NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLEROn a spring morning in 1951, eleven-year-old chemist and aspiring detective Flavia de Luce gathers with her family at the railway station, awaiting the return of her long-lost mother, Harriet. Yet upon the trains arrival in the English village of Bishops Lacey, Flavia is approached by a tall stranger who whispers a cryptic message into her ear. Moments later, he is dead, mysteriously pushed under the train by someone in the crowd. Who was this man, what did his words mean, and why were they intended for Flavia? Back home at Buckshaw, the de Luces crumbling estate, Flavia puts her sleuthing skills to the test. Following a trail of clues sparked by the discovery of a reel of film stashed away in the attic, she unravels the deepest secrets of the de Luce clan, involving none other than Winston Churchill himself. Surrounded by family, friends, and a famous pathologist from the Home Officeand making spectacular use of Harriets beloved Gipsy Moth plane, Blithe SpiritFlavia will do anything, even take to the skies, to land a killer.BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Alan Bradley's As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust.Praise for The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches Part Harriet the Spy, part Violet Baudelaire from Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events, Flavia is a pert and macabre pragmatist. The New York Times Book Review [Alan] Bradleys award winning Flavia de Luce series . . . has enchanted readers with the outrageous sleuthing career of its precocious leading lady. . . . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Although I found the plot of this book rather predictable, I also thought it was a really fun way to add depth to the characters. Flavia is, after all, almost 12 now. This book also tied up some loose ends while allowing the characters to move on with their lives. I can‘t wait to tag along with Flavia as she heads “to the colonies” and finds new adventures with new characters and friends.

This instalment of Flavia‘s story is such a shift from the previous novels. Flavia is focused on the mystery of what happened to her mother instead of the man who fell to his death at the train. It‘s a fun, fresh approach that keeps the series from feeling repetitive. Can‘t wait to follow Flavia in her next adventure.

I haven‘t been keeping up with this series, although I adore Flavia. The books were getting to be too much the same, and not advancing the characters at all. This entry is exactly what the series needed. Some of the mystery of Flavia‘s mother‘s disappearance is resolved, and Flavia learns about herself and her place in the world. This story has reignited my delight in the world of the DeLuce family.

Question 4!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies I am worried that Flavia may be a fish out of water - as Buckshaw has been set up as the place she could be herself. I assume Buckshaw will just continue as usual... Just with less intrigue as Flavia will not be around to instigate it. 😂😂 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies Flavia can make intrigue wherever she goes! Her father has let Flavia be completely free at Buckshaw so the structure of school will likely be a shock. 4y
BridgetteM I am interested to see what the school is like. Harriet went there as well, so maybe Flavia will learn more about her mother. 4y
janeycanuck @BridgetteM it‘s strange to think of Flavia somewhere other than Buckshaw but she‘ll definitely try to take advantage of being somewhere her mother was to learn more about her. She wouldn‘t be Flavia if she didn‘t!! 4y

Question 3!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies It may become more contentious. But I hope not too much as in the last book there was alot of ground made up in terms of sibling relationships. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies It might - but with Flavia in Canada, it could give everyone a chance to settle in to the new reality. 4y
BridgetteM I think Flavia‘s relationship with her sisters may become more contentious because of this. But hopefully the distance that comes with her going to boarding school diffuses some of that. 4y
janeycanuck @BridgetteM definitely - Flavia inheriting Buckshaw isn‘t going to improve things. A bit of distance should help. 4y

Question 2!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies Her aunt's history as well as what she has laid out for Flavia. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies yes, so much to learn about Aunt Felicity! 4y
BridgetteM I like Dogger the best. My heart breaks for him. I like that there‘s more to Aunt Felicity than I first thought as well. (edited) 4y

Question 1!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies I was a little surprised on the tack that Flavia took as I thought that she would want to be more involved in what was at hand.... But I guess that her mind was quite overwhelmed with dealing with thoughts of her mother. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies Yeah, I agree. I think we saw Flavia do a lot of growing up in this book - and she was focused on other things. 4y
BridgetteM Just finished this one yesterday. I was kind of glad Flavia was focused on figuring out the mystery behind her mother‘s death. I‘ve been wondering what Harriet was doing in Asia since book one. Now I know! 4y
janeycanuck @BridgetteM yes, Harriet and what happened to her has been a constant theme since the beginning. This certainly starts to give us some closure on that story. 4y

I liked this! It was an odd one as Flavia may not have been the main mystery solver (but she managed to get to the conclusion when the mystery was wrapping up). Again, Bradley moves the story forward and this ends on a mini cliffhanger - though less than the previous book.

Jayne Entwistle is the perfect reader in the audio version of Alan Bradley's The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches. Book 6 in the Flavia de Luce mystery series felt different for me from the beginning with its focus on the recovery of the body of Harriet's mother. At first, the novel doesn't feel like a mystery. Instead, it focuses on Flavia, her two sisters, and her father-- (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod along, of course, with the faithful Dogger and the well-established characters from her small town in England. As the book continues, though, we see both the aftermath of this pivotal event in the family AND Flavia's investigations into an array of related mysteries.⠀

As always, Flavia's voice is the star for me, and Entwistle is brilliant in her portrayal of the young girl AND of the distinct characters in her life. Moving, perfect novel.

Y‘all are this is the best of the series yet. In this one the mystery is less about the murder at the beginning of the book, but about Harriet & the truths that have defined Flavia‘s life even without her being aware. He tried to present us with a neatly summed up story and I think he did. I was a little less than satisfied that just as Flavia realized who this book's villain was, so too must the villain have realized that Flavia and others had figured everything out. I just felt there was a bit too little detail given about that.

I do like the way the greater story-line wrapped up, I think. I have a few niggling questions but they are minor.

Having killed off all the remotely believable characters in Bishop‘s Lacey, the author decides to send his protagonist abroad to Canada to school, the better to spread out the death count. The defenestration of a character in this book is particularly over the top. The books are entertaining and I‘ll keep reading, but this one was a bit much.

This is by far the saddest Flavia book. It's also my favorite of the series so far. Lots of character development for the whole de Luce family. Feely and Daffy even manage to bring a tear to my eye. I like that Flavia's world is changing. Many Authors of Series let their characters stagnate by continuing to retell the same store. I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm actually downloading #7 as I type.
