Ruthiella The chapter really does underscore the absurdity of class hierarchies! 😂 Certainly Mrs. Jamison enjoys being a big fish in a very small pond. And of course they ate up all the food not because they were hungry but because they were “too genteel” to point out how low class the spread was by abstaining. (edited) 12mo

Clare-Dragonfly I feel like the narrator is telling us all this in a sly whisper out of the corner of her mouth. And she occasionally bursts into giggles because she just can‘t help herself. That‘s why there are so many funerals—so she isn‘t constantly laughing. 12mo

In trying to find some kind of a guide for this book, I stumbled upon a passage that stated that a lot of this story is autobiographical--including the killing-of-the-birds scene. Does this mean that Anne = Agnes? I think it's too complicated for an answer yet. Thoughts? 🤔 12mo

CoffeeNBooks I'm curious as to why Chettam thought it would have been ok for Dorothea to decide to marry him, but that she's too young to make the decision to marry Casaubon. ? I love Mr. Cadwallader's description of Mr. Brooke as "pulpy, he will run into any mould but he won't keep shape." ? 1y

TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - I believe he means a literal stream with trout for fishing. I believe they only like specific conditions, so not every stream would be ideal for them. Mr. Gardiner in P&P also was excited about Darcy's good trout streams, so apparently it was a not-unpopular hobby haha 1y
