Once and Future Witches
Once and Future Witches | Alix E Harrow
In the late 1800s, three sisters use witchcraft to change the course of history in a Hugo award-winning author's powerful novel of magic amid the suffragette movement. In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.But when the Eastwood sisters -- James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna -- join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote -- and perhaps not even to live -- the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive. There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.For more from Alix E. Harrow, check out The Ten Thousand Doors of January.

I bought this when it was published a few years ago, started it, got distracted, finally read it the last few weeks. Took it with me to Harrow‘s book signing for Starling House & got this signed, too.
Love the story, characters, & especially the sisters. Could have been shorter, I think. Perfect for this time of year. #doublespin for September

GondorGirl I loved this one, too! I mean, I've loved all of her books but... 🥰 13mo
Scochrane26 @GondorGirl I love all her books. Will be reading Starling House soon. My friend already finished & says it‘s good. Harrow is from my state, so I‘ve been fortunate to see her twice at signings. 13mo
GondorGirl @Scochrane26 I'm so jealous! She's one of my favorites. Her closest Starling tour stop was five hours away. 13mo
Scochrane26 @GondorGirl Well, this time we did have to drive about 1.5 hrs because she was in Louisville, not Lexington (Kentucky) where we live. She didn‘t seem to have many stops this time. 13mo

I only got to finish one book for #AuldLangSpine this year (The Heartbreak Bakery) BUT I‘m halfway through this one from @Clare-Dragonfly list & I love it. I originally chose it bc it was the #LGBTbookclub January read & it satisfied #TarorTBR prompt. Three birds with one stone, as the saying goes.

What did you think of the witchcraft in this story? Was it similar or different to your personal idea of witching?

#LGBTbookclub

AbigailJaneBlog I loved the witchcraft in this story. I'd seen the idea of hiding witchcraft in womenly ways before, but I loved the use of fairytale and nursery rhymes etc. 2y
MoonWitch94 @AbigailJaneBlog I am only halfway through this one, but I am really enjoying it. I am loving the witchcraft in the story, and as you said, it‘s not a new way to tell the story, but the fairytales & rhymes, etc make it feel that way. And you can really feel the magic in the writing. 2y
See All 6 Comments
peanutnine I loved how witchcraft was portrayed in this book. I definitely believe that a lot of the rumors and fear of witching back in the day stemmed from women having agency and power in little ways like that. I liked that nursery rhymes and fairy tales were ways of hiding a spell in plain sight from men 2y
BookwormAHN I loved the witchcraft. The hidden spells in the nursery rhymes and fairy tales were fantastic. They added so much to the history of the story. Loved this book 💜 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I loved it. It felt like a great way to pull together real folklore and folk magic with the more in-your-face magic common to fantasy novels. 2y

Each of the Eastwood sister's had a very distinct personality/vibe; which did you most relate to? Were there any other standout characters for you?
#LGBTbookclub

AbigailJaneBlog I think Bella is the sister I most connected with, but my favourite character was either Cleo or August. What can I say, I love a rogue. I was also really intigued by the idea of "mother's names" which I hadn't encountered before. 2y
peanutnine I'm a middle child of three girls so I definitely related to the sister dynamic here, but I didn't relate to any one sister but rather certain aspects of their personalities and relationships in each of them. I also really enjoyed August as a character and was rooting for him. 2y
BookwormAHN I also loved August but I think I related to the bookish Bella most. 2y

Hey folks, welcome to this month's discussion.
First prompt: this book was very much a feminist text, but how did you find the themes of disabled/poc/queer identities? Could the writer have included more on these points?
#LGBTbookclub

