We Solve Murders
We Solve Murders: A Novel | Richard Osman
A brand new series. An iconic new detective duo. And a puzzling new murder to solve... Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life. He does the odd bit of investigation work, but he prefers his familiar habits and routines: the pub quiz, his favorite bench, his cat waiting for him when he comes home. His days of adventure are over: adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amys business now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. As a private security officer, she doesnt stay still long enough for habits or routines. Shes currently on a remote island keeping world-famous author Rosie DAntonio alive. Which was meant to be an easy job... Then a dead body, a bag of money, and a killer with their sights on Amy have her sending an SOS to the only person she trusts. A breakneck race around the world begins, but can Amy and Steve stay one step ahead of a lethal enemy?

I was going to spend my #HyggeHour with Trixie Belden but I really wanted to start this one. Accompanied by white chocolate with peppermint chips from Maui.

Tonight‘s mood is mellow & a little sleepy. Gearing up for another busy week & a trip to Kauai for the day tomorrow to finish up helping with benefits open enrollment. It makes for long days-but it‘s a good way to meet people & see our branches.

The humor, detail, knowledge, and character development are similar to the Thursday Murder Club series. I like the duo of Amy & her father in law. A bit like Only Murders in the Building, but with people more familiar with investigating & the seedier parts of life.

You know, I really don't much care about the plots (although they are pretty good) in his books, I'm too busy enjoying the characters who are always quirky, complex and funny in one way or another. And, a cat called Trouble.

Looking forward to book 2!

A marvelous time. If you love the Thursday Murder Club books and enjoyed Killers of a Certain Age, I think you'll love this. Rosie is a treasure, I want to hug Steve, I am not chill enough to hang out with Amy, though I hope she gets more time with her husband soon. I definitely want to see more of the quiz club crowd. Now eagerly anticipating the next entry in this series, as well. 😊 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Osman continues to demonstrate his characteristically strong grasp of people, with compassionate and funny writing that does not shy away from the darker realities: the idea of living with grief and trauma, even if you're not always talking about it; the likely consequences of criminality.
The villain(s) were a bit over the top in a lot of ways, but they're kind of a minor point aside from questions of identity,
6d
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 it isn't so much a grand face off, it's a caper, and the story is focused on the people trying to solve mysteries and stay alive, and share their lives. I can see certain crowds casting aspersions on the ChatGPT-as-tool-for-bad-guy and influencers-being-scammed story lines, but that honestly feels less 'moral of the story' and more 'this is our reality'. Reader beware. 😏 6d

I had fun reading this!
There was initially far too many characters for me to keep up with but it did all fall into place nicely. I loved the relationship between Amy and Steve but the absolute highlight of the entire book was Rosie! I just want to sit on a private jet with Rosie drinking Guinness and Tequila 🤣

Great fun! If you love the Thursday Murder Club series, you‘ll find new characters to love here with Osman‘s trademark wit and whimsy. Some parts were a touch slow for me but mostly I found myself eager to keep riding the subway so I could continue the audiobook (which is saying a lot for me, lol) ☺️

I skipped the last two months of #BOTM and I really wanted this add-on! This month‘s selections didn‘t thrill me but I chose the sweet, whimsical one. Seems like a curl up with a cup of tea on a snowy day type of book.

Just got home from my first ever book club meeting and I had a blast! I appreciate that it‘s held at a local brewery (I love having a little liquid courage in unfamiliar group settings). Being able to talk and listen with other people was so much fun! It‘s one thing to talk with another reader and be like, “I liked this book!” But another to actually have the space to be, “I liked this book because…”. I‘m making the November meeting a priority 👍

Like everyone else I‘ve read this book now

Amy works as a bodyguard and is protecting the famous author Rosie who a Russian is trying to kill. While on the job, Amy finds out that someone is trying to kill her too. Amy turns to her FIL, who is one of few people she trusts, for help. Who‘s trying to kill Amy?

I loved these characters and am already looking forward to the next book in this series

This is written in Osman‘s hilarious way

What a delight, and the perfect book for me at this time! Murder, mayhem, with a bunch of humor—I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book. Quirky characters in impossible situations, but so very detailed. I did guess part of the reveal at least headway through the book, but it did not take away from the enjoyment.

I‘m upset I‘ve yet to read Osman‘s other series…I need to bump them up my to read list!

Not yet up there with the ‘other‘ series, but I did enjoy and will definitely give number 2 a go. As with all new series there were a few chapters that were continually introducing new characters and it lost the thread a bit for me.

Another cozy murder mystery series by Osman - count me all the way in! I oftentimes suffer from character count overload in a book but never with Osman. Every character introduced to this story was fun to read and I didn‘t even have a firm grasp on all their roles by stories end. I can‘t wait for this series to continue.

This was delightful, character packed new mystery series! Like the author‘s other famous series - Thursday Murder Club - this is very much an opening book, which is introducing a big cast of characters. It can be a lot at times, so it took me a while to know who was whom. The mystery was a madcap adventure and our main characters are delightful. I look forward to the next book in the series! 4⭐️

I ended up liking this book, although I think if I were friends with someone like Rosie that she‘d make me tired. She‘s on all the time! No down time at all. Because this is a start to a new series, Osman spends a lot of time on setup, making the ending a bit rushed. I‘ll definitely read the next one. #audiowalk

I enjoyed Osman‘s newest mystery, and actually much more than I thought I would considering how much I love his first series. But the reasons I love those books popped up in this book also; his characters are fun, the dialogue is witty, and the plot is just the right balance between humourous and somber. I‘ll definitely keep reading more from Amy, Steve and hopefully Rosie!

I switched Death in Le Jardin to my nighttime book and started this one as my #audiowalk book. I immediately got into The Thursday Murder Club books; this start to a new series, not so much. It‘s taken much longer to even straighten out who the characters are and their relationships with each other. Now that I‘ve solved that problem, I may like it better.

Keeping his signature writing style - short chapters, snappy dialogue, memorable characters, and laugh out loud moments - Osman somehow wrote a new murder mystery story that really does feel distinct.

Richard Osman‘s new book apparently takes place all over the world (one of the MCs is a bodyguard to very wealthy people) so they set up a chill-out area that was an airport lounge.
