Feminist Fight Club
Feminist Fight Club: An Office Survival Manual for a Sexist Workplace | Jessica Bennett
Part manual, part manifesto, a humorous yet incisive guide to navigating subtle sexism at worka pocketbook Lean In for the Buzzfeed generation that provides real-life career advice and humorous reinforcement for a new generation of professional women. It was a fight clubbut without the fighting and without the men. Every month, the women would huddle in a friends apartment to share sexist job frustrations and trade tips for how best to tackle them. Once upon a time, you might have called them a consciousness-raising group. But the problems of todays working world are more subtle, less pronounced, harder to identifyand, if Ellen Pao is any indication, harder to provethan those of their foremothers. These women werent just there to vent. They needed battle tactics. And so the fight club was born. Hard-hitting and entertaining, Feminist Fight Club blends personal stories with research, statistics, infographics, and no-bullsh*t expert advice. Bennett offers a new vocabulary for the sexist workplace archetypes women encounter everydaysuch as the Manterrupter who talks over female colleagues in meetings or the Himitator who appropriates their ideasand provides practical hacks for navigating other gender landmines in todays working world. With original illustrations, Feminist Mad Libs, a Negotiation Cheat Sheet, as well as fascinating historical research and a kit for How to Start Your Own Club, Feminist Fight Club tackles both the external (sexist) and internal (self-sabotaging) behaviors that plague todays womenas well as the system that perpetuates them.

Love this book. It‘s an easy and quick read, and should absolutely be a must read for young women. I learned and laughed through it, and my favourite quote from the whole book is «Carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man.»

A quick read/listen, this book is both a helpful tool for making your way through a sexist workplace and a reminder to stand up for yourself AND support other women. Good humored, useful, and practical. I‘m glad I listened to it—it boosted my mood for sure.

There was so much packed into this book and it was all very interesting and useful. I definitely feel like I will carry a lot of the ideas of this book with me and try to work on areas the author discussed. Some of it was a little over the top for my taste, but I learned a lot from this book and enjoyed it.

While I think this was a well intentioned book that had some really good insights, much of it read as a self help book for privileged white feminists. Tons of research to back up everything though. But still a lot of points in this book can only benefit women in higher work positions.

arlenefinnigan Yup. Bailed for that same reason. 7y

Quick and fun read, even if much of it felt like stuff I've already read elsewhere. Plus, worth it for the archetypical office white dude, Josh.

How do you feel about anti feminist writings? I'm reading a book right now that is not intended to be that but is given the cultural reference it comes from. The book is making me incredibly frustrated and angry. Any ideas on ways to get through it without bailing?

josie281 I trudge. I attempt to understand their (ass backward) POV. Good luck!! 7y
hongim I would make myself finish it. But I think I would struggle on this kind of book. So I will not try reading it. Otherwise it would cut into the good books I have! 7y
BethM @hongim right?! But it's my Litsy goes postal book so I feel like I should finish. It's really not my thing though. 7y

Bailedbailed

Had to bail on this,it just wasn't for me. It felt like it was talking about specific roles in a specific type of workplace and was aimed at more ambitious people aiming to impress in high flying business meetings, which really isn't something I can relate to. The "woo! Sisterhood!" tone wasn't my cup of tea either.

Bit of a weird read being currently employed only as a mom but full of great tips for a variety of situations in an office environment. I didn't super love the slangy, bantery presentation of the material as it limits the audience who will take it seriously. The list of feminist groups at the end was fascinating! #mommyreads #ebook #nonfiction #business

Feeling very conflicted about this book. It was fun in many ways, like with this list of #feminist cocktails...but I also felt like it could have been a bit more nuanced in some parts. It focuses a lot on overtly "masculine" situations or jobs and I felt as it is neglected talking about other workplace dynamics and professions that may be female dominated or oriented and how that element can influence women at work. Ok, just not brilliant.

If you have never picked up a pick about sexism in the workplace and how to conquer it, this book would be your perfect first read. For everyone that has already worked their way through feminist nonfiction this book is not going to be life changing. I think it's organized really nicely and informal language and to the point graphs are being employed. I also liked that the author consistently pointed out the added hurdles for women of color.

I found this to be true... I was told in anonymous reviews that I lacked empathy... but only by a fraction of my team. I decided to follow my path and due to other factors some team dynamics changed and this topic went away all by itself.

TrishB I've had brilliant bosses and crap bosses, as we probably all have, I don't think the good or bad was influenced by gender. However, I do agree that people do seem to judge women more harshly! 8y

I enjoyed this! Although I'm not a "career" person and don't work in an office currently, the sexism pointed out in the book is (obviously) around us always. I liked the illustrations and the puns. Skims the surface of race and trans* issues and is focused on white collar jobs, so a bit of white affluence privilege throughout. ??????1/2

Devastated doesn't even begin to cover it. But I felt inspired by @LauraBeth and her comment about getting involved--if this election has taught me anything, it's that nothing can be taken for granted. We need to shape our world into the one we want it to be. I signed up for a mentorship program for girls at under-resourced schools because I refuse to live in a world where girls think they have limits. Let's show the world what we can do.

LauraBeth How awesome ❤️❤️ you go show those sweet girls how much they matter and that they have zero limits 😀💪 8y
