From New York Times bestselling author comes a world packed with action and adventure, perfect for fans of Rick Riordan and Soman Chainani.MEET KIRANMALA: INTERDIMENSIONAL DEMON SLAYER(Only she doesn't know it yet.)On the morning of her 12th birthday, Kiranmala is just a regular sixth grader living in Parsippany, New Jersey...until her parents mysteriously vanish and a drooling rakkhosh demon slams through her kitchen, determined to eat her alive. Turns out there might be some truth to her parents' fantastical stories -- like how Kiranmala is a real Indian princess and how she comes from a secret place not of this world. To complicate matters, two crush-worthy princes ring her doorbell, insisting they've come to rescue her. Suddenly, Kiran is swept into another dimension full of magic, winged horses, moving maps, and annoying, talking birds. There she must solve riddles and battle demons all while avoiding the Serpent King of the underworld and the Rakkhoshi Queen in order to find her parents and basically save New Jersey, her entire world, and everything beyond it...

A possibility for a 4-6 grade summer book club choice, but I think it leans more toward 5/6 grade and might be a little much for a rising 4th grader. I do love that it‘s diverse, drawing from traditional folktales from West Bengal, India with a female led character (and male side-kick). High adventure and ties in with our summer reading theme. I‘ll ponder this one a while 🤔

Enjoyed it very much, especially since it had diverse characters. It‘s about embracing who you truly are, inside and out. The author shared that this story was inspired and has bits and pieces of folktales and children‘s stories from West Bengali, India. I love that, it‘s new and refreshing to have stories with elements from a culture that is not commonly heard/read about. Definitely a great middle grade read. Off to the 2nd book in the series!

I couldn‘t stick to a book, I just kept on jumping from book to book. “It wasn‘t like one of those scenes in a movie, where the princess floats lightly into the waiting hero‘s arms. I was more like an anvil that comes plummeting down on a cartoon character‘s head. I fell, like a graceful barbell, right on top of Neel.”

😆 made me chuckle.

I‘ll be starting this one today. I‘ve been such a scattered brain reader this month. 😔 I‘ve been jumping from book to book and I can‘t stick with one. It‘s not that the books aren‘t good, it‘s just that I can‘t just finish it for some reason.

I‘m also a sucker, because even though I have plenty of stamps at home I just had to get these! Bookish stamps are the best! 😁

I have moved into my first (renting) home and rooming with two friends, been organizing everything and finding a place for my books, and the first full week back at Clift Library has finished! i will share my bookcase, reading spot, and Bookish artwork when I finish getting the prints on the walls 💙

I've also decided I don't care if all I ever read again is middle grade books. I don't need to impress anyone with my reading choices.

alisiakae I love middle grade! 6y
Lindy I like to read at least one middle grade a month. About to start one that‘s been on my TBR for years: 6y
Jen_Reads Middle grade has some of the best books!! 6y
Sace @Jen_Reads @4thhouseontheleft @Lindy I find myself only wanting to read middle grade. Teaching can be so mentally exhausting (especially when the state has taken over and the district is going through accreditation) and I don't want anything overly taxing when I read. 6y

I'm on a quest to find some appropriate audiobooks for a road trip with my nieces (8 and 11) in July. I want something exciting/interesting for both of them. The older one loves fantasy (she's making her way through HP atm), but the younger of the 2 can be sensitive with monsters, ghosts, etc. I've got a couple ideas, but will be previewing the content ahead of time just in case. Any recommendations???

Cinfhen Maybe @Lmstraubie or @LibrarianRyan can offer some suggestions ??!?!? 6y
glitterkitty459 I haven't listened to this one on audio but how about 6y
LibrarianRyan @Cinfhen thx. Bun ocular is fun. The dog thinks the bunny is a vampire but it‘s not graphic. The color is being drained from veggies. Really cute. For some laughs try Clementine. If you can find it The Secrets of Droon. And The Spiderwick chronicles. Check out Cornelia Funke. She has some early chapter fantasy that would read well for the 2 but still be interesting to the 12. Or Inkheart (which is a bit dry in the middle). Red wall. The Warriors. 6y

