The Diviners: The Diviners Book 1
The Diviners: The Diviners Book 1 | Libba Bray
THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER1920s New York. A teen clairvoyant. An old evil. It has begun.Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old home town and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City - and she is pos-i-tute-ly thrilled! New York is the city of speak-easies, rent parties, shopping and movie palaces, and soon enough Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfeld girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult - also known as 'The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies'.When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of it. Even Evie's new pals - hoofers, numbers runners and activists, but all swell kids - are drawn into the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer - if he doesn't catch her first.'A fascinating alternative 1926 where men aren't all they seem - and are possibly much more. Evie is sassy, feisty, and full of beans.Very Mary Shelley after a long night on the laudanum. Gripping - I could not stop.' - Kerry Greenwood'.It's Marjorie Morningstar meets Silence of the Lambs, and Bray dives into it with the brio of the era, alternating rat-a-rat flirting with cold-blooded killings. The book is big and wants to be the kind of thing you can lose yourself in. Does it succeed? It's jake, baby.' - Booklist'The Diviners feels like the next big thing. Its powerful twists and supernatural storyline never leave the back of your mind. It's a brilliant, bizarre concept of the supernatural world blending in with New York's 1920s. A murder mystery that makes a killer of a story.' - Kate, teen reviewer

The first time I read this book, I had nightmares for a few weeks, but I HAD to know what was going to happen next, so I kept reading. This time, I didn‘t have nightmares, but it still creeped me out enough that I slept with the light on for a few nights. I love everything about this series: the characters, the supernatural elements, the bits of actual history sprinkled in, but especially the dialogue.

4.5⭐️ OK, this book is a pretty high score for me because the majority of it was amazing. It had me hooked from the beginning and had me on the edge of my seat waiting for what was happening next. However, the ending was just so bad for me. It felt so disconnected from the rest of the story and is making me question if I even want to continue the series. Which sucks because again, the majority of the book was so amazing.

Scariest book I‘ve read in ages. The narration is fabulous and I reckon she probably captures the language of that time period better than if I were reading it on the page. But at more than one point I cranked the speed up to 2.5 just to get through the terror. Very well done ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Evie O'Neill has a gift, but it's in her best interest to hide it. It's 1926, during Prohibition, and after getting a bit drunk at a party she lets loose a secret that a wealthy young son holds, using her gift. She's shipped off to New York City to live with her uncle where a series of grisly murders occurs. Can she use her gift to help solve the mystery or will she become a victim? ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a little slow to start, lots of world and character building rather than plot, but once the plot started it really went fast.

It bothers me that so many people hate Evie as a character. Growing up with ADHD as a girl I've felt all of these things so strongly. You try your hardest to be good or polite or "normal;" in the end you lose track of time or you're too enthusiastic about that one subject or you miss a social cue or you say that impulsive thing. Your brain cracks under pressure and the harder you try the more you fail. The world isn't kind to the neurodivergent.

MidnightBookGirl I love this series, but I didn't realize there was so much hate for Evie. I personally think she's the bees knees! ;) 3y
demicaractere @MidnightBookGirl So many people I follow on Goodreads hate her. One of them even quit reading Lair of Dreams because of her. I think she's the bee's knees too. She might even be the elephant's eyebrows 3y

I originally gave up finding a book in my physical collection for the #CuriousCovers car prompt (most of my books are fantasy) and picked a comic with a motorcycle on the cover. I noticed that the book I found in a little library two days ago has a car on it, though!

DivineDiana I have been wanting to read The Diviners. It seems to be recommended quite frequently. 3y
Kenyazero @DivineDiana it's deserving of many recommendations! It's a fun read. The audiobook is also really well done. I hope you enjoy it when you get around to it! 3y

I really hated the first 2/3 of this book. I felt it was way longer than it needed to be. I was not connecting with the main character because she was so annoying. And most of the problems were just because they lacked communication and I hate that in books. Like JUST TALK! But towards the end I really did start to like it and I started liking the characters more. This books was 3 stars, but I will continue (:

First of all, I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! Second of all the characters and their backstories were exciting and I wanted to know more about them. Even the side characters who appeared for just a few pages had depth to them. Every character felt real, a person with fears, dreams and hopes. Third of all, the story itself was thrilling and I couldn't put the book down. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Cheshirecat913 I loved this book too! The atmosphere was so great in it and of course the characters. I also learned a bit more about that time period. I love your picture too! 4y

I‘ve been trying to get through this book for years. Multi-perspective horror with supernatural elements in 1920‘s Manhattan- my kind of book. I think by trying to keep up with new releases/ARCs has had me stray away.

Yes. Yes, it is.

Texreader In a book I‘m reading that delves deeply into Judaism in the Middle Ages (a murder mystery during the pogroms in Portugal), there was quite an interesting “lesson” about the Abraham-Isaac story. I would mistell it I‘m sure if I tried, but it was an enlightening & more humanized explanation. I‘m not of the Jewish faith so I have no idea if that interpretation is still around but it was a breath of fresh air about a gruesome story. 4y

Such an improvement! Loved the #audiobook version of this and will give the rest of the series a go in this format. Still a touch long even in this version, but still also got chills listening to certain passages. Bray paints such a vivid and beautiful portrait with her words; I‘m shocked I haven‘t seen this as a tv series or movie. Checked my first book off for this month‘s #bookspinbingo and this was my #bookspin! Woo hoo, two for one!!!

Already enjoying this in the audio format. My biggest issue with it was my dislike for Evie, but I find her much less annoying being read by someone else. So maybe just the way I read it 🤷🏼‍♀️ #bookspin is opening a new way for me to enjoy/getting addicted to books , haha

I am reading this one, and it's really interesting.... But I find myself easily distracted from reading it. There's a lot of Bray's Witt, charm and sarcasm. She is definitely great at making good, well developed characters, and the plot is interesting. It's just... Meh. I'm only halfway through the first book, though. Has anyone read it? What are your thoughts?

julesG I liked it, but the MC's effervescent personality was a bit grating. I listened to the audiobook, though. 4y

This was as deliciously creepy & satisfying as I remember it! Evie is the pinnacle of a witty, charming 1920s flapper — & a refreshing break from the “I‘m not like other girls” heroine. The serial-killer plot is gruesome — read with the lights on! — but intriguing. The best part, though, is how completely immersive the setting is. Every page is teeming with wonderful details about life in 1920s New York — & not just for the glamorous set. ★★★★☆.

PaperbackPrincess19 Such a well researched book, even the slang was captured. I‘m reading via audio and it is positutely fantastic, I highly recommend the audiobook, the experience is awesome! I sometimes read along on my Kindle whist listening. 5y

I love the 1920‘s setting and the elements of horror. The jazz-baby slang can be overdone at times, but the atmosphere is great! The protagonist starts off as a spoiled, selfish flapper who treats her best friend with careless disregard, but she shows growth by the end. Recommended!
