But her artistic eye has failed her in one key area: helping her to design a love life thats more than make-believe. Then she finds a mysterious letter at an estate sale, and it sends her chasing down the loose ends of a movie icons hidden life. And along the way, she finds Ava, and at long last, Emis own hidden life begins to bloom.

This is a sweet f/f romance with a bit of mystery, a vulnerable and lovable MC, and a great behind the scenes look at set design for movies. My one quibble is how much older than her age Emi seems, living nearly independently and fully employed in the movies despite just graduating high school. I‘ve discovered that I love Jorjeana Marie narrating first person YA narrators. She lends the MC the little extra innocence she needs to add realism.

ShyBookOwl If I remember correctly, I had a similar quibble with another of this author's books, Watch Over Me. A recent HS graduate, but living independently as a live-in teacher. Might just be this author's thing lol 13mo
LeafingThroughLife @ShyBookOwl Guess so! That‘s a weird shtick, but I guess it all works in the end! 🙃 12mo

19/52: Everything Leads to You

I saw this on an “underrated books that should be on BookTok,” so I gave it a shot. I really loved this story. It was very well written and the characters were super loveable. Definitely associate this book with the song Looking out for You by the Joy Again.

1. Despite wanting to read only horror titles this month, I‘ve been reading the tagged book on and off for a while because I own it and it keeps getting put aside for borrowed items. I‘m really liking it so far, though!
2. Slither
3. I never know until I‘m standing in front of the fridge!

Joining the party late, but I‘ve loved reading everyone‘s posts, so I thought I‘d jump in. Here are #3books that I love. I picked some recent-ish reads, because my two all-time favorite reads fit multiple categories and I wanted to show some other books some love too.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve got to read Bernadette!! 4y
PerksOfBeingABookworm @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks you should!! The movie is fantastic too. Cate Blanchett totally nails the role of Bernadette. 4y

I‘m not sure why I have such fondness for this now-defunct attraction that used to reside in Disney‘s Hollywood Studios but I thought it might be fun to build a reading challenge around it.
The titles listed above are the movies in the order in which they appeared in the ride; I‘m choosing books that are either reminiscent of the plot or share settings, themes, etc. No time limit or rules, just have fun. #thegreatmovieridereadingchallenge

BookmarkTavern What a clever challenge! 👍🏻👍🏻 4y
ErikaB @ozma.of.oz Thank you! I think I first got the inspiration with the #itsasmallworld prompts that @CrowCAH posted a few months ago but I didn‘t have the time to participate in that one. I forgot to tag her on this when I originally posted. I‘ve got most of my books chosen, now I just have to find time to read them! 4y
CrowCAH @ErikaB I‘ll have to see what I can come up with! 4y
ErikaB @CrowCAH I look forward to it! And I got pretty creative with my title choices, so just make sure to have fun with it. 4y

This was a fast cute read. Characters were kind of 2 dimensional but it felt ok for what the story was about. Wish it could have been a little bit more realistic, however nice getaway from the thrillers I‘ve been reading, lighthearted and nothing too deep. For an easy read I would pick this.

This book gave me all the feels. I wasn‘t really expecting anything when I started it but by the end of it I was hit upside the head with the story and how great all the characters were. This author is great at pleasantly surprising me and I end up loving her books.

This was super cute. When I finally focused on it I flew through it. What‘s love without a little heartbreak and mystery? The behind the scenes look into movies was great too! It made a job I had never even thought about sound really interesting!!

BookishMarginalia The only thing that didn‘t ring true to me was the age of the protagonist. I think this was meant to be a new adult book that was changed to be a young adult book. 5y

Starting off Pride Month with a fun read. I couldn‘t put this down, actually read the whole book in one day. Some of the writing frustrated me, but I love the “behind the scenes” look into making movies and the story was engaging enough to keep me going.

This book was my least favorite of LaCour‘s books so far. I couldn‘t get past how unrealistic and easy things were. We‘re supposed to believe that these 18 year olds already have major responsibilities in the movie industry? And everything they try works out and every lead they follow is successful and they‘re independent? It just felt too easy. My favorite parts were describing the creativity that goes into movie making, especially set design.

My first time reading Nina Lacour, and I see the appeal! The romance had a nice balance between fluff and reality that I don‘t often find in YA. I had to suspend my disbelief about Emi becoming a set designer at 18, but I was fascinated by the passages about her work. I‘d like to find some more books about artistic direction in films, and I‘ll definitely be picking up more books by Nina Lacour! #queerbooks

Got this in a book swap & finally got a chance to read. Not so much read as flew through. A sweet story & a fun one as we learn more about these characters. There were times in the beginning were I felt like rolling my eyes & the main character seemed too perfect, but once I let go & just went with it, it turned into a really fun book. Fun romantic romp and a perfect escape read. Very happy I read this. Fun fact: the author lives in my hometown!

Day 23: Best Type of #Cliche - So #yalit always has these young people doing things that regular young people just don't do, i.e. 4,000 mile road trip with strangers (Let's Get Lost), anyone? Or how about big screen set design before you're even out of high school (Everything Leads to You)? Even though these teens are living "unrealistic" lives, it's still a lot of fun to read ... because really, #reallife is boring. #septinbooks17 #bookishtropes

Two books, that I've read this year, that I really enjoyed are Nina LaCour's "Everything Leads to You", which has a f/f romance and "Radio Silence" by Alice Oseman, which has a bisexual and biracial protagonist and demisexual, gay, and lesbian rep. LOVED these books so much. ??

This was really good! It was nice to read a W|W love story that wasn't a coming out story. I also loved that the main character was a production designer because that was really interesting to learn about. The narrative was uneven at time and I would have liked more insight into Ava and her motives, but still super good!

MrBook Nice review! 👍🏻 7y
