3/3.5 ⭐️ - a quick read of the source material (revised from the original publication) for the Julie Andrews adventure I grew up enjoying. Reading this made me want to check out Saving Mr. Banks…

26 Jul-6 Aug (audiobook)
One cannot listen to this without recalling Saving Mr Banks and PL Travers‘ reaction to the Disneyfied film. I do love both but they are so very different.
This is a far less saccharine version and it is quite difficult to see why the children loved Mary Poppins so much. Beatrix could not work it out - she continued to wait for her to become nicer.

So I'm currently challenging myself to read stephen Kings IT . Normally I stick to books around 300 pages , however I found I couldn't read IT before bed as I was finding it to disturbing, so decided to use the time to read through some of my shorter books . Mary Poppins was such a cute read to start with . Full of magic and wonder 🥰 4 stars for me . Quick easy to follow and nostalgic

That was a really fun audiobook to listen to. The narrator, Sophie Thompson, is a star. So great. I thought it was strange in the movies that Mary Poppins is vain and haughty, but she really is that in the books. Way more adventures in the book than they get into in the movie. Also interesting that Jane and Michael actually have two younger twin siblings, Barbara and John. Fun story, I recommend beyond just seeing the movies.

I feel a bit ashamed, but I did not love this. 😣I didn't mind a haughty, clipped, vain Mary Poppins. I enjoyed that! But I find episodic children's books a bit annoying (a trip to the store, a trip to the zoo, and so on). And the talking animals were annoying, too. This is one of those rare times where I much prefer the movie to the book.

mandarchy I accidently downloaded the series to my kindle instead of the one book. She's creepy. 2y
mandarchy Oops. I didn't mean to send yet. Being stubborn I read it all and cannot see why the book was ever appealing. It gets creepy and dark, but not enough. It too much if you are expecting Disney. 2y
mom2bugnbee Agreed. One can see why P.L. Travers was not thrilled with the movie, because it's very unlike the book. Apologies to Ms. Travers, but the movie is FAR superior. 2y
merelybookish @mandarchy You read the whole series? I'm impressed! Interesting they it gets creepy. Do they all have the same episodic as the first? 2y
merelybookish @mom2bugnbee I don't often like Disneyfied retellings but I do in this case! 2y

Is it just me or is Mary Poppins, the character, a little vain and rude? I don‘t really understand why the children in the book love her except that odd things happen when she is around. Overall though, I enjoyed the stories in the book.

DrexEdit Oh yes. More than a little I would say! But I think the children like her despite her gruff manner because she gives then adventures. 2y

"He leant upon the chopping-block and gazed admiringly at Mary Poppins.
"In a Nurry?"he said to Mary Poppins "l'd hoped you'd dropped in for a bit of a chat. We butchers, you know, like a bit of company. And we don't often get the chance of talking to a nice, handsome young lady like you" He broke off suddenly, for he had caught sight of Mary Poppins face. The expression on it was awful"

"Where have you been?"they asked her
"In Fairyland"said Mary Poppins
"Did you see Cinderella?"said Jen
"Huh Cinderella,not me!"said Mary Poppins contemptuously."Cinderella, indeed!
"Or Robinson Crusoe?"said Michael
"Robinson Crusoe-pooh"said Mary Poppins rudely
"Then how could you have been there? It couldn't have been our Fairyland!"
Mary Poppins gave a superior sniff.
"Don't you know"she said pityingly"that everyone has a Fairyland of their own?"

The story of the well known nanny who helps raise the Banks children - until the wind changes direction.

I think perhaps my mistake was expecting the book to resemble more of the Disney classic. Unexpected surprises such as there being four children rather than two and the trip to the zoo full of animals who could speak were fun and welcome.

However, I found Mary Poppins to be much colder in this book, which I did not really appreciate.

Prairiegirl_reading If you haven‘t seen the film saving mr banks it might interest you. It‘s about her life and the making of the movie. 3y

I rarely enjoy children‘s classics much, as a kid I was convinced they were stuffy and I took against them all, but this was magical and I absolutely loved it. Olivia Coleman was a phenomenal narrator and I honestly could have read this for ten times as long. If and when I ever have a kid I will absolutely be reading them this.

I really enjoyed this. I remember a co-worker once telling me that Mary Poppins isn't nice in the books, like she is in the movie. At first I thought that was open to interpretation, but throughout the book it was proven true. I would like to re-watch the movie though, as it's probably been a couple of decades (at least) since I've seen it.

I read this book once in elementary school and haven‘t read it since. But I decided to give it a go and I was pleasantly surprised. What I liked most was how different the book and movie versions of Mary Poppins are. The book version of Mary Poppins was vain and slightly rude. The movie Mary Poppins is more prim & proper. Rating: 4⭐️.

🎧 Thank you free Hoopla! Last freebie. First book in the series. Well it‘s a little darker than the movie for sure! Follows much of the movie but no singing. If you could find the illustrated hardcover I think it would make a great family read otherwise 10-12 years old. #BookChat Question!
If you could read a story from another character‘s perspective, what would you choose?

I‘ve always wanted to know Mary Poppins‘ thoughts throughout this book. She comes across as relatively harsh, but I want to know how she experiences the magic constantly surrounding her. How about you?

So disappointing. A rare case where I enjoyed the movie more than the book. There is a good magical component & good imagination, but I had a hard time connecting. The chapters act as short stories rather than a continuing tale. The worst thing was that I really did not like Mary Poppins herself. She is grumpy, short with the children, & quite standoffish. Had she been more like the Disney version, I likely would have enjoyed the book more.

Listened to this on audio. It was okay. Honestly,
not much like the movie. I liked the movie better.

The book was okay. Mary Poppins was kind of a bitch. Basically made the kids seem like they were stupid and crazy.

I was starting to get in an audiobook slump, which is why I read a children‘s book.

A surprising book, as I had only seen the movies, and this Mary Poppins is quite different. She is a lot more “human” and with foibles and not as nice as Julie Andrews. It‘s written as a series of vignettes which has led to a easy script for movies.
