The Douglas Bastard | J R Tomlin

Finished my fourth book for #AwesomeApril.

This is the first book in the Archibald the Grim Series by J R Tomlin. Quite a short but very readable book covering the early part of the life of The Black Douglas‘s illegitimate son. The Black Douglas (Sir James Douglas) was a staunch ally of Robert the Bruce. It‘s set between 1338 and 1346 as the young King David and his allies attempt to get back control of Scotland from the English.

Andrew65 I look forward to continuing this series, as it is a period of British history I do not know enough about.

Finished yesterday for #SeasonalCozies I am afraid this just wasn‘t a good book. It‘s a risk I take when I go for first in series, cheap or free (this was a Kindle Unlimited title) but it‘s disappointing nonetheless. I went between wanting to shake & throat punch the MC who was kind of an idiot. Then there was the dialogue which was not even close to natural. I highlighted a part where the⬇️

DebinHawaii … the male love interest needlessly mansplained dry ice to the MC but then I returned the book without writing it down. Just bad. I won‘t be reading the next one. There‘s better gardening cozies out there!

Read along with @TheAromaofBooks & some friends for a book a month Trixie Belden readalong (we need a hashtag!) It‘s been a few years since I reread the series & this first book which sets it up with Trixie meeting poor-little-rich teen Honey Wheeler & them discovering runaway Jim Frayne hiding in the old mansion. I forgot Brian & Mart (Trixie‘s brothers) are away working at a boys camp for ⬇️

DebinHawaii … the summer so we don‘t get to meet them yet. The first book mainly sets the stage for coming books, although shades of Nancy Drew (& my #NancyNogginKnockout counter or #NNK ) both Trixie & Jim got hit on the head from a dive & a ladder fall respectively!! 🫣🤕 Gleeos! Looking forward to book 2 next month! (edited) 12h

It's been awhile since I read a book in this series, but I remembered the other three I read. Usually when you get into the fourth book in a series, it's usually a dud. I did think this one was, though I don't think it was as good as the first or second one.

I do wonder how much can really happen to a family? Then I think, to myself, it's fiction. I kind of liked the hillbilly drug clan that Caine had in this book. ⬇️

Another hard/dark story. Hard to read because story has various triggers which were so descriptive.. I‘m not a fan of magical realism but author used it amazingly. Two characters connected in two time lines? Maybe...story use the concept of quantum multiverse. The ending was expected to me as I have seen in novels read using this concept. Beautiful and thoughtful lines even in those dark parts. Brilliant. Amazing narration by author. 4/4.5⭐️

Gissy First novel by this author. I bought 3 more books by her but this one was read for #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

Many topics discussed in this novel (culture, social actions, identity, etc) even the role of the reader in that wonderful quote by Marcel Proust. 4/4.5⭐️

I had my own little Readathon today..

HF: Newark, NJ, 1930s Tommy and Benjy have grown up inseparable! Never mattered that Benjy is Jewish and Tommy is of German descent. But since Hitler took power, Tommy‘s joined a Nazi youth camp. So Benjy creates a group called Newark Minutemen , an anti-Nazi vigilante group. This will not bode well…
Based on factual events~

Ozeki searches for answers to the zen koan, “What did your face look like before your ancestors were born?“ She does this by watching her face in a mirror for 3 hours. The things she notices bring back memories of her early childhood and parents. 4 stars.
