panI needed a book for #DR and already had this one, so I tried to approach it without focusing on the sexual misconduct allegations against the author. But the deep seeded misogyny and treatment of women as objects to be used made that impossible. Which is too bad, because there is also some good stuff in here, but it‘s much harder to see.

Book club pick for March. I voted for this one so I‘m hoping it‘s good!
so-soI read this in 2022. The synopsis interested me a lot but it wasn't the case with the actual book. I didn't like the protagonist and his thought process but the pace kept me going. I liked how all the stories were interrelated. Also, I really enjoyed a few quotes here and there. Overall, a quick read but not a must one.

so-soAs others have said, every single man in this book is an absolute asshole through and through. Since this book is apparently semi-autobiographical, I am fine never reading another word of his work.
so-soI accidentally stole this book when I thought it was left out for the taking and later learned it wasn‘t. I finally read it to see if Diaz being an asshole is visible through his work. It is.

I prefer the expansive, family epic of Oscar Wao more, but this collection was still very good. A few very well done pieces in here.. my heart breaks for some of these characters.
panThis is the only Díaz I‘ve read besides Oscar Wao and I am conflicted. He‘s a talented writer for sure, but the way he writes about women coupled with the sexual misconduct violations a while back (which MIT cleared him of, to be fair) make me uncomfortable. Women aren‘t objects. Men are more than sexual desire. But all this book does is preach the opposite for 213 pages. ⭐️⭐️ Book 10/12 for #bfc28
Even though I'm still working on The Road, I hit the library on the way home yesterday because the #CDaudiobook of another book on my #LatinxAuthors #SeptemberTBR list was there, and I figured I could probably knock it out this week just keeping it in my car for the #audiocommute, which has the double advantage of not giving me the chance to keep forgetting it at home long past the due date!
pickThis is a quick read made up of vignettes of breakups. It‘s entertaining, I like the author‘s style of mixing Spanish and English. The characters are mostly immigrants or from immigrant families from the Dominican Republic.
Even though it‘s quick, it‘s not a fun or happy book. Here‘s a huge piece of advice to all the characters: if you cheat, it will probably end your relationship. I‘m not sure how these guys kept being surprised by that...
My boys Froedrick And Igor with my evening read. This is a really fast read, and the mixed in Spanish is fun, even though I don‘t speak it, I‘m finding meanings pretty easy to guess.
pickThis was a quick read, which I am thankful for. The story moves quickly and I really enjoyed the first two and the last two portions of the story. The middle kind of loses momentum for me. In typical Diaz style the story is told with a little Spanish sprinkled in which I really enjoy but unlike the other novels it loses me somewhere in the middle, the voidlce of the narrator changes . However I would recommend this as a quick post breakup read.

Hour 8.5 of #24in48 and second book finished. I‘m not sure I get the hype? I enjoyed the interconnectedness of the stories, but really found the shitty dialogue about women tiring.
So I read this Díaz (tagged) in 2012 and didn‘t like it because the men were so misogynistic, and now in light of the accusations against Díaz it feels extra icky. Oscar Wao has been on my TBR for ages and I recently bought the Lin-Manuel Miranda audiobook, but now I‘m struggling with whether or not I should read it. It‘s a modern classic, but I‘m thinking about returning it and buying one of his accuser‘s books instead. ⬇️

pickThis hovers between pick and so-so for me. Diaz is an excellent writer but his female characters aren‘t that memorable as distinct individuals and the men are all cheaters. The main character in all the stories (except one) realizes this cheating is a problem but does nothing to change. I could also have lived without some of the crudeness when women and sex are described.
Junot Diaz was my beach reading today. It‘s next up in my Common Read reading.
These are the other books being considered for the Common Read. Because our books for the last three years have dealt with issues of race, I‘m hoping this year, we choose one that addresses another issue. I‘m pulling for So You‘ve Been Publicly Shamed.
This is a #new book (for me, anyways) that I picked up at a used bookstore this week. I couldn‘t pass up the beautiful illustrated edition and it‘s been on my TBR for a while 🤗

"The half-life of love is forever." This is one of the boldest book I've read this year. The protagonist leaves a lasting impression. And it's certainly the only book I had to religiously use Google Translate.

#wrforecast paired with what I'm currently reading that has me thinking men are douche-nozzles. The writing is wonderful, but holy cow these men make poor choices!
This was the first short story collection I ever read, and its themes of #lostloves, being different and family gripped me from the beginning. The stories feel connected, as they almost all have the same MC. This cohesiveness made it easier for me to get into the stories, as they felt like chapters of a novel, all jumbled together. I would like to read more by Diaz some day, but till then, I am glad to have this on my shelves.

pickThis was the first book of Diaz's that I have read and I find his style to be very unique. The main character was not very loveable which made the reading off-putting at times given his seeming lack of respect for women. Overall a very enjoyable read, I recommend this 📚!

pickJunot Diaz is an incredible writer and it was really enjoyable to hear him reading this book. I didn't love this book as much as The Brief and Wonderous. . .I think because Yunior, the narrator, disrespect for women "bitches, hos and sluts" got a little tiring. I recognize that Diaz is not valourizing that position, quite to opposite, but it wore on me all the same. I did still enjoy this book, though. One of the best book titles EVER!! Gorgeous!

Sooo, I signed up for my first @DeweysReadathon ever! I got (short) novels, novellas, short stories and comics, different authors, different periods, different styles and different languages. All under 250 pages. Maybe I should stack some essays, too. I'm hoping to trick my brain into keeping focus by mixing and switching tracks...

I finished this book last night, and my feelings about it are too complex - and not fully solidified - to give a simple pick-or-pan rating. Diaz earns his laurels as a deft, beautiful writer, and I love the way these stories become the outline of a life... but the sexism and misogyny that form the thematic arc of Yunior's story are so brazen and unapologetic as to be upsetting throughout. 👇
