Old Friends and New Fancies
Old Friends and New Fancies: An Imaginary Sequel to the Novels of Jane Austen | Sybil Brinton
62 posts | 20 read | 16 to read
The first Jane Austen sequel ever written! Originally published in 1914, this charming and original sequel to the novels of Jane Austen intertwines the lives of the most beloved characters from all six Austen novels with new characters of the author's devising. Inventive matchmaking leads numerous pairs of lovers through the inevitable (and entertaining) difficulties they must encounter before they are united in the end. Old Friends and New Fancies is a gratifying read for any Jane Austen enthusiast. "This is the ultimate Jane Austen sequel....Virtually all the characters left standing at the end of the novels-most particularly the unmarried ones-must all meet up... Broken engagements will follow, a few false trails and threatened unacceptable matches must be endured before the Forces of Good prevail." -Charles Wenz, Life Member of the Jane Austen Society

I'm behind on reviews again, but felt the same as most #pemberlittens with this one. It was decent but there were sooo many characters to keep track of and while I liked revisiting some of my favorites, I don't know that the couples paired were the best matched. Glad to have read this though, especially with the #hashtagbrigade

peanutnine #2023ReadySetRead title starts with 'O' @Clwojick 1y
BarkingMadRead Definitely the general consensus!! I think she could have cut the characters in half and been just as successful 1y

A fun romp with the #pemberlittens and the #hashtagbrigade, led by the ever-hilarious and insightful @BarkingMadRead. Considered the first “fan“ Austen novel as well as pastiche, I enjoyed the attempt by Brinton to include most every main/minor character from all of Austen's novels. However, there were a ton of characters to keep track of, and some were only mentioned briefly. I also found Kitty to be a brat. Still, I loved reading with the group!

Soft pick. I enjoyed this one - and I especially enjoyed reading it, as always, with the #HashtagBrigade - but I think this book would have benefited from either narrowing its focus or being spread out over multiple books. We have every single character Austen ever thought about creating all milling about, and three different love stories, so it's a lot to jam in. In the end, I wanted to like it more than I did, mainly because I'm not actually ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) convinced that any of the three couples are still going to happy in ten years! 😂 Still, a fun little romp, and kudos to Brinton for managing to work so many of Austen's characters into one story!

Thanks for hosting @BarkingMadRead - reading as a group increases my enjoyment of these books by about 1000%!!!

BarkingMadRead This seems to be the general consensus 🤣🤣 1y
eeclayton I'm especially doubtful about Mary+Fitz. Her passive aggressive way of problem solving may not be conducive to married bliss in the long run. 1y
See All 6 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - For sure. I wish we could have seen a scene of them actually having a conversation about their misunderstandings and working through them. And I just... Kitty as the helpmeet in a parish??? Georgianna, who is sweet and kind but rich and spoiled, as the wife of a seagoing fellow who is gone for months at a time??? None of these really matched up for me 😂 1y
eeclayton While I agree about Kitty, her engagement actually makes sense to me. She was disappointed and then welcomed the first person who was interested in her. That doesn't mean I see happy spouses in the future 😂 It's a great point that all of these conversations take place off-screen. Even with Georgiana+William, we see them meeting, but aren't given what is said. 1y
willaful I actually think it could work for Georgina, because she's used to being the family pet and she'll just keep being that while William's at sea. Kitty I don't see at all. She'll be bored and useless. 1y

Read with the #hashtagbrigade for the #PemberLittens I am happy to have finally read this one. I am giving it a soft pick for sentimental & 💕of Jane Austen reasons + it was early fan fiction. Reading it in a chapter-a-day format with funny hashtags from @BarkingMadRead was the way to go here as the many characters & the extra angst might have annoyed me in bigger doses.

BarkingMadRead I totally agree!! 1y

A bit over the top with misunderstandings, broken engagements, and then there is Kitty Bennet. The most annoying character of the book. I found myself agreeing with Mrs Bennet and yelling "Oh! hang Kitty! what has she to do with it?"

Not my favorite Austenesque but fun Chapter a Day Readalong. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for hosting and all the fun memes!

Mehso-so

#pemberlittens #hashtagbrigade
A sequel to all six published Austen novels, Old Friends and New Fancies manages to star, revisit or at least mention most of the characters we know and love from the Austen books. The first chapters were quite confusing for me, it wasn't easy to follow who was who and how people knew one another. The connections were quite clever, but that's all I can say on the positive side. ⬇️

eeclayton Sadly, most characters lost their charm, they all acted and sounded similarly throughout the book. The plot revolved around three budding romances, which weren't too compelling without the layers of Austen's character studies and social commentary.
All in all, it was an interesting read, but nothing that you shouldn't miss.
Thanks @BarkingMadRead for hosting ❤️

What a delightful read! Brinton‘s book that entangles Austen‘s characters in a variety of circumstances is playful and endearing. While not quite Austen‘s prose, the narration does well in imitation. willaful LOL, best meme ever!

