Funny book about a woman whose family moved to California from Iran. It‘s obvious that Firoozah loves her parents even if they sometimes drive her nuts. One of my favorite parts was when her father said he was going with a friend or relative for dinner. Firoozah didn‘t think there was a restaurant there. She found out their “dinner” was free samples. Her stories about being an immigrant in school were pretty funny too.

My 12yo son was assigned this book as summer reading - and I could hear him laughing as he read. The author IS funny and even more so when you read the memoir aloud. Each chapter touches a theme: extended family, food, holidays, summer camp, first jobs, translating names into English, weddings, Disneyland. It‘s all in there. I needed something light to push out the darkness of our world, and this memoir reaffirmed that we‘re all in this together.

This was funny, warm, and delightful. If you‘re looking for something a little lighter and haven‘t read this, I highly recommend it.

I got more than a few chuckles when u read these books.

This collection of stories are really engaging & amusing. I enjoyed reading about her family & relatives, their lives in Iran, & how they adjusted to different culture when the family moved to California in 1972. Also great insight into the Iranian culture. I smiled, tittered, so many times, & even laughed out once or twice. There were a few serious moments but overall Firoozeh kept things light & entertaining.

Finding the fun in culture clash and the humor in miscommunications made this memoir of an Iranian immigrant to the US a joy to read. I found myself smiling wryly to LOLing as these stories progress from her first experiences in the US as a child, to a young adult after the Iranian revolution, to her adulthood dating another transplant with a very different experience, all the way through the afterword with her parents reaction to this book.

Sounds good to me! 😂.

A delight. Dumas's story begins in the early '70s when her family first travels to the US, but continues over the years, as the world changes (becoming more hostile to Iranians), her family immigrates to the US, she grows up & gets married. Her stories of cultural differences, family adventures, & experiences of growing up, as the title promises, are full of humor. They are also filled w/love & warmth, making me want to know her & her family.

Celebrating the fact that I finished one row on the #nonfiction2019 bingo card with the tagged book which marked off the "something from another country" as she writes about their life in Iran and then in the US.

Had the audiobook of this and enjoyed the author's narration of it as she does her family's accents 😂😂

This is a great #audiobook. Funny, touching, short. Kind of a female, Persian David Sedaris. Perfect pick-me-up! 👌🏻 I hope you feel better soon.

1/ While not laugh-out-loud funny, Funny in Farsi is still funny.
2/ I swam 2800 yards; it‘s been a long time since I‘ve done that. 🏊🏻‍♂️

This is a fantastic memoir about growing up Iranian in America both before and after the revolution. It‘s non-chronological essays in a style similar to David Sedaris. I enjoy all manner of books by immigrants, but sometimes you just need a funny one, especially now.

The narration is excellent, and I‘m considering purchasing her second book from #audible. 4.5⭐️

I‘m loving this! I decided to try something funny I had not read. This is been on my TBR for at least two years! She has a really great voice and fantastic comedic timing!

Super engaging and funny memoir from a woman who grew up as an immigrant from Iran in a time when this started to become tough. I really liked her humor and honesty. Such a strong voice and a lot of really interesting things in this book!

Dumas has some pretty interesting stories to tell, but I think I went into it expecting something more LOL and it just wasn't like that for me.

To learn more about the Iranian culture and the immigrant experience in the USA, this is still very interesting and entertaining and definitely worth your time.

I changed my rating now from 4 to 3 and back to 4 stars...

If you really want to find out more information about the Iranian people and our rich culture, I highly recommend it.

This is a collection of lighthearted essays about her family‘s move in 1972 from Iran to Southern California. Dumas writes about how her father‘s decision to take a two year consulting gig in California impacted the family and her view of the world. Most of the vignettes are quirky and fun.There are some about the family‘s experiences during the Iranian hostage crisis that explore issues of xenophobia and cross-cultural misunderstandings.

I've been too busy to finish all the prompts for the second quarter of #booked2018 . I'm still working on A Walk in the Woods for nature prompt but I know I won't finish it today. Better luck next time. My favorite read was The Animators.

This comedy book is about the life of a girl who traveled with her family to USA and she tells funny stories about how people treat to Iranian people. Give it a try. It might change your opinion either.

I listened to this audiobook narrated by the author in its entirety today. I had hoped for something as entertaining as Born a Crime, but was disappointed. There are some interesting anecdotes and a few laugh out loud moments, but the author‘s voice got on my nerves.

Trying to get through some of my backlist/#tbr and clear out my bookshelf! I got this for $1 at my library bookstore, and it‘s charming and funny. I‘ll probably keep this book since I‘m enjoying it so much. There goes my plan of spring cleaning my shelves...😵 #litsyatoz

This was such a fun book, narrated by the author. I loved learning about Persian culture and the stories about her parents, and especially her father, were poignant and funny. Definitely recommend!

Between a Pick and So-So. I liked it. It was engaging. She's a good storyteller.

Enjoying this audio book about the author's life.

I‘m really enjoying the audio version of this memoir, which is funny with a touch of sadness. The author first moved to the US with her family for two years before the Iranian revolution; when she moved back to the US after the Iranian revolution, she encountered a much less kind America. The author does a very nice job narrating her story. Unrelated note: it was almost hot outside today! #audiowalk

Firoozeh Dumas' memoir about growing up Iranian in California is a lighthearted look at her 1970s and 80s immigrant experience. She does discuss her perspective on the Iranian Revolution and the hostage crisis, which affected her family financially and otherwise. But mostly, she tells stories about her dad's quirks and the joys of a big, international family. Narrated well by the author.

I spent the morning listening and knitting. Loved this memoir and remembered that I had a middle grade book about the Iranian experience in the US. I was pleasantly surprised to discover it was by the same author! (These things happen when you only remember titles. 😕)

I'll be finishing up this audiobook on my way home today. It's amusing, her family stories are great! Takes place partially in Iran and partially in the US. #setinthemiddleeast #maybookflowers

I just started this audiobook. It's pretty fun so far. Has anyone else read it?

This book was fantastic. I laughed out loud several times. I LOVE these family stories of crazy relatives and crazier immediate family. Firoozeh Dumas reads the book and is great. Her comedic timing in writing and reading was spot on. Highly recommended!