AbigailJaneBlog I felt that the plight of Cleo and the people of New Cairo was the most established and felt the most real to me. The inclusion of the queer reactionships and trans identities felt a little tacked on to me. I also would have liked more of a discussion of how Juniper manages with a painful leg injury - as a person who uses a cane, I felt like the effects were almost entirely ignored. 2y
BookwormAHN I really liked Jennie even though I felt like her story was a mere side note at times. 2y
See All 9 Comments
AbigailJaneBlog @BookwormAHN yes I loved her! I absolutely did not pick up on the "hints" and was pleasantly surprised at the reveal, but then felt a bit sad that it wasn't discussed earlier on with more acknowledgement of just what she went through 2y
BookwormAHN I missed a bunch of the hints too or rather I thought there were other explanations for them 🤦🏼‍♀️ 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I was embarrassed to have missed the hints about Jennie! I also loved Cleo and the people of New Cairo, and I adored her relationship with Beatrice. Edit: Bella? One of the sisters 😂 (edited) 2y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I only made it 25% into this book as it didn't grab me emotionally, but from what I did read I picked up on the hints that the secretary (Jenny?) was a trans girl. I'm not a fan of hiding a trans person's status and then using it as a plot point or surprise reveal, so I wasn't into that. I am curious to know how the librarian and journalist's relationship panned out! 2y
AbigailJaneBlog @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian yes I actually wanted to bail on this until page 301 😭 I feel like the beginning definitely could have been faster. Bella and Cleo end up together and exchange rings - it's sweet but not a wow romance for me! 2y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @AbigailJaneBlog oh wow that's so far to get wanting to bail!! I'm glad those two women got together, as a queer librarian I always appreciate representation! 2y

I read most of this book in October, and I finished it back on Nov. 1st.

I loved the alt-history Victorian-era witches/suffragist main plot line and the three sister characters, each of whom has a unique personality and motivations to root for (Agnes was my favorite). I did find the Salem, Mass. connections to be kind of superfluous and the fairy tale retelling elements felt overused and repetitive by the end (this was a 500+ page book). 4⭐️

Harrow is definitely on my favorite author list now. Magic, women‘s rights, suffragettes, free will, race, and class…loved how the sisters‘ stories overlapped and how seamlessly gay and trans characters were woven into the tale. Each character was full and complete and three dimensional and essential to the plot. No fillers or cardboard cutouts. The magic system was fully realized as well. Really enjoyed this one.

Loved. The book is set in an alternate world that has a very similar history to our own. It‘s the 1890s when women are fighting for the vote but magic is real and outlawed and all the fairy tales are just a little different. I loved how witching was used as a metaphor for will and agency, how it was tied to the suffragist movement, and magic wasn‘t quite what the women thought it to be. A richly imagined world and beautiful story.

After a slow and uncertain beginning, all my wishes came true. From the beginning of part 2, I never stopped having goosebumps. Amazing characters, great plot, lot's of happenings and twist, detailed historical facts. The message about women and their power moved me immensly. I want to meet these women, and learn their ways. I want, no, I need to be a witch.

This book wrecked me. What began as a fun and whimsical story - full of diverting fairy tales and nursery rhymes and reimagined history - became something FIERCE and all-consuming. Harrow has done it again! This story of three sisters and their legion of Sisters fed my soul and made me believe that anything is possible when women put their minds and hearts and powers together. AHHHH the writing was devastatingly flawless. Now I need my own copy!!

They talked about writing where “the boundaries of myth and history are totally blurred,” prioritizing inclusive feminism, and their research and writing in general. Loved hearing about how their drafts differed so much from final books. Check it out!!

This was my Illumicrate read in July, this is her second book. It has witches and suffragettes. Three sisters who were separated are brought together in New Salem in 1893. There are not supposed to be witches anymore but they are around quietly going on with business. Then another force comes out and the witches need to form a coven to help battle this power. I enjoyed it a lot. The female characters are all really good.

There was a lot I liked about this book; the retelling of fairy tales, suffragettes, and witches but for some reason the story fell a little flat for me. It was borderline YA and adult and I hoped for more layers, more oomf, I think? I spent the morning finishing up the last 125 pages before the meeting but alas non of the other book club readers finished before the meeting so maybe it was just not our story.

This was one of the most unique books I‘ve ever read. This is an alternate history/fantasy novel about witches getting involved in the suffragist movement in nineteenth century United States. This is a fiercely feminist novel featuring a diverse cast of characters including a lesbian couple and a transgender woman. The Eastwood sisters are the central characters: Bella, Agnes, and Juniper. Intricate, intelligent, well written. Read this one!
