To Have and Have Not
To Have and Have Not | Ernest Hemingway
To Have and Have Not is the dramatic, brutal story of Harry Morgan, an honest boat owner who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat. His adventures lead him into the world of the wealthy and dissipated yachtsmen who swarm the region, and involve him in a strange and unlikely love affair. In this harshly realistic, yet oddly tender and wise novel, Hemingway perceptively delineates the personal struggles of both the "haves" and the "have nots" and creates one of the most subtle and moving portraits of a love affair in his oeuvre. In turn funny and tragic, lively and poetic, remarkable in its emotional impact, To Have and Have Not takes literary high adventure to a new level. As the Times Literary Supplement observed, "Hemingway's gift for dialogue, for effective understatement, and for communicating such emotions the tough allow themselves, has never been more conspicuous."

This is the first book I have ever DNF‘d. I understand it was written in a very different time but at page 142/262, I decided I just really don‘t like it. The language is stronger than I anticipated, again understanding this was written in the 30‘s, but almost every other sentence includes some sort of derogatory reference to a person of another race.

I much prefer Hemingway for his love of polydactyl cats. Picture of Hemingway cat included.

Tonight I picked up cheeseburger pizza on the way home and then finished this book. Hemingway is hit or miss for me, and this was not a favorite. The book revolves around Harry Morgan but sections are written in slightly different ways. It was more violent and depressing than I expected with tangents that somewhat baffled me. Additionally, the racist language and attitudes were strong in many places.

Daisey I may add another choice later, but the beginning of this book is set in Cuba and the main character frequently talks of traveling between Cuba & Florida. #ReadingTheAmericas2023 #Cuba 2y
BarbaraBB I didn‘t enjoy this one much either. Also set in Cuba but much better is 2y

I listened to several hours of The Feast of the Goat over the weekend and got to some tough chapters describing the torture of men arrested after Trujillo‘s assassination. So, I took a break today and read some more of my Hemingway book. This book also quickly turned more violent than I was expecting from the description, but I was happy to realize it‘s partially set in Cuba.

Am I missing something here, but why is Hemingway heralded as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century? I borrowed this book based upon an interview with Johnny Depp, whom I now question, not only because of his court case, but because this book is just awful. Hemingway‘s use of the “N” word in particular was not only unnecessary but showed an absolute disregard for certain people. As for the writing? Again why is he heralded?

RickW I literally had to stop reading this book after the first chapter. I couldn‘t take it anymore. His contemporaries are so much better. 2y

Not Hemingway‘s best novel but worth reading. It comes across to me as a bit of a Hemingway and Raymond Chandler mash-up stylistically. While most of the story still doesn‘t work for me there are passages in it that remind you what a brilliant writer Hemingway was. It also helps that it is a quick read at under two-hundred pages. Two paws up.

Spent the morning touring The Hemingway House in Key West. This is a picture of his writing studio...it‘s easy to see how he was so inspired here. I tagged the new addition to my library. 😉📚

Wrapped up a successful trip to Key West for the Hemingway Days festival. It was hot and wonderful and I wish I never had to leave.

Samplergal I‘m sorry we left the Keys before the festival. It might be the only way I‘d get my introverted butt back to key west. Lol. Glad you had a fun time. Love his home and the kitties. 5y

This is the only one of Hemingway‘s novels that‘s set in Key West. Couldn‘t resist picking this one up at the Hemingway House Museum shop (all their books have this sticker on the covers). I like Hemingway‘s writing, so that was a pick. But didn‘t enjoy the racial labels (n-word, etc).

Wish I could say the shirt is from Key West. It‘s actually from Target 😂. We found out afterwards that son needs a Hawaii/Keys shirt for one night of his trip 😂

ValerieAndBooks This also happens to be a #1001Books. 6y

Lynnsoprano Was Key West crowded? When we were there in December, although almost everything had been cleaned/fixed up after the hurricane, tourists hadn‘t come back yet. It was nice to be able to walk into restaurants 😄 6y
ValerieAndBooks @CouronneDhiver it definitely was a highlight of our stay in Key West 😊 6y
ValerieAndBooks @QuintusMarcus I‘ll have to watch! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano There were plenty of people around, but we never had a problem being able to get a table right away anywhere. Didn‘t feel overwhelmed with people. Is that ever normal? One day we drove up and down the highway through the keys and we saw a bit of hurricane damage still left throughout. It was so hot the whole time 😅! I was going to ask you how far you were from Key West but then I saw you‘d be in Maine during that time 😊. 6y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks We‘re a 4.5 -5 hour drive to Key West. The keys are a long, slow drive. Lunch at the Green Turtle Inn in Islamorada would have been fun, though. One of these days...😄 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano we rented a car one day and drove from Key West to Key Largo and back. No stop-and-go traffic either way (it was a Tuesday) but the speed limit as you probably know was just 45 mph most of the way. I think I remember passing the Green Turtle Inn! But we stopped at a place in Marathon for lunch, because our airport shuttle driver had recommended it. I forgot its name but it was good 😊! 6y

I love Hem and his ability to tell a whole story through some disjointed events but this one had me cruising through the last 75 pages. The suddenness of a pair of unhappy married couples and their petty banter had me laughing despite the little sense it made to include them in Harry‘s story.

#day15 #90sinjuly #motorcycledriveby The only time I ever ride a motorcycle (or to be more accurate - a moped! 😂) is when we go to Key West. Whilst there, I love to visit Hemingway House. The tour is so fun, full of gossipy stories about his time in Key West, and surrounded by the legendary six-toed cats.... My favorite story is the swimming pool feud with his wife, which ended in the urinal from a local bar as a giant cat bowl/water feature! 😂

Robothugs Well this is totally interesting! I had no idea. I want to go to Key West to visit said house! 7y

453 - To Have and Have Not

Short stories about live in and trade between Cuba and Florida. Harry Morgan is a shipper who will take on all kinds of deals sailing between the two coasts. In between there are a lot of alcohol and fights. I didn't especially like the book. At least it was short.
