to start any new series for a few months, so I‘ve downloaded the other two available in this series!

#Bookmail! I enjoyed the first book so much that I definitely wanted to keep reading Khan. I‘ve looked for her books in several stores and none of them seem to stock her. This makes me sad. 🙁 So, I ordered this online. Hooray! 🙂 I‘m trying to limit my book buying, so I didn‘t buy every single book she‘s written. Yet.

DGRachel I know. I was so upset when I went looking for her newest...none of the three Barnes & Noble stores near me had it and neither did my local indie. I ordered it online, too. 7y

Enjoyed this mystery - and the setting which is the area I live and work in so that was fun recognizing pubs and libraries etc. I struggled a bit because I had not read the first book in the series so was missing some back story that would probably be clearer from reading the first book...which I will be adding to my list now.

After a bad experience with Sue Grafton more than 20 years ago, I stopped doing #bingereads of authors and series, until this past July. In July and August, I binge read four authors and their various series. I think I'll still be cautious about the series and the number of books in a series that I'll binge, but these have been enjoyable and fun.

#AndItsAugust #day16 #Diversity These are four very diverse books which I've loved this year. Maus is a graphic novel written by Art Spiegelman about his fathers exoerience in Auschwitz, The Language of Secrets is about a Muslim detective in Canada, ACACO is about a cloned woman, her partner & an AI that's now in an android body & THUG is about a young black teenager who sees her best friend shot in front of her by police. 5⭐️ reads all.

A solid police procedural with well developed characters - being American, not Canadian, I had no idea it was inspired by actual events - the Toronto 18. AZK does an excellent job of combining real historical elements with fiction in a way that inspires the reader to look beyond the page and beyond themselves, to question their beliefs and prejudices. I cannot wait to start her next book.

#JubilantJuly #day19 #SophomoreNovels This is Ausma Zehanat Khan's sophomore novel & her follow up to The Unquiet Dead.Whilst not quite as great as her first,it was still a four star read for me.Her novels deal with the Muslim community in Canada,in the first novel, the Balkan states community, but in this one she brings together different nationalities who all have their faith in common. Esa Khattak, her main lead, is a great character to read.

Bk2 in the DI Esa Khattak series, was a solid effort after the fantastic first book, The Unquiet Dead. This one wasn't quite as good, but still a great read. I'm definitely getting my hands on Bk3.
Detective Esa Khattak is the head of the Community Policing Unit in Canada, looking into minority sensitive crime. When INSET, the federal police agency, ask his help on the murder of Mohsin Dar, a UC in a terrorist cell, he sends in Rachel Getty.

BibliophileMomma That's happened to me before with Amazon. What it was someone accidentally clicked delivered when it got to my local post office. It came the next day. 8y
DGRachel @Tiffy_Reads With Prime delivery, it was supposed to be at my house today, so someone screwed up. Either the postal carrier flat out misdelivered it (there is a street with a ridiculously similar name less than 1/2 mile away in the same neighborhood), or it was scanned as delivered to keep them out of trouble with Amazon thinking I wouldn't call until Monday by which time they'd have actually delivered (they've done that before) 8y
DGRachel I have another package due tomorrow. If they both don't show, I'll be raising hell in my post office in person on Monday. 😡 8y
Debiw781 I've had this happen a couple times. Thankfully either a neighbor brings it over or it shows up (late) in the mailbox a day or two later 8y
DGRachel @Debiw781 It still hasn't arrived. I called Amazon again and they contacted USPS who has started an investigation which is supposed to take 2-3 days. I'm disappointed in Amazon. They've gotten too big for their britches. In the old days, they would have sent me a new book the first time I called and I would have sent a copy back if/when the duplicate arrived. Now, I have to call back AGAIN tomorrow if the book still doesn't show. 😢😡 8y

The Language of Secrets by Ausma Zehanat Khan. The second in her Getty/Khattak series. The first novel had rather harrowing descriptions of the 1995 Srebrenicia massacre, and so while I enjoyed the mystery, I had to keep putting the book down and seeking psychological solace by hugging my dogs. This one was much less difficult to read in terms of the mental toll it exacted, and I'm looking forward to the third book. Originally posted on Instagram.

Enjoyed the 2nd mystery in this series with Detective Esa Khattak and his partner Detective Rachel Getty. I had a bit of a hard time accepting Rachel's ease at going undercover in the mosque harboring a terrorist cell, but I let that go and read on. Khan does a good job revealing the difficulties and judgments Khattak faces as family, faith and career issues come up. Rachel is a good character too with family issues of her own.
