The True Deceiver
The True Deceiver | Tove Jansson
10 posts | 13 read | 43 to read
Deceptionthe lies we tell ourselves and the lies we tell othersis the subject of this, Tove Janssons most unnerving and unpredictable novel. Here Jansson takes a darker look at the subjects that animate the best of her work, from her sensitive tale of island life,The Summer Book, to her famous Moomin stories: solitude and community, art and life, love and hate.Snow has been falling on the village all winter long. It covers windows and piles up in front of doors. The sun rises late and sets early, and even during the day there is little to do but trade tales. This year everybodys talking about Katri Kling and Anna Aemelin. Katri is a yellow-eyed outcast who lives with her simpleminded brother and a dog she refuses to name. She has no use for the white lies that smooth social intercourse, and she can see straight to the core of any problem. Anna, an elderly childrens book illustrator, appears to be Katris opposite: a respected member of the village, if an aloof one. Anna lives in a large empty house, venturing out in the spring to paint exquisitely detailed forest scenes. But Anna has something Katri wants, and to get it Katri will take control of Annas life and livelihood. By the time spring arrives, the two women are caught in a conflict of ideals that threatens to strip them of their most cherished illusions.

Snow has been falling all winter in this story of two very different women one young, poor, sharp eyed and intelligent the other older, wealthy, artistic and idealistic. Caught in conflict both of their lives will forever changed by the time spring arrives. Almost thriller like in the tension evoked in this novel of solitude and community, art and life, love and hate.

batsy Lovely review. Need to get this soon. 7mo

I finished this book last night, and I am left here ruminating in my bookcoma. It‘s a story about two women - a Big Bad Wolf and a Flowery Rabbit - one is deceitful, another is gullible. When the two characters meet, they force change onto themselves, and they become the persons that they despise.

Jansson‘s delivery is compact and masterful; such complex character study in just 180 pages of controlled prose. I call this nothing but perfection!

emilyhaldi Great review!! I was intrigued as soon as I saw on the cover - Intro by Ali Smith ❤️ 1y
sisilia @emilyhaldi Oh yesss... It‘s an excellent book 👍🏻 1y

This is on my TBR. I loved the Summer Book. #lyricalApril #true

Have you read it?

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Haven't read it, but now Im interested! I knew I had heard the name before . . . Moomintrolls! 3y
Cinfhen Looks good! I've never read Tove Jansson before....need to fix that🤓 3y
RowReads1 I liked it. The writing is sparse and lovely. It's hard for me to compare as I've only read this one and the moomins, even though I also have the summer book and fair play. 3y

On a day when temperatures are near 90F, I'm happy to spend time with Tove Jansson's suspenseful story about two women, Katri and Anna, in a snow-packed village