LibrarianRyan Zoo at the edge of the world (I may not have that exactly correct). Menangie. Cabinet of curiosities. The secret zoo. Sorry if my titles and spelling g may be a little off. 6y
ravenlee Chris Grabenstein‘s Lemoncello Library series is really fun (but I didn‘t do the audio version). No ghosts or monsters, but lots of kids who love to read. And if they like realistic fiction, the Penderwicks series by Jeanne Birdsall is all about sisters. (edited) 6y
sherryvdh @LibrarianRyan Omg so many great rec's in there! Thanks Ryan! @ravenlee @glitterkitty459 thank you! I have so much to look at now! 💕 6y
LibrarianRyan @ravenlee I second Ravenlee. Also Book Scavenger, and I just finished To night owl from Dig fish and LOVED IT 6y
Cinfhen I knew @LibrarianRyan would have recs for you!!!!!! She‘s awesomesauce 💕 6y
CoffeeK8 If you need something for filler. My kids (9 & 3) love the Wow in the world podcast. Science and humor from PBS 6y
sherryvdh @CoffeeK8 Interesting! I'll definitely look into that. My 6 year old might like it too. (Though he's not coming in the car with us. I'm always looking for new content for him.) 6y
sherryvdh @Cinfhen Thanks Cindy. She's pretty fantastic! 6y
Lmstraubie I'd have to add Matilda by Roald Dahl narrated by Kate Winslet (she was fantastic!) and the Wizard of Oz narrated by Anne Hathaway (also fantastic) 6y

When a nine year old begs you to read their favorite book, you say yes, especially if that nine year old is your kid...

Thing is, I didn‘t expect to like it. But so far, it is amazing. Just the kind Of book I would have loved at her age.

Absolutely whizzed through this fun middle grade story featuring a snarky heroine, an equally snarky prince, and a whole bunch of demons. Since it is middle grade, the plot is pretty focused on action but there is still quite a good amount of character development in there. Also A+ on the incorporation of Indian mythology and folk tales. Definitely want to read the next book!

If you love the Rick Riordan books, this one will be a great read alike. Based on Indian folklore, it features a sassy female protagonist who discovers that she is hardly ordinary.

I‘ve heard such good things about this new series I figured it was time to get pulled in as well. As a bookseller, and a mom of a 23 year old, I have to work hard to stay on top of what is popular for the kiddos. I‘m loving the fact that diversity is really taking hold in children‘s books!

Aw, this was a cute story! I loved the snappy one liners BUT I really don't like that there was a romance in it. I just role my eyes at that. The mc is clearly incredibly smart and grows to better understand herself and her parents as well as the new world she is thrust into. The magic and new world was really fun and easy to get into.

Kiranmala is a New Jersey 6th grader with Indian parents. They like to call her “princess,” and they are way too concerned about how much fiber she eats.

But on Kiran‘s 12th birthday she realizes she has bigger problems- interdimensional demon problems. Her parents have been kidnapped, and she finds out she really is a princess after all. So with the help of two princes, she sets off to get her parents back.

I picked this one up at my book fair a few weeks ago. It reminded me a lot of the Rick Riordan books. Upon reading it, I do see some similarities to the Percy Jackson books. However, the majority of the plot taking place in another dimension keeps the plot from becoming too much like Riordan‘s books. The characters are interesting & I want to see them get more fleshed out in sequels. My only real complaint is that the villains are rather cliche.

night_shift Yeah, I had that complaint too about the villains! I read this a couple weeks ago (borrowed from work). 7y

Mehso-so

The villains seemed way too childish, not much of a threat, and with the exception of Kiran all the other characters felt like caricatures and cardboard cut-outs of archtypes, but it was quite an adventure & so much of it was completely new mythos to me. Also, liked the list of books for further reading in the back!

Today was our season kick off at work, which means number talk, bulk food, and free books. The top two are new for the season and I'm really excited to get to Serpent's Secret. The rest are old books from our lending library that have been replaced and were free for any of us to grab. So of course I went overboard in lieu of my buying ban 😋

Want another potential Rick Riordan-like series with mythology and a kick-ass heroine? Then look no further than The Serpent's Secret. 12 year old Kiranmala discovers she is from a magical kingdom steeped in Indian folklore and is sent on a quest to rescue her kidnapped parents. Full of humor and cultural traditions, kids, particular girls, will enjoy this new upcoming series that showcases an Indian American Buffy character battling monsters.