Mary is indeed annoying, but I feel like this is one place in the book that really makes sense to me given the original characters. (Though I still think #MaryWasRetconned.) I can see what happened with Edmund affecting her like this.
1y
mcctrish Mary is totally getting on my wick @Cuilin am I wrong in remembering it took quite a few requests from Fitz to finally get a foot in the door at the Crawfords and then all everyone can talk about is Mary is engaged ?! It‘s not JA, but it‘s pretty close. I loved the bringing together of characters from various stories and seeing their interactions. Some of the characters seemed spot-on (cough, Emma) while others didn‘t work for me quite as well (Mary Crawford took some getting used to). Most of our beloved friends are the older generation now and focus shifts to younger siblings Georgiana, Kitty, William Price, and James Morland. Nicely handled overall.

dabbe It seems Brinton has cast the Knightleys in a negative light. Georgianna was appalled to have to sit next to George. And Emma was quite rude to Georgianna as well. mcctrish Georgianna has become quite the little sleuth #puttingallthepiecestogether maybe she and Mr Price can go on a ‘date‘ to talk about ‘kitty‘ and confront Miss Crawford about her engagement to the old man 1y
ravenlee I have always disliked Emma (my second-least favorite JA heroine after Fanny, and it seems like Brinton is on the same page), and here she seems to be right back to the beginning of her book. 1y
rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee I don‘t think Mr. Knightley was able to stop Emma from matchmaking. 😄 1y

willaful As we thought! I think it's being set up for Kitty to not be the right one for him, but on the other hand, I can't see her being the right one for James either and she has to marry somebody! #womenssphere #jk 1y
Cuilin Georgiana seems a bit smitten with Price. Who will Moreland prefer? Hmm 1y
See All 10 Comments
mcctrish Is it just me or was Kitty over the top? She loooovvveeess Price, but first thing she‘s doing is forbidding him from setting sail?! Sounds like she will have a marriage like her parents, all snips and barbs. If I was WP I‘d rather someone who was interested in my travels and happy enough to amuse one self #makesgoodchoiceswilliamprice #iskittythenewlydia 1y
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish I was thinking the same. If he was trying to decide which to choose, I think he would go for the girl who supports him! 1y
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish she does seem like the new Lydia! 1y
willaful @mctrish I think it makes sense that Kitty is still Kitty-ish. She was always heavily influenced by Lydia and a complete turnaround seems more unlikely.
1y
dabbe @willaful Why can't Kitty live at Pemberley and be mentored by Elizabeth and/or Georgianna? Seems like a big enough place. Or am I way out of line with that idea? Glad she didn't go traipsing after Lydia this time. 1y
willaful @dabbe I sort of thought she had. Maybe her mom wanted to keep her home. 1y
willaful @dabbe Yes, she did. “Kitty, to her very material advantage, spent the chief of her time with her two elder sisters. In society so superior to what she had generally known, her improvement was great. She was not of so ungovernable a temper as Lydia; and, removed from the influence of Lydia‘s example, she became, by proper attention and management, less irritable, less ignorant, and less insipid.“ 1y

BarkingMadRead @Cuilin right? I‘ll have to check my character list and see if she‘s on it 1y
willaful Surely there must be a nice, #noflannel wearing man for Marianne in this?

I'm also expecting William to prefer G, though I had previously thought she and James would be the match. Kitty and James certainly doesn't seem very likely. Who else is at a loose end, matrimony-wise?

Bookwormjillk Just finished this one. It‘s starting to make sense a little now 🤪 1y
willaful I'm enjoying the read, but I think it's definitely lacking the deeper shades of characterization Austen brings to her books. The bad guys and good guys are all so obvious and they've all recognized each other and made friends. 1y
mcctrish Lady Catherine is quite the pushover #hellhathnofury and all that for Miss Steele, I wish one of the gentlemen ( Darcy or the Colonel) would just yell at their aunt “for god‘s sake woman, you have stirred up a hive of trouble over idle gossip put in your ear by conniving hussies” and call it a day (edited) 1y

Chapter 5: my head is spinning and I had to #consultthegoogle #somuchdrama after a ton of drama, Lizzie gets Mary invited to Catherine‘s reception #enterMrYates #sosalty #sinsofthebrother #poorColonel #fingerscrossed #flashbacktoLizziesGarden #pemberlittens #hashtagbrigade #almostcaughtup

