This novel from Stephen King follows Billy Summers, a hired hit man who only kills those who deserve it. As a 44 year old war veteran, time isn‘t on his side leading to him wanting to retire. Before he could, Nick Marjarian, someone Billy has worked with before proposes one last job that pays 2 million dollars. The person Billy needs to kill is another hitman Joel Allen, a murderer people want to keep quiet. All things go according to plan like

Claire.Martinusen they always do until something becomes suspicious, Nick proposes a getaway plan, something he usually leaves up to Billy. Billy, having his suspicions, comes up with his own plans to get away after the hit is done.

Claire.Martinusen If you like suspenseful books, movies, or TV shows that leave you on the edge of your seat, Billy Summers by Stephen King is for you.

This novel is told in third person. I know this because the author developed the story using pronouns such as “he”, “she” , and “they”.

I had a great reading summer: prizes from the library, good books, & I read on a train!

AnnCrystal 👏🤩🥳👍💝. How was A Council of Dolls ? That book is on my to-buy list (one day soon). If you're going to review, I will wait for your post 😉👍. (edited) 4mo
PaperbackPirate I really liked it @AnnCrystal and so did my book club! Part historical fiction and part magical realism would be my best description- a lot of our history to still reckon with. Good reminder to post a review! 4mo

This King story is a one-last-job-and-I‘m-done-forever trope, & classic King had to make it with a special twist. I loved the characters & would read another book about all of the “good” ones. I was really surprised at the intricate combat descriptions coming from author with no military background.
Today I had about 100 pages to go & had to finish it!
Great “summer” read!

5feet.of.fury SK books are so crazy because so many start one way & end another. While he was putting together his plan and all the disguises to do The Last Job, I was still hoping there would be a way that he could just stay in the neighborhood & really be a writer. But of course, we have to go do something completely different. But I liked Alice & that 2nd arc too. 7mo
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury that ending 😳 I didn‘t see that coming. I was really hoping for a HEA for everyone, but it was a great ending! I wish SK wasn‘t so political in his books, but it‘s not a deal breaker so I guess I‘m putting up with it 🤣 7mo

Loved it. Sometimes I don‘t appreciate where King‘s stories meander but I was fully along for the ride. Billy was so endearing. The cliches (one last job) & writer‘s jokes/conventions playing out kept it from feeling too heavy. Even though it was heavy, lots of bad stuff happened. I‘ll be thinking of that ending a while. #losersclub

ShyBookOwl I also struggle with King's meandering. Love The Shining and Misery, though, so maybe this one will be worth a shot 7mo
TieDyeDude I thought this was so well done. Even though it meanders, it also shifts genre, so the meandering seems meaningful. Having just left western Colorado, it was nice to revisit in the latter parts of the book :) 7mo
5feet.of.fury @TieDyeDude the way the scenery was described was so pretty, I haven‘t been to Colorado in over a decade & could still picture it ❤️ 7mo

#12Booksof2023

Favorite read in November was the tagged book—I just liked everything about it. King has many talents (needless to say) but one of them is giving readers reason to root for complex, flawed characters, where the line between good/bad is often blurry/smudged, and nowhere is that more true than in this book.

1. Clue has long been a favorite—with my kids too though my husband thinks it‘s boring. We liven things up by taking every opportunity to tell stories when we ask questions, hunt for clues, & solve the crime. Explanations of the interpersonal relations, revelations about motivations, & descriptions of the murder get quite elaborate. 🔪 🕯️ ☠️

2. Monopoly features prominently in the tagged book which is great.

Started 🦃 Day finishing a book which may well make my Top 10 for 2023. I don‘t think anyone on Litsy needs me to tell them that King knows how to tell a good story. And this one about a hired killer taking on one last job—which he doesn‘t like to think about because something always happens on the “last job”—is a fantastic read. Billy Summers is a character that stays with you, for a multitude of reasons, and his story is very entertaining.

I should not care this much about a hit man…but I suppose that part of King‘s brilliance…

Also, this story is tense as all get out and hard to put down. I suspect it will wind up being one of my favorite King books.

I didn't know anything about this going in: my library friend got a water damaged copy returned, so weeded it and gave it to me. I didn't even read the cover flap until I was about 1/3 through and had no idea where the rest of the book was going. It's an interesting plot, and crosses multiple genres: assassination plot, revenge thriller, veteran war story, love story. It is a winding road, but I enjoyed the ride.

An excellent novel! The character of Bill Summers, an assassin, telling the story of a complex job. Stephen King remains a master of words. The story is so well written that I was engrossed from the first few pages until the very end. The ending caught me by surprise but was excellent. Wow!!

Like its hitman protagonist, this novel has an identity crisis, and as it lurched from one half-baked cliche to another, I smelled a rat: this thing was written to be a lucrative TV miniseries. Warmed-over plotting, a female character who feels disturbingly like wish fulfillment, and King specifying the politics of EVERY CHARACTER. We get it, dude. There‘s a decent novel about trauma and writing buried in here somewhere…bring a big backhoe.

I don‘t know what to think about King‘s latest novel, a one-last-job homage, war story, and straight-up thriller. I can‘t tell if it was any good, or if King‘s writing is good enough to keep me reading no matter the subject matter. What do you all think? Was it good?

Love!! I was excited to see the reference to The Shining, my first and favorite King book. Also references to the area I live in, I always get excited at mentions of my home and my maiden name. The storyline was great. My only complaint was the constant mention of Trump. I know King hates Trump, that's fine, whatever. A time or two would have been ok to keep the timeline relevant, but it felt like it went overboard. #20in4 #Readathon
