The Vine Witch
The Vine Witch | Luanne G. Smith
A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France. For centuries, the vineyards at Chteau Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcire Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger. Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn't endorse the locals' belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she'll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won't rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

Another reread for the beginning of the year. I really liked the premise, but the weird law story thrown in at the 75% mark always sends me for a loop. After I finish my current work read, I‘ll probably look into the sequels.

I think the biggest problem with this book is that it wasn‘t long enough. The vine magic (and magic in general) was interesting but not very flushed out. It felt like I was dropped into a magical world I was already supposed to understand.
The romantic plot was also unsatisfying. They went from being suspicious and hate to in love with little time spent on how they got there. It basically happened during a 3 month time skip.

This was a fun book. I loved it 💚
It starts out as Elena a vine witch, is coming out of a curse; she was a toad for seven years. She heads back to her home a vineyard in France only to find out that the vineyard was sold to a new owner who doesn't believe in witchcraft.

Paranormal and fantasy elements combined to create a story of redemption and discovery. Elena has a long road to once again reach her potential. Along the way she'll have to build trust with Jean-Paul, both with magic and herself. The relationship building was skillfully done, allowing the characters time to address their feelings and maturely approach them.

A headache most of of the day had me finishing this one. I enjoyed it—the idea of vine witches in France, responsible for the quality & taste of the wines & there were spells & treachery & some romance thrown in. Happy to see one of the supporting characters I especially liked is in the next book. Not sure what #LittenListen square I‘ll use for it for yet

I truly enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the story in this one. There were some twists I saw coming and others I didn‘t, so, overall, I wouldn‘t say the events are too predictable. The concept of vine witches is also original and very interesting. I can‘t wait to read the sequel!

This was a somewhat interesting story, but then the ending didn't really make sense based on the rest of the story. I thought the story was going to be more about the vineyards, rather than random feuds between witches.

julesG 😂😂😂 I can so relate. I hate seemingly endless purl rounds. I swear, every purl round/row has twice as many stitches as the knit rows. 4y
blithebuoyant @julesG TRUTH and I do Norwegian purl so it‘s a liiiiiitle less time consuming to work purl after purl without all the yarning forward and backward but still not great 😂 4y
julesG Norwegian purl? I have to find a video. Maybe that's what I'm doing. Anyway, I do variant 2 explained on this page. Way faster. https://www.smart-knit-crocheting.com/purl-stitch.html 4y
julesG What I do is called combined continental. And I'd venture it's faster than Norwegian purl. 4y

julesG Best of luck! Let me know how it goes. 4y

I was iffy on this, and then at 25% it ran headfirst into one of my biggest bookish pet peeves. It‘s too bad; the writing wasn‘t great and I rolled my eyes a lot (especially at the Wiccan terminology being used… you‘re about fifty years too early, folks), but I really liked the way the magic was portrayed.

MidnightBookGirl You know I have to ask you what bookish pet peeve it committed! 4y
Clare-Dragonfly @MidnightBookGirl The problem is, it‘s so hard to explain to other people! It‘s when the POV character explicitly indicates that they have knowledge but keeps it from the reader. In this case, the characters are having a polite chat and the bad guy goes “and I have a proposition for you!” It says he gave his proposition, but the reader doesn‘t see it, just the reaction. And end scene, cut to new POV. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 4y

The premise here is enticing: vineyards cultivated by witches using magic, 1920's rural France, culture clash between a new human vineyard owner who trusts science and the witches who have tended the wine for generations, a murder mystery and revenge plot. Alas, the execution lacks. The author does a lot of telling vs. showing, and parts are overwritten/overwrought. The romance part is very weakly developed. I didn't enjoy this one.

I listened to Luanne G. Smith's The Vine Witch via Kindle Unlimited (I did take advantage of whispersync to read a little bit by Kindle) kind of on a whim. I hadn't heard much about it, but I liked the cover, and the description was intriguing. What a great read!⠀

At its center, the novel is about vine witches (hence the title!), women in the Chanceaux Valley of France who have a talent for nurturing vineyards to create the most amazing wine. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Vine witch Elena Boureanu has been ousted from her vineyard by a curse that placed in her in the body of a toad for seven years. When she escapes her curse and returns to Château Renard, she finds that Jean-Paul Martel has purchased the vineyard . . . and outlawed any talk of vine witches. Elena's goals are, then, twofold: seeking revenge on her ex-fiance, who orchestrated the curse, and finding a way to take her place again at Château Renard. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod The style of The Vine Witch is just lovely--Smith builds a vivid world with the supernatural lurking just beneath the surface. The historical details result in great world building, and Elena is a strong, complex, compelling protagonist.⠀

Has anyone read this one? Any good Kindle Unlimited recs I should check out?
