The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House
The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House | Neil Gaiman, Various
100 posts | 205 read | 2 reading | 27 to read
NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision. A being that has existed since the beginning of the universe, Morpheus rules over the realm of dreams. In THE DOLL'S HOUSE, after a decades-long imprisonment, the Sandman has returned to find that a few dreams and nightmares have escaped to reality. Looking to recapture his lost possessions, Morpheus ventures to the human plane only to learn that a woman named Rose Walker has inadvertently become a dream vortex and threatens to rip apart his world. Now as Morpheus takes on the last escaped nightmare at a serial killers convention, the Lord of Dreams must mercilessly murder Rose or risk the destruction of his entire kingdom. Collecting issues #9-16, this new edition of THE DOLL'S HOUSE features the improved production values and coloring from the Absolute Edition.

This was maybe my least favorite, but I really loved the inclusion of the “minor” characters in Rose‘s storyline. I really appreciate the willingness to tie in previous stories, to “tie up loose ends” you didn‘t even know were still unraveled. As always, Gaiman‘s sense of humor keeps me coming back. Also, this side plot of Hob Gadling. Proof Morpheus really does care sometimes, even if that fact pisses him off. 😂

Clare-Dragonfly I ❤️ Hob 2y
AshleyHoss820 @Clare-Dragonfly I do too!! I was so worried because early in his immortality, he struggled a bit. But that was so important. It *would* be horrible to see everyone you‘d ever loved age and die and you remain. He has such a wonderful, underrated story arc! ☺️ 2y

Interesting story so far. The main story was about a girl who is a vortex. Her brother is missing and her grandmother is sick. Dream watches a lot from the sidelines in this one. My favorite story was the man who wouldn't die. Artwork was okay but story was better.

Neil Gaiman spares no details as he dives into the dark side of humanity. From humans that will create nightmares to amuse themselves, to the nightmares themselves that use humans for entertainment. It's an adventure into the heart of humanity‘s darkness. I look forward to the second audiobook.

My favorite quotes: (+ quotes in the comments)
📌 For love is not part of the dreamworld. Love belongs to desire, and desire is always cruel.
📌 — There, in the flames and the darkness, they made love. All that night they stayed together, and every living thing that dreamed, dreamed that night of her face, and of her body, and of the warm salt taste of her sweat and her skin… And every living thing that could dream dreamed of love. (BEAUTIFUL)

WJCintron 📌 Desire lives in the heart.
📌 Human beings are the creatures of desire. They twist and bend as I require it. — And desire smiles, and forgets, for desire is a creature of the moment. And desire walks the endless pathways of its body, certain that he, or she, or it, is in sole and only control of its destiny.

I need to read something lighter to get out of the DARK spot I am. 😂 😂

I'm continuing with the Sandman comics, but I might have to take it slowly because I'd honestly forgotten how grim and gruesome it can be. For some reason I remember it as being dreamy and speculative, but there's a lot of elements of crime, noir and pulp fiction cleverly incorporated into the comics. This volume brings us close to some of the worst of humanity; though, at the same time, Gaiman never loses sense of how people become fucked up.

That was more confusing and less engaging than the first I think. The convention of serial killers was messed up. The roles of Desire and Delirium are not clear to me yet. Some loose connections to the first volume.

Just finished my first Sandman graphic novel (I know, I should have started with the first one but this was the only one at my library and it caught my eye) and absolutely loved it. The artwork, the story, everything. Awesome!

Also finished What Dreams May Come: liked it, not loved as I've seen from other reviews but it was OK. First half had a bit too much afterlife detail for me but glad I stuck with it though, the second half was worth.

#5⭐reads2020

Thanks for the tag @Chrissyreadit ! This has been a terrible reading year for me, but I've managed to listen to a bunch of audiobooks and get through several graphic novels. These are my 5 star reads from this year. The full cast Sandman and Northanger Abbey were fantastic, Amanda Palmer is amazing, and I learned that the best way to fight evil necromancers and a zombie horde is with an undead T-rex.

Chrissyreadit Ahhhhh! I must get The Sandman and Northanger Abbey on audio that sounds more than amazing!!! 4y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve just heard there is an Icelandic version of Stoker‘s original text, serialised in newspapers in 1900-1901, and endorsed by Stoker himself. It‘s described as surpassing the original, which tends towards the ponderous and reflective. Check it out if interested. 4y

Now this is more what I had in mind when I picked up this series. I couldn't put this one down. I just had to know what happened next.

The brilliance of making people whom fell prey to the Sleepy Sickness part of the main story. That's the kind of thing Gaiman does that blows my mind.

I'm growing really fond of Morpheus as well - and bonding with characters always makes me love stories more.

I was right to have high expectations!

🎧 I thoroughly loved this production!

Adult language & situations! The cast was amazing with Gaiman playing the narrator. It‘s probably different from what you‘re used to listening to. It‘s like a full cast radio play. So yes, each act starts with a short scene then music & the name of the episode. Lots of appropriate sound effects.

An acquired taste? Bizarre. Plot interspersed with DC characters. So many awesome voice actors!

I normally don't read graphic novels, but can't not read everything by Neil Gaiman. I read the first volume over 10 years ago and wasn't so blown away by it that I was dying to read the next, but Neil's writing and the spell it weaves on the imagination have grown. Reading this was a different experience. The smaller stories interspersed with the main plot make for very entertaining read.

The artwork is gorgeous. The problem with the glossy pages is that it is all too easy to turn over several pages at once, which had me very confused for a while in several places.

There was a doll's house, but I have no idea why this volume was called that apart from a nod to the title of Ibsen's play, which I haven't read or seen so I'm no further forward.

Much better than Vol 1. The same mesmerizing artwork, but this time the story arc is more cohesive and stoked my curiosity as it went. I also thought the stories within each issue were stronger: I'm not a big fan of serial killer horror stories, but the 'Cereal Convention' was a creative take on this genre. I enjoyed the trip through time in 'Men of Good Fortune', even if it had little to do with the main story. And The Corinthian... 😨
