Finally read my first 2 Judy Blume books! I wish I read these when I was in grade school. I probably would have avoided much angst from dealing with bullies as well as being a late bloomer in the “Are you wearing a bra yet?” club. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Some of the conversations in Blubber were so realistic, they made me squirm. 😬All hail Judy for pushing the limits and writing books that all young girls need to read.🙌🏻

The story of Jill and her classmates still stands the test of time as it addresses bullying. I always say it but it was Blume who made me reader and through her books I learned so much.

I read this aloud to students k4-12.
In all different school setting types for - GASP - 30 plus years. The students say they love it because it‘s real life, nothing truly happens to bullies they generally move on to someone else or you get separated by having a different class or teacher. Or you just deal.

Reread for #AuthorAMonth August #JudyBlume TBH, I wanted to reread Are You There God, It‘s Me, Margaret, especially since this one is the #ChildrensClassicRead2025 pick for September, but I‘m cheap & this one was available from the library in Ebook or audio, so I went ahead with it. It‘s also my #Roll100 pick for August (#41 Any Reread.) It all came back to me while listening & I cringed & winced my way through, being mad & annoyed ⬇️

Boy, this book is sure dated. As an educator, I am glad that we have come a long way from the type of bullying that happened in the book. Well, at least in the schools around my area have made progressed. The meaness of the young characters didn't surprised me, but the behavior of the adults at the school did. It was a decent read. Not my favorite of Judy Blumes, though.

Yes I know this is currently author a month didn‘t know that when I put out schedule in October of 2024

One of my most beloved Judy Blume moments with students happen when I read this book with or aloud to students of ALL AGES. They ADORE it. In my 36 years of volunteering at the public school I have never found this book in any school library.

Wild how much has changed (and stayed the same) for elementary age kids since this was published. It made me cringe, chuckle, wince, and desperately wonder where were the adults. 🫣 #AuthorAMonth

Can you believe these Judy Blume gems were at The Dollar Tree today? I‘ll take all 4 please!

At the suggestion of @TheBookHippie, and for the sake of my mental health, I swapped this out for #withthebanned. It's also a #childrensclassicread2025.
While my experiences in school were not as extreme as in this book, this did bring me right back to my elementary days. I wish I had read this book back then. Blume understands the dynamics of grade school, as well as the herd mentality that bullying often has.

I‘m sure I would have felt differently about this book if I‘d read it as a kid instead of as an adult. I assume it‘s supposed to teach kids a lesson about why they shouldn‘t bully people, but by the end of the book none of the characters really seemed to have learned their lesson.

Kids are mean. I‘m not going to lie, I almost bailed on this one. I understand exactly what the author was trying to do, but it was incredibly hard to listen too. I was only teased once growing up (about some shoes), but I never wore those shoes again. I can recognize that this is a good book, it was just hard for me to read. #booked2021 #jewishauthor

Blume is the reason I became a reader, her books hooked me and I loved them. A few of my original Blume books from childhood. Blubber was a favorite.

“Oh what a riot, Blubbers in a diet”

I love the simple cover of the book with a little sketched out whale. Judy Blume books always have great style in my opinion.

This book does a great job of relating to real life situations that children would be able to understand. Jill just wants to focus on halloween but she has a report she‘s dreading working on.

I liked how this books teaches about bullying and how it can effect others.

This books represents the cruelty children can bring to each other while at school. It uses real life situations that can happen to anyone when bullying occurs inside or outside of a classroom. Genre:Realistic Fiction; Published: 1974

“Wendy and Caroline made copies of their How to Have Fun with Blubber list and on Monday morning they passed them out.”

This is a good book to share with students especially around the middle school ages when bullying can be very prevalent. It is important to address those topics before they have a chance to become issues.

This is a realistic story about a girl named Linda.she is made fun of in her class and called Blubber. This book addresses the problem of social dynamics and cruelty that comes with bullying.

I like the quote because it shows that sometimes you have to be brave and make the first move to achieve what you want in life! You can‘t let people push you around and walk all over you and this quote really brings that out!

I like the style of the chapter titles because it provides a glimpse into what might happen within the chapter!

Published in 1974, this realistic fiction book focuses on the topic of bullying and how it effects students in and out of the school. Unfortunately, it is honestly portrays the realities of life for some children today and it illuminates the problems and issues of growing up in today‘s world especially with the use of technology. It is a great story for children to know they aren‘t alone in their struggles and that there is hope.

This book is about children making fun of someone named Linda. They call her blubber because she is obese and so her class have her that named since she did a book report on whales.

At 80, living legend / author Judy Blume may not come to mind as #yourbestamericangirl but she has written stories that American kids think about and shaped the way tweens and teenage girls talk about puberty, periods and female sexual experiences. Recently she has granted film rights for her book, Are You There God? It‘s Me, Margaret, to be adapted into a film.

My top five are Blubber, Are You There God It‘s Me Margaret, Just as Long As We‘re Together, Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself, and Summer Sisters. I‘ve read almost everything she‘s written when I was young. Which of her books would you like to see made into a movie?

This book is such a sweet book. Whenever I read it, I felt that I needed to donate to some cause for children like the ones in the book. I feel like this book teaches grades 2 - 5 (although watch out for bad things like cussing and sexual references. I can‘t remember if this book have any like other Judy Blume books.) about anti-bullying and standing up for themselves. I highly recommend you read this book, and other books written by Judy Blume!

I never really thought about how many Judy Blume books were banned and/or controversial. I also found it interesting that Blubber was supposedly banned because the bully was never punished. As an elementary teacher currently living in a world of "no punishments" I find this really interesting. Nevertheless, she was one of my favorite authors growing up, maybe because she was so groundbreaking. #bannedbooklove #backtoreading
