You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine
You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine: A Novel | Alexandra Kleeman
A woman known only as A lives in an unnamed American city with her roommate, B, and boyfriend, C, who wants her to join him on a reality dating show called That's My Partner! A eats mostly popsicles and oranges, watches endless amounts of television, often just for the commercials particularly the recurring cartoon escapades of Kandy Kat, the mascot for an entirely chemical dessertand models herself on a standard of beauty that exists only in such advertising. She fixates on the fifteen minutes of fame a local celebrity named Michael has earned after buying up a Wally's Supermarket's entire, and increasingly ample, supply of veal.Meanwhile, B is attempting to make herself a twin of A, who in turn hungers for something to give meaning to her life, something aside from C's pornography addiction. Maybe something like what's gotten into her neighbors across the street, the family who's begun "ghosting" themselves beneath white sheets and whose garage door features a strange scrawl of graffiti: he who sits next to me, may we eat as one.An intelligent and madly entertaining novel reminiscent of The Crying of Lot 49, White Noise, and City of Glass, Alexandra Kleeman's unforgettable debut is a missing-person mystery told from the point of view of the missing person; an American horror story that concerns sex and friendship, consumption and appetite, faith and transformation, real food and reality television; and, above all, a wholly singular vision of modern womanhood by a frightening, "stunning" (Conjunctions), and often very funny voice of a new generation.

#2022Book87
I liked the disjointed narration of this book, because it gave a better look at the narrator‘s rapidly declining mental health. I‘m probably going to re-read it at some point as a physical book, though, because I think I missed some important elements by listening to the audio version.

Reading this book was like watching athletes warm up, when you‘re really here for a good game. You see the potential, but it‘s just not happening.
I had high hopes for this. There is so much praise for it.
But I just couldn‘t attach to it.
And I have too many other books to read 💁🏻‍♀️

Megabooks I bailed on this too. 2y

Warehouses where stock sits silent, the dark interior of a Mickey Mouse costume, the caves of hibernating bears. I imagined the great diffuse blandness of these spaces, soft and dark like a concussion, and I closed my eyes and rolled myself over into the dim center of sleep."

Weird and experimental. While I appreciate the layers to this novel, I didn't really enjoy it very much. I think having a post read discussion with someone who has also read it would improve the overall experience, for this reason it would probably make a good book club pick.
I enjoyed the idea of consumption; what we choose to consume and allow to consume us. This book is heavy on metaphor and takes a satirical look at modern western culture.

Sweettartlaura In my opinion, Margaret Atwood addresses this issue better in The Edible Woman. It‘s also a much more impressive debut 🤷🏻‍♀️. If you haven‘t read it, try it - I think you‘ll like it. 2y

I enjoyed this book. I think it goes off the rails and gets a bit to broad even for satire in the last third, but I will give Ms Kleeman‘s next book a read. She has a unique voice and is sometimes too funny for her own good, but I‘d recommend this book.

Today I was overcome with the immediate need to drop everything and read this book again. It‘s my favorite book of 2015, just an absolutely brilliant, bananapants novel. I could talk about it until your faces melted off, because I love it with the heat of a thousand suns. Ain‘t reading grand? 🧡💛💙

It's not a super-easy read... and that's fine, but we could have reached the same point in about half the time. Once you forgo plot and you're more about satirizing consumerism, religion, the patriarchy and so forth, I'm not sure you need quite as many pages retelling the same things. I just felt that less, might have been more... which may have been part of the satire on unnecessary consumption, but is more likely to have just been poor editing.

Alexandra Keleeman‘s satire is a bold statement on modern life. She tackles consumerism, conformity, and the importance of the individual in an over-marketed world. What follows is an examination of the self, or lack of self, in an overly consumptive society.

8little_paws How do you think this would be on audio? 8y
Lacythebookworm @8little_paws I tend to prefer non-fiction, mysteries, and more plot driven novels on audio, so I don't think it would work for me. I listened to the audio sample and I liked the narrator, so you might give it a try! What do you generally like on audio? 8y

8little_paws @Lacythebookworm it really depends on what I'm doing. I can focus the best when I'm listening while knitting. Maybe this is a good book for that purpose. The only thing I really dislike on audio is short stories. I'd rather read those in print. 8y

Finished this two days ago but haven't had time to review. @LBApple and I bought copies at #BKBF - we were intrigued by Vogue's declaration that it's "Fight Club for girls." I take issue with the "for girls" part, but wish I hadn't seen the blurb because it influenced my expectations of the novel. I still enjoyed it (a lot), but I kept looking for links to FC. Overall, brilliant work of hysterical realism about identity in a consumerist culture.

Marchpane I'm lucky that I read it without seeing the Fight Club comparison - it makes zero sense! 8y
katedensen @Marchpane I kept thinking that B was a Tyler Durden to A's narrator. Which was a stretch, but I couldn't get it out of my head 😣 8y
Marchpane Oh no! I can definitely see how you would have that expectation. It's been so long since I read it, I can't remember enough details to know if that interpretation would hold up? 8y
katedensen @Marchpane I think it does a bit in terms of A never putting B and C in the same room and A's feeling that B is trying to Single White Female her. 8y
