You're a Mean One, Matthew Prince
You're a Mean One, Matthew Prince | Timothy Janovsky
22 posts | 20 read | 10 to read
An "effervescent" (Rachel Lynn Solomon) Christmas LGBTQIA+ New Adult RomCom, perfect for fans of Schitt's Creek and Red White & Royal Blue. Bring a little joy to the world? Not today, Santa. Matthew Prince is young, rich, and thoroughly spoiled. So what if his parents barely remember he exists and the press is totally obsessed with him? He's on top of the world. But one major PR misstep later, and Matthew is cut off and shipped away to spend the holidays in his grandparents' charming small town hellscape. Population: who cares? It's bad enough he's stuck in some festive winter wonderlandit's even worse that he has to share space with Hector Martinez, an obnoxiously attractive local who's unimpressed with anything and everything Matthew does. Just when it looks like the holiday season is bringing nothing but heated squabbles, the charity gala loses its coordinator and Matthew steps in as a saintly act to get home early on good behavior...with Hector as his maddening plus-one. But even a Grinch can't resist the unexpected joy of found family, and in the end, the forced proximity and infectious holiday cheer might be enough to make a lonely Prince's heart grow three sizes this year. People Are Raving About Timothy Janovsky: "This book made my queer heart so very full and deeply happy."Anita Kelly "A cinematic daydream guaranteed to steal your heart."Julian Winters "Wonderfully upbeat and sweet."Suzanne Park "Full of hope and heart."Alexandria Bellefleur "[A] fresh, sweet, and swoony love story that blends coming-of-age comedy with the nuances of exploring sexual identity."Alison Cochrun

Team #RestingGrinchFace : did anyone read our team read? I did, it was just so-so for me as I had a really hard time with the MC and how selfish and immature he was. I kept trying to picture him as David from Schitt‘s Creek and that made him a little more likable to me, but not quite enough. #wintergames #buddyread

Bookworm54 I was hoping to get to this too… but I will be lucky if I finish Snow Child (which I am really enjoying) before Jan! 😂 4mo
tdrosebud I just finished this last night, and it took me awhile as I too had problems with the MC. I almost stopped halfway through. I was happier by the end and would probably also do a so-so or a low pick. It definitely won't be a yearly re-read. 4mo

willaful What is with all the childishness in contemporary romance? 4mo
AmandaBlaze It was the way the parents treated the MC, I guess, but not all monied teenagers behave this way. I also got tired of all the “dude” calling. Someone who read the book on Goodreads counted 81 times that dude was used. (edited) 4mo
mdemanatee I had similar feelings when I read last XMas. 4mo
Airykah13 I‘m going to start that one as soon as I finish up Stalking Around the Christmas Tree 4mo
Julsmarshall I didn‘t get the Snow Child in from the library in time to read it, @Bookworm54 but I‘m you are enjoying it! 4mo

Just finished the team read for #wintergames It was alright, reminded me too much of other books/movies, which - yes, of course, that happens with tried and true tropes…. But it distracted me. #restinggrinchface

My #YearInBooks #DNF

Both main characters are just rude. Also can't take Hector saying 'Dude' all the time. He says it 12 times (reading on Kindle it's easy to count.) In 42 pages.

Thankfully I didn't pay money for this. It was Library Loan.

Continues in Comments. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig A lot of people gave this great Reviews. Setting is life in 1989 Communist ruled Romainia. I just wasn't in the right headspace for it. I needed happier reads this year.
4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Books & Brews Club read. I'm not a sports fan so I found MC carrying on about 'The Game' annoying. Probably would have finished if I hadn't run out of time before Book Club.
4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Readalong that I was struggling with. I had limited reading time in September so I focused on things I really want to read. Not trudgeding on.

I enjoyed this book, especially the character development of Matthew Prince. The romance was sweet. I think it could have been a little shorter, but understand the author didn't want to rush Matthew's emotional growth. The book also did not shy away from mental health issues like anxiety and panic attacks.

Starting our #buddyread, #restinggrinchface ! Anyone else? Our team reads will be read at your own pace; I‘ll share a check in post towards the end of the month for each one so we can compare our thoughts. I meant to read this in December from my holiday TBR but just finally picked it up last month. This was a fun forced proximity, Schitts Creek-esque romance. Matthew has a great redemption arc from the spoiled rich kid to a compassionate individual working through his problems. There was good anxiety representation.

4.5/5

Matthew Prince is being exiled from his city life to spend Christmas in his grandparent's small town. Even worse, he has to sleep on a bunk bed, and the top bunk is taken by his grandparent's guest, Hector. If Matthew is ever going to get back into his parent's good graces, then he and Hector will have to work together to create a charity gala that will impress.

