so-soSo after typing this all out, I realized I have a number of thoughts....if you haven't read the Discworld, or much of Terry Pratchett, this probably won't feel relevant to a critique of this book, it's a subjective review, I realize.

so-soI listened to this one and found myself spacing out quite a bit. People can travel through a Multiverse. Every other earth had no humans in it. I would have liked a little alternative earth's where the other country in war had won instead of what had happened. World building wasn't too bad however the characters lacked for me. This may need a physical read before I say that I don't like it.
so-soLet me first say that I love Pratchett. However, this book didn't read like a typical Pratchett book. I thought the premise was good but the execution was lacking. The plot was weak. It needed more tension. Also, the ending was just blah. I felt it needed more of a punch. 3⭐️
panWhat is humanity to do when faced with an infinite number of seemingly empty Earths? It‘s time for Manifest Destiny. Again. *sigh*
Not sure what I was expecting, but plotless sci-fi colonialism wasn‘t it. This felt disjointed, lots of characters show up then disappear, & a plot doesn‘t make an appearance until 3/4 of the way through. We get flashes of Pratchett‘s wit, but I was not impressed. On top of all that, an abrupt cliffhanger. 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

pickIt took me a while to get into this one (about 75% through), but suddenly it just worked for me. I can‘t really explain it. Then it just abruptly ended with this inexplicable emerge and phone call. I cannot wait until we read the second book, now. This is much different than discworld or anything else I‘ve ever read of Pratchett‘s. Clearly that is the influence of Baxter.
Starting off my holiday weekend with this book for the OokBOokClub. I just need some sleep first.

This book, at 2 hours of audio, is such a slog. I don't find any of these characters interesting, and the thick layer of colonialism/manifest destiny is actively pushing me away. #OokBOokClub

This was my second read through of this book. My first read was on audio and I had trouble getting into. My first read through was quite a while ago, and I think I even may have DNF'd, so I bought the books secondhand thinking I may enjoy more in print.

pickA quiet and philosophical sci-fi with an intriguing premise and shot through with a gentle humour. It won‘t be to everyone‘s taste as there‘s not a great deal of action and I get the sense that this first book is all about world building and moving characters into place for the main story to start. I don't know if I simply lost my ability to listen to audiobooks once again or if I am balking because of the real world cops in this book, but I am punching out.
(Besides, I want to use my audiobook energies on catching up on reading for Pratchat, since the Ook BOok Club won't get to their recent choices soon.)

so-soI have to be honest, I was disappointed by this. It's readable, but lacks something I can't quite identify. Took me ages to finish it because it never quite gripped me. Maybe it's better for young adult readers than older adults.
... There are worlds waiting. All it takes is one small step...
pickI liked it! I believe this was recommended to me by an acquaintance. Stylistically, it reminds me of Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy & Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency) and Good Omens (which Pratchett co-wrote with Neil Gaiman).
pickReading books out of order is confusing. Having now read this, the first book in the #longearth series, so much makes sense. The main event seems to be the dirty bomb in Madison. Seems 1/5th of the population resents being left behind

My first introduction into the canon of Terry Pratchett was a good one. The Long Earth was extremely enjoyable. Easy to read, light and quick moving, just my kind of book.

I've only read the first three of this series, and the first was my favorite. It's a really interesting concept of different dimensions. And features a ship who is an #artificialintelligence. #aprilbookshowers
panVery disappointing. Interesting concept, poor execution. No character development. I'll try the next one in the hopes that the authors got too tangled in an interesting concept and forgot to write a good story.
I remember being really surprised that this book from one of my favorite British authors was #setinmycity in the middle of the US. not only that but it gets blown up by a nuclear bomb. Cool! 😎

I must really have something for parallel universes. I read Dark Matter earlier this month and now without really knowing the plot, I grabbed this one. I'm a little under a half way through but I am thoroughly enjoying this one too. After the plans for a "stepper device" are leaked onto the internet , people are able to step their way into parallel universes which are uninhabited but looks similar to what they know in the current world.
Rereading the Long Earth Series. Even I didn't like the last book very much, the first ones are really good. I would definitely be a natural stepper roaming the High Meggers.

I acknowledge that the Discworld books, especially the earlier volumes are usually more about the adventure than the people involved. While wonderful exceptions in the persons of Moist Von Lipwig, Tiffany Aching and my fave, Samuel Vimes exist, personal development always felt secondary to larger social commentary, which, don't get me wrong, worked very well. 2/? 10mo
I don't know the level of Stephen Baxter's influence on this overall vibe, I've never read from him solo and I could not detect a unique voice.
Even more distressing, there's almost no evidence of the quirky, cheeky, even hilarious warmth I so love about Pratchett's writing in the Discworld series. 3/? 10mo
As a series starter, it ends disatisfactorily, not quite on a cliffhanger, presumably to get you to read on, and because so much was covered there was no way it would all be tied up in one book. But even being desperate for those remaining works written by an author now passed, I'm not sure there's enough of his voice evident here to make me want to continue. 4/? 10mo
If you have an interest in archaeology/the evolution of early man, the potential of AI/reincarnation, whatever branch of physics multiverse is covered under, or politics/manifest destiny BS there's a number of interesting threads explored here. 5/? 10mo
Perhaps as a result of my difficulty in staying invested in the story, it struck me that the premise could make a good video game (don't trust my assessment, I never got the hang of that form of entertainment): traveling between parallel worlds, not always very different from modern earth, so not too much a strain on the design department, with an option to either explore further, encounter species, OR set up a new civilization/pioneering on a certain world. 6/? 10mo
Definite NOs: the 'for the plot' basically unexamined abandoning of one kid to go off and explore the universe, a family we barely hear from in relation to this kid after the abandoning, a kid we don't hear from until the resentment has reached catastrophic proportions;
I don't need the guy in his twenties appraising the attractiveness of the girl who 'looked in her late teens' 😑 ; Sinister 'paradise filter' on one world apparently ableist as well. 7/? 10mo
Will I eventually cave and sample the next book in the series? Probably. Although the fact that it's called The Long War is not making me more enthusiastic. 🤷🏼♂️ 8/8 10mo