Bookwormjillk I feel like I‘m going to have to re-read all the books now 1y
willaful I'm curious about Mrs. Grant's saying “If you only knew the real truth of the matter--if you only knew who had suffered and who was to be blamed!“ What do you suppose she's referring to? I don't think Mary should be blamed for her brother's actions but I also don't think that was the reason Edmund broke with her. I don't mind seeing Mary redeemed but I don't like her being whitewashed. 1y
See All 9 Comments
peanutnine @willaful I think that is just bias from Mrs Grant on her sister's behalf, seeing her heartache. I hope that Mary recognizes how she acted poorly and learned from it 1y
TheAromaofBooks I finally had to sit down and write out little mini family trees to help me remember who is who! Part of the problem is Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey are the two Austens I have read the fewest times and a LOT of the characters are from those two books!! 1y
ravenlee I was doing all right keeping everybody straight until Mr. Yates showed up. I knew, from the guide at the beginning, he was from MP, but I couldn‘t place him. When he became important, though, I got frustrated and had to look up “who the hell is Mr. Yates?!” 1y
TheBookHippie @TheAromaofBooks brilliant. I‘m going to do the same so I don‘t wear the Google out 😅😂 1y

AnnR It seems the Colonel has met someone who might make him happy. With the meddlesome Steeles and snooty Lady Catherine involved, what could possibly go wrong? Bookwormjillk This book is confusing me. I need a chart of characters. 1y
Librarybelle It‘s testing my knowledge of the main and secondary characters too, @Bookwormjillk ! My edition has a character list at the beginning, which was a good refresher for me. So far, I find it interesting how the author has intertwined the different Austen books - very plausible. 1y
See All 11 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk @Librarybelle my edition has a list of characters at the beginning as well, but google has also been my friend. I‘m super aware of all the P&P and S&S characters, as well as Emma, but the rest aren‘t as familiar! 1y
Deblovestoread Thankful for the list of characters. It has really stretched my memory of whose who and the role they played in their book. 1y
peanutnine So many characters!! I just finished reading Mansfield Park so that's been helpful. What's throwing me off the most is remembering everyone's new married names 1y
mcctrish I am feeling so rusty ☹️ and all this talk of vicars and curates has me thinking of Grantchester ( I just binged the early seasons ) so I feel like there should be a murder right about now 🤣🤣🤣 1y

willaful I think it's interesting how the author assumes readers all already know the backstory of each of the characters.

Also, yet another who wants to rehabilitate Mary Crawford! I remember reading a “sequel“ -- Joan Aiken, maybe -- which was clearly of the mind that Mary got #arawdeal and should've been the real heroine. Never mind the whole #beingafortunehunter thing.
1y
See All 19 Comments
Ruthiella @willaful I loved Mary Crawford and was annoyed by Fanny, but I need to re-read 1y
willaful @Ruthiella Fanny is definitely all wet, but Mary pretty much #dugherowngrave IIRC. I don't mind her growing from the experience and having a HEA though! (edited) 1y
Cuilin So many characters. There was a moment where a Nancy showed up and I was like where did you come from? 1y
ravenlee @Cuilin that threw me for a minute too, and I had to rack my brain to remember Nancy is a nickname for Anne (which I should remember, as an Anne) 1y
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin @ravenlee yeah, it took me a minute to see that Nancy is Anne #annenotnancy #dontconfuseme #toomanypeople 1y
TheAromaofBooks Sooo many characters all at once and @willaful is right about just being expected to remember them!!! I was never a Mary fan and read another sequel where she died, so I was also a little like, “wait, she's not dead??“ 😂 But poor Brandon! I love that guy, and everyone always wants to kill him off! #Brandon4lyfe 1y
ravenlee Exactly! @TheAromaofBooks Why is Col Brandon always the first to get knocked off? He‘s one of the best Austen characters. And I feel more sympathetic to him as I find myself on the wrong side of 35 (okay, 40) - he‘s supposed to be sooo old and he‘s not even middle aged?! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - Right?? Everyone so down on him because he wears flannel! 😂 1y
dabbe @ravenlee I can't ever picture Col. Brandon again without thinking or seeing Alan Rickman, who is also gone. 💔

1y
dabbe @willaful Agreed! It's been a while since I've read some of Austen's books, and boy am I having to go back and research to remember the gist of each person from the Austen novels. 😅 #whew 1y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe same! I mostly have the gist but I definitely needed a bit of a refresher 1y
willaful Brandon got knocked off?! I missed that.

Now I want to read an AU where Marianne dies and Brandon and Mary Crawford get married. #justkidding #donthateme
1y
BarkingMadRead @willaful I hate that Brandon died! Whyyyy does everyone kill him off?!? 1y
willaful Oh, I did remember wrong. It wasn't fortunate hunting, it was Mary's moral failings in Edmund's eyes. 1y