I loved Matthew Prince and his completely understandable grinchy attitude.

3 ⭐ When this book starts out, it‘s almost like a holiday take on Schitts creek. Our main character, Matthew Prince is a New York socialite, who just bought an island with his parents money. His punishment is to be shipped off to the country to stay with his grandparents who don‘t come from money and won‘t take it, to keep his spending habits under wraps. Matthew Prince very much echoes David from Schitts creek: that rich preppy fish ⬇

LibrarianRyan out of water type person. However, I like David! Matthew Prince is really hard to like for the first half of this book. He has the spoiled rich kid complex, and it‘s annoying. He also goes out of their way to point out that it‘s his parents‘ actions that have made him the way he is and all of his actions have been to get their attention. That may be the case, but it doesn‘t mean it‘s enjoyable to read. I really do like the love interest Hector in 1y
LibrarianRyan this male/male romance and I do think they make a cute couple. Once again, it feels resoundingly like shits creek. This doesn‘t feel new or fresh. And while the title goes with the story, the Muppets Christmas, Carol comes up frequently. This does feel more like a retelling of a Christmas Carol then it does the Grinch. Matthew at one point in time does call himself the grinch but I guess you can see his heart growing or maybe it‘s just his eyes ar 1y
LibrarianRyan opened but… I just wanted to like this one more than I did. It‘s very choppy. I love the town I love the grandparents. I love the side characters. I just really do not like Matthew prince. I do eventually feel for him and I‘m happy for him, but he‘s just so not for me. 1y

LibrarianRyan This is a love story, it does work, however, it feels extremely Y a. There is nothing wrong with YA romance. I happen to really like them but this does not feel right. Why a romance? I am glad the author repetitively reminded you that they are both in their early 20s because one‘s graduating college and the other one hasn‘t been to school except for they the few months at New York University. This book is steamy, it‘s not spicy. I think if the 1y
LibrarianRyan author wants to write steam and spice, they need to read more of it. The action in this book was bland more like a humidifier than an actual steam. I give the author credit for trying, but they need a bit more practice. Overall, this was a fun book and maybe I would like it if Hallmark turned it into a movie but right now it feels more like a Netflix holiday movie then a Hallmark one. 1y
Trashcanman 👁️👁️ 1y
LibrarianRyan @Trashcanman you too. is it snowing yet? 1y
Trashcanman @LibrarianRyan in the mountains but not where I live. How about you 1y
LibrarianRyan @Trashcanman 4 days of rain. I have a private lake in my driveway. You can almost swim in it. It was supposed to be snow, but it's just too warm. 1y
Laughterhp Hmm my library hold came in for this one. I started it and said to myself, “I don‘t think I can read a whole book with this guy” and put it down. I‘m wondering if it‘s not even worth my time because I have no desire to pick it back up. 1y
LibrarianRyan @Laughterhp It gets better but at way to long. And it was not worth it. If it wasn't an audiobook for me I would not have finished it. I have a print copy compliments of the publisher, but I guarantee it would have been a DNF if I was reading it in print. Go with your gut. 1y
Laughterhp Yeah, I have the ebook, so no speeding through that! 1y

Christmas gays!!! One is a grinch who‘s never had to work for a thing in his life and the other is a sweetie who lives by the saying “hard work feeds the soul.” They were so good for each other. Read this so fast.

This is a fun Hallmark rom com situation but with a queer twist! Spoiled, rich Matthew Prince is cut off from his fortune and exiled to his grandparents' winter town. Coming into conflict with local resident Hector, he learns about kindness, empathy, and charity in this holiday enemies to lovers romance.

When a story is inspired by the Grinch, I need an MC to start out despicably mean. A 21 year-old, spoiled, paparazzi-hunted, gay kid is too young for the role. Sure he‘s grounded for buying an island with his allowance from new-money mom and old-money dad. He tries to convince us that he‘s selfish for coveting designer clothes and pricey face product, but a Grinch must do worse than that. All that aside, it really was fun to read. ↓

marleed Background pic- That‘s my son who has a blast dressing and acting the Grinch. My grandson, his nephew, was brave enough to offer ‘knuckles‘ to the guy :) 1y

An entitled rich boy gets sent to stay with his grandparents in small town New York after a PR disaster threatens his parents reputation, but as he slowly opens up to the grad student living with his grandparents and rediscovery the joy he once found in the holidays and doing good for others he realizes just how unfulfilled a life he was living. Loved the GAD rep and the m/m romance with a bi love interest. Plus the grandparents! So sweet!
